PETES WORKBENCH. Scratch building a LSWR 0395 class, long term project

Having searched through my transfers the other, it reminded me that I had a new sheet of LMS wagon so thought I would do my Haywood MR refrigerated van. This was started in 2010 so really is a shelf queen.

I now just need to paint the roof white and then it can have a coat of varnish and then be assembled ready for joining the fleet or may even trade it in for something different. We will see.

Hello Peter

Some quite outstanding work and great results!! The scratch built wagons are a masterpiece and I look forward to seeing the 0395 completed.

Keep up the good work.

Ps, I can't begin to imagine the frustration of waiting for parts, etc!!!!

A very nicely modelled van Peter.  It pays not to rush a build ;)

Thanks Ken

It was started with 6 other Haywood kits for a customer. There was a MR refrigerator in that lot, and of coarse HMRS only have one set of logos on their sheet. Then the move here etc. I do really like to finish a model in reasonable time once started.

I should get on with the 0395 I have all the parts and there is very little scratch building left to do. The G6 for this years competition has sort of taken over the time on my own models.

Finally got the refrigerated van done. I am pleased with the way it turned out. I just need to change the couplings when I get the correct ones, as I assume it would have screw type as it is piped. Now I need to add a butchers to the layout to justified it coming down the line. A bit of weathering won't go a miss it looks a little bright. But that can wait.

Now what else can I get onto my bench?

Would that not be, being greedy me with two when so many are with out any?

But then, if you were feeling over-provisioned with BWTs, you could donate one to a worthy cause. I could definitely help you identify such a worthy cause ;-p

I went back to doing a little more on the 0395. It took a while to fathom out where I had got to. I also found out I was not as far along as I had thought I was. There is quite a bit of detailing to do before the castings can be added.

So to make a start on some that I had been sort of dreading last time I was working on this.

The reversing reach rod was first to be cut, in the picture it is only resting in it's slot in the cab, and it still needs a hole in the end. Above the reversing rod is the linkage to the sand boxes it is an odd set up there is just one lever by the reverser in the cab that controls both front boxes, the rod goes down the drivers side with a link dropping down to a pivot on the front splasher, then a linking rod to the other side.

On the other side the front sand linkage comes up from the cross link fixed to the splashers.

Coming out from the cab on the fireman's side is the control linkage for the cylinder drain cocks it attaches to a long centrally pivoted lever that runs from the end of the cab rod vertically down to beneath the frames. The lower half can be seen in some of the photos of the frames.

Hi Peter, just catching up with your excellent work. I really like the refrigerator van, it would nice to have something similar on my layout. I think I'll check if there was a 1900s MR version.

For some years I have had a set of wheels and etchings for a LSWR A12 Sunrise kit. I never had the castings, but a chat a guildex and a phone call brought me a set castings from Slater's.

They forgot to supply the instructions though, not sure whether I pester for a set or just carry on with out them.

This will now be ready for the build list. Before any one says they never went to Bodmin, well in my reality they did. They have always been high on my like list.

Having arrived home it was time to sort me bits and bobs out. Just before leaving the UK I won these on a well knownauction site. They include a set of Stanier tender wheels which will go nicely with the Jubilee that I bought. There are also 3 pairs of drivers for a 2-3F these may or may not be kept. 7 packs of coach, 4 pairs of three hole wagon wheels, and a few detail packs wich may be passed on in the future. This little lot cost less than the driving, and tender wheels, so the other wheels etc are a bonus and will keep me outta trouble for a year or two as far as rolling stock wheels are concerned.

I also found these amongst the bits I had bought earlier in the year and forgotten about.

The new storage box along with the old one. A great improvement to the stock situation.

A whole selection of loco and rolling stock bits I have been getting of Ebay over the last year. All needs sorting out and putting in the stock pots.

You may or mmay not remember sometime back I rebuilt an ABS GW conflat, well the transfers are finally here, So yet another job to do. I will then have to sort out it's container.

Something that for a modeller of British outline steam engines here in Brazil is more valuable than gold. Some good old coal. Yes I know it comes from prehistoric rain forests but here in the rain forest, it is non existant.

And finally well for this post my new toys. A Kern compass and pen set, plus a solitary pen. Both bought very reasonably. I am hoping these will help my lining out. I have yet to try them out but they do look nice compared with the old cheapy I have been using.

I needed some new bits for my irons. But I thought the price was OTT for a lump of iron that will rust and fall apart. So I bought some copper rod whilst in the UK I got enough to make at least six new bits for each iron for less than the cost of two new bits. I managed to fit these and tin them today. Nice thing about pure copper is they can be redressed and retinned as the start to corrode,   Just wish they would use the right material for the job.

No work done as such but I need more wagons especially coal wagons for Bodmin. I decided I would start seeing if I could win some on that well known auction site.

Well I got my first one. I could not make out if it was all there as it had been started. Well it wasn't it is missing the brake levers and springs, both are not a problem. But it did come with 2 sets of sprung buffers and 2 sets of 3 link couplings. All for the grand sum of £13.50 including postage to Brazil.

A winner I think.

I am after a good selection of PO wagons. I would like to try and get 2 trains worth of them for the gasworks. From the pictures I have seen they also used a lot of 5 plamk ex LSWR wagons. I just need to find out where the demestic and loco coal went.  Any ideas on where the water cranes where?

I've not seen any sign of a water crane at Bodmin North, the nearest water supplies I know of were at Wadebridge, Bodmin GWR and Pencarrow Wood.

On the maps which include the turntable there is a rectangle near it which I assume is a coaling stage. But I have seen no photos of that area. I can't see a terminus with table etc not having water. There must of been a lot of shunting just supplying the gas works.
