RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted April 29, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 29, 2016 I've not seen any sign of a water crane at Bodmin North, the nearest water supplies I know of were at Wadebridge, Bodmin GWR and Pencarrow Wood. Wadebridge seems a long way to go for water, Pencarrow wood is up the Wenford Bridge line (this is the one fed from a stream) so not much use for Bodmin North trains. Agreed, just stating where the known local sources were. Gut feeling says there should have been a water supply at Bodmin North but there's no sign of it in the 100s of photos I've collected. It's certainly not at the station end - the only possibility is that it was hidden from view in the sidings at the bridge end.
N15class
Anything on the Britain from the Air photos? There is no photos of the table. Best one is after it was filled in with the siding towards the signal box still in place. Not seen anything but will look again.
N15class
Way off topic. Last Sunday we took a stroll along the river front. they old rubber warehouses are now restaurants etc. The cranes are still there along with this old engine, it was built by Rustons and Proctor in Lincoln so a long way from home too. In need of TLC and a new certificate as there firebox is stamped 1907. Well here's me and my boy posing by the old beauty.
N15class
I thought while I was waiting for parts and to paint the Dukedog and S15. I would do a small batch of white metal wagon kits, that is if building 3 different wagons from 2 manufacturers batch building. First up is an old ABS 5 plank ex LSWR wagon with round ends. I think I have 2 of these so 1 will have flat ends when I get around to it. This will be in SR brown. Then a more modern ABS GWR 02 open which will be in good old GW grey. Last but not least is a Majestic models 4 plank single brake shoe wagon from the LBSCR. This one was at the end of its life. Some were in the ED stock so not sure if I paint as LBSC at end of life or SR brown or even in ED bauxite.
N15class
Had a little time at the bench today, managed to get a bit done on the wagons. I am building these more or less straight out of the box. I will note anything that is different. I started with fitting buffers and couplings where appropriate, depending on what is in the kit. After cleaning up all the parts I made a start with assembly. The ends are as follows first is LSWR 5 plank. I have used the couplings from the kit some may not like them but for me with trains of less than 10 wagons they are fine. next is the LBSC 4 plank this has the cast buffer bodies from the kit but they have been adapted to use internal sprung heads as the originals were whitemetal and very poor. Here also a different coupling will be used. The GWR 02 8 plank is as per the kit. Finally the ends from a LMS single plank. Yes I know I said I was building 3, but I found this in my cupboard and thought it would be good to rebuild it at this time. it is also a Mercian kit. I bought it for a few pounds some time ago. It had been built using evostick. This has cast brass buffers and a Slaters coupling so a bit different from what was in the original kit. Next I made the ends and sides into L´s, and then into complete wagons. Here are the L´s. The photos of them as bodies will come later as I got called away by a hungry boy. More in the next day or so I hope. It is enjoyable change to locos.
RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted October 11, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 11, 2016 (edited) Nice to see some wagons on your workbench, Pete, and some interesting prototypes. I'm on the lookout for 7mm LBSCR wagon kits, so the Majestic Models one is of particular interest to me. Do you happen to know what range that kit is in now? I believe the Majestic range went to MSC Models, but the latter only seem to do motors and gearboxes now. I like the Rustons and Proctor engine. It must have seen some things in its time! Thanks Mikkel. Yes I reckon the old engine has seen some things. I know Roxey Mouldings have some LBSCR wagons. I got my Majestic kits off of that well known auction site. Hi Mikkel, Quite a few of the Majestic wagons are now with Dragon Models in Chris's Celtic connection range and at least a couple are with Gladiator.
RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted October 12, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 12, 2016 Thanks for the info, gents. Good to know that the Majestic kits are still on the market, I will have a look.
N15class
Not sure if anyone remembers way back when I aquired a GWR H4? container wagon. This was rebuilt after purchase from a well know auction site It was painted but never finished, I got some transfers from Parkside. These Now have been fitted and varnished over. I still need to fix the buffers and couplings, once I can remember where I put them safe. I also think there needs to be a cover on the floor where the chain lockers are. Is this correct?
N15class
I now have basic bodies made. No problems here, although I have loosely placed the floor in the LMS one plank. I was hoping to just scribe it but it sits down with a whitemetal flange either side.So I need to make a very thin overlay or it will be too shallow inside. Next up will be to get the under frames done.
N15class
I have been slowly getting on with the wagons. I had not realised I had missed out some of the work. But we are now all primed ready for some colour. LSWR 5 plank, will be finished in SR brown with large letters. The LBSC 4 plank will be finished in dark grey with large letters and I am hoping I can make it look old. The 8 plank GWR will be in large letter grey livery. last but not least the LMS one plank will be in grey. May be next time it will be a bit more colourful.
RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted November 17, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 17, 2016 Very nice Pete. Nothing like wagons to get the modelling juices flowing again. If it was up to me, all UK wagons would have been round-ended. It adds something extra to the overall look.

jazz
Merry Christmas Peter. Keep up the excellent work in 2017. Regards, Ken
N15class
Done some more to the wagons. The basic painting has been do. Except I should do better research. LMS painted the single plank bauxite straight out of the factory. So mine needs to go back to the paint shop to change colour. The others now have their identities, so a little more painting mainly on the insides. Then a bit of light weathering. Except the LBSCR one which will be a bit of an experiment on ageing.
N15class
Having found out the LMS wagons is as late as 1938/9 I think it will return to the UK with me and be moved on. It was bought as they say sight unseen, nice model but a bit late for me.
N15class
I now have the LMS single plank in the right livery. Still needs a little detail work to be done and the buffers adding. Yes it will be sold later, either when over at Christmas or before if I can get it in a parcel before that. And now the first stage of weathering the LBSCR open to get it to look something well worn. I did manage to break off the brake ratchet, so I have photographed the other side.
N15class
Well I think I broken the back of this little thing. I know it needs buffers fitting, and I also want to add some oily bits around the boxes and springs. Let me know what you think. I am never sure about weathering it is not a strong point of my modelling.

N15class
And here we have the five plank waiting for its coupling. I am quite pleased with the weathering on this. Please add any comments good or bad as I am struggling to get the finish. Back to some loco work for a bit. I have loads to do.
N15class
Well I guess its big catch up time. Whilst tiding my stock cupboard looking for something out I found I sold 21/2 years ago. I have hade an old Sprat and Winkle dia 1000 16´ horsebox. It´s always been a pain to store as its in an A4 size box 2¨ deep. It contained 1 fret and two small bags of casting, packed in a lot of air. My thoughts are build it, chuck the box problem solved. Obviously being hand drawn its not as good as more modern kits but hey it cost me less than 20 quid. So out came the soldering irons after some tidying up of the parts. All quite thin, and drawn in a peculiar manner as fare as folds and rivets are concerned. It also had the bottom panels divided in two horizontally, which I read was only on a few. So that was carefully removed. I made up the sides and ends in the flat as I thought this might be easier if butchery was required. Has anyone noticed the design error on the sides well one of them. I suppose I could of fixed it but I am sure not many will notice when painted etc. Some of the side details. Not perfect but a bit better than the 2 dimensions in the kit. I was quite surprised that the the body went together cleanly and squarely first hit. The underframe was pretty basic. It comes with W irons and springs etc, brake hangers and shoes, a vacuum cylinder, along with vees and brake levers that are not quite right. The rest is made up from spare etches or cobbled together. I also added a wooden sole bar to give something to fix the W irons to. There is a representation of the brake rods and levers added, it is 90% correct it looks right from the side, but certain bits are not attatch to the floor when the should be. Here we are with the underframe and body mated for a photo. I have found out I need to add a loop like a D handle to the top of each hinge on the bottom doors. The door rests on them when lowered onto the platform. Well that`s it for now. Hopefully I can get the primer out in the next day or so then get a bit of colour on it. By the way does anyone know where to get the Yellow SR transfers for these horseboxes?
