Washout at Dawlish

Recommended Posts

Don,

Really appreciate your photos sir.

Next time your down at Boat Cove can you see if some 'cops' by some intrepid spotter in the 70s/ early 80s are still there - I'm sure it used to say 46044 and 45xxx on the left hand side of the Kennaway tunnel portal, and last time I looked I think they were still there.

In about 1983 I repainted a mainline 00 peak and renumbered it as 46044 using A1 detailing parts (who remembers them), with sealed beam headlights on the strength of the 46044 number at the tunnel entrance.

If the number is still there god knows what was in the paint.......

My favourite lower quadrant home signal, ( with sighting board) used to show a train was imminent in my summer holidays at the Beach Hotel in the 70s. Love your photos of Dawlish Don - just wish there was more freight.

Thanks.......see what happens to your memory when you're 47.....

I definitely used a1 detailing parts and while I am sure it was in OO, the way I'm going perhaps it was gauge 1 !

Thanks

Yep, lots to see in the air and trains making extra stops too.:) We used the train to go to see the carnival at Dawlish last Friday, that was busy enough but the platform staff reckoned they may have 10,000 visitors tomorrow! :O

The airshow website implies that channel 4 will be filming, don't know if that's to do with the airshow or another series of "the railway" (or was that C5?).Cap'n Kernow did mention they ffilmed the log train at Riverside yard earlier this year....

Well I've not been informed either way, although I have attended most of the planning meetings with FGW and the air show organisers. I was wondering when the second series would be aired, perhaps it won't be until this years 'major events' are over?

Did I mention Dawlish was busy?

Had to vacate the seawall in Dawlish town at about 8.30 am

as it was getting too crowded to move in a wheel chair

Did not even get a chance to do a photo there

Dawlish Warren was also crowded

had to pull into a wider bit of the Redrock path after doing a U turn

to wait for room to move, but did get this shot

local service to Paignton, heading south for Dawlish & beyond

after all, just remembered, it is a railway forum!!

Crowds all along the seafront path all the way to Red rock

Heres a couple of pictures from today

Was a truly enjoyable day and was good to see how well Dawlish station is looking now after all the work since winter.

The pilot had  disappeared inland over Haldon Hills

and flew back out to sea right over our heads, low level

made all the kids in the crowd shriek

only just got the camera up in time!!

This one came across Teignmouth from the river, flew across the Brimley valley and on towards Dawlish

We were on Boat Cove beach most of the day, but went up on to Lea Mount to watch the Lancasters etc at the end in order to escape faster! Was a good show, enjoyed seeing the Canberra, Read Arrows and the Blades aerobatic team. Took loads of photos but not downloaded from camera yet...

The old Met Office in Bracknell had a mysterious door like that (albeit with a small balcony). Although I worked there for six years I never found out what it was used for... however shortly after the building closed I discovered the balcony was used as a filming position for the car chase in Casino Royale (1967).

Heads Up, Cap’n.

Hurricane Chistobal is currently heading more or less straight for Bermuda. Whilst not a Super Hurricane it will retain hurricane force winds until almost across the Atlantic. Of course it is making a beeline for the UK....probably in about 7 days, difficult to be precise.

Maximum sustained winds are 85 mph - it will decline in strength but it is possible that you may see gusts to 70mph. It is also possible that it may miss you altogether...

Just bear it in mind to check regularly with the Met Office from a couple of days hence.

Forewarned is Forearmed...

Best, Pete.

Thanks Pete. The Kernow Observer Corps on the westernmost tip of St Agnes has been alerted and sent an additional cagoule, plus a cheese sandwich. From there, a relay system from the Swagonian Streamlined Rowing Brigade will bring the news to a semaphore station at The Lizard, from whence it will be transmitted to the Kernow Emergency Weather Bunker, aka 'Geronimo's' Navaho-themed cafe under Dawlish station... ;)

And there you have it, Mike!

I like the Standard with their 25C heat!!!! We’re having a rather nice 32C today from a cool start to a cool evening.

What worries me is when the BBC say that "impact will not happen” - actually that really worries me............

One thing is for sure -  the K.O.C. at St. Agnes will be the first to know (but will they remember to tell anyone)?.

Best, Pete.

The Met Office will know before then Pete - they have various weather buoys to the west (and in other directions) of our fair land.
