was Banksie in Dawlish??

If it is banksie and the public finds out, someone will probably try and remove it damaging the tunnel wall. Best NR paints it out pdq.

This is in the network rail page with the picture from their dawlish camera

Final restoration work: September 2014

Our ‘orange army’ reaches an important milestone by starting improvement work on the final section of walkway between Rockstone and Coast Guard footbridges. Once complete, this improvement work means that every section of the walkway from Dawlish Warren to Teignmouth is open.

The work includes building a new wall in front of the existing sea wall to provide further protection against any future extreme weather, and reconstructing the walkway so that its height is level with the sections on either side. This means that it can be used in all tidal conditions, whereas historically this section was not accessible during high tides.

Temporary barge

To undertake this extensive work and ensure the railway can continue to operate as normal, a temporary barge is set up on the beach next to the railway line, to act as a base from which the ‘orange army’ can work. In October 2014, a second barge will be installed so that the work is completed as quickly as possible.

We were in Dawlish Warren earlier this week and walked along the sea wall, although the winds were not that strong there were high tides

and there was quite a lot of spray.

I got a couple of photos along the way including this one

Just seen on the BBC Spotlight facebook page that a Truck being used by Network Rail on the beach at Dawlish to repair the seawall has become overwhelmed by the incoming tide. Here is the story on the BBC news site:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-29241553

from the bbc article....

Network Rail said it was investigating how the truck became "overwhelmed by the incoming tide".

king canute on his lunch break maybe?

Strange isnt it, how history & 'popular' conceptions can get it wrong

I was reading the other day that he was not a fool thinking that he had the power to stop the waves coming in,

Rather he was effectively demonstrating that even a King can not stop certain forces,

with the sea you have to recognise at least 2 salient safeguards

1 never turn your back on the sea

2  Recognise that the first 3,4,5 waves may be 'average' but it often happens that the 6th or 7th one can be spectacularly more overwhelming

Certain dumper that had a sea dip

close up

The swing arm shovel, small digger, tracked wheelbarrow, & large dumper truck

are parked up right beside the Old Lifeboat house

this morning it looks like some remedial/rescue work was under way

men were seen with containers of liquid & a funnel

The rough weather has also moved a considerable amount of beach here

the bottom of the lifeboat slipway is now 3 feet above the beach exposing several steps down

post-22449-0-03140200-1411139643_thumb.jpg

compare this to last thursday (11th) when no steps were visible

EDIT;-

Yesterday Thursday morning did see  fibre glass debris,

way down by the viaduct, right by the brook outflow,

& could not identify what sort of car wing/front valance it was from

turns out it was part of the bonnet of the dumper that the storm  ripped off

I was told it was in the sea 24 hours!

thought I had photoed it but cant find it!

EDIT 2;-

the dumper is a TEREX TA 300

I went up to Teignmouth and Dawlish today. Work to stablise the cliff face near Teignmouth appears to be on going still with netting starting to be put in place.

I also noticed this old hut next to the line:

Anyone know what this used to be?

I think it is the remains of an old PW hut.

It stands next to an incline that is now overgrown. The roof is badly caved in and seems to be getting much worse lately.

This is an old lime burners hut.

In the 70's I walked past this many times whilst doing the sea wall signal lamps. The roof is much worse since February.

Haha, no it's not me, but it looks suspiciously like my old ex colleague and friend, who was senior railman. I won't put his name here but am pretty sure it is him.

I had moved to Southern rails in 1978 after 4 years at Teignmouth.

In those days the cliffs were full of nesting gulls and in the peak hatching season I once had to walk along a section of beach to the last signal to avoid being attacked.

Interesting,

so how did the lime stone get there,

was there a path along behind the rails to an access tunnel?

(not familiar at all with this stretch of track)

or did it predate the railway, though it don't look old enough for that

one assumes the finished product left UP the incline

On the Teignmouth side of the hut is a stone built wall shaped like an incline. Obviously somehow lime was brought down from the cliff above.
