Well with the gas price up over 20% alone today, and the fact that as renewables at the moment are just not performing, it is hardly surprising. Today around 70% of UK electricity involved burning something, with over 10% more power being improrted. If we actually switched over to all electric at the moment, I fear the lights may well go out.... 4 1
RMweb Premium corneliuslundie Posted December 22, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 22, 2021 The Freightliner switch was discussed on here a couple of weeks ago. Not surprising, though if the government was serious it could have prevented Network Rail putting up its electricity prices. And I am afraid I agree with Davexoc. Unless our government moves a lot faster to increase "green" generating and transmission capacity the lights will be going out in a few years. As an aside, the recent storms demonstrated another downside of "modernisation", namely that with BT switching steadily to an internet based telephone system a power cut will mean no telephone landlines. But let's enjoy Dave's photos from a time when environmental issues were not even being considered by governments. Jonathan 3 1

I bet Boris will keep that quiet! Martyn Just had a call from a friend with a property in France, wanting to know why I thought his previous 70c a day electricity consumption has recently become over 2 Euros a day. Simple: electricity costs up by nearly 300%, even in a country which uses mostly nuclear and HEP. Someone is taking the mickey....

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted December 22, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 22, 2021 Good evening, David. That is a great selection of photo’s of Milford Junction, which perfectly capture the atmosphere and spirit of the place as it was back on the 29th May, 1996. In C20927, with Loadhaul 56090, on a down train of empties, you have captured an everyday sight much improved with that excellent livery, and what a glorious portrait shot of another Loadhaul livered 56, 56085 in C20955. With warmest regards, Rob.

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted December 23, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2021 Good evening, David. That is a most excellent set of photo’s of Winwick Junction, from the 9th March, 1996. In the first one, with an unidentified class 87 leading a rake of Mklll’s on a down service, you can see the grubbiness of the lower regions of the carriages. A shame since that livery was so good when kept clean. Indeed, in C20786, with a Mklll DVT leading, with 87022, pushing at the rear of a Glasgow Central to Euston service, you can see all too clearly the thick band of grime along the lower bodyside. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted December 24, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 24, 2021 Good evening, David. That’s a most atmospheric set of photo’s of Nottingham Midland station from the early 1950’s. In JVol5045, with Black Five, 44959, hauling a Sheepbridge Engineering Annual Excursion train in about 1952, I’ve indentified the first carriage, thanks to the book, British Railways Pre Nationalisation Coaching Stock, Vol’ 2, SR & LMS. On page 414, you can see that the carriage is a diagram LYR157, by Hughes, a 54’ 0” x 9’ 0”, all third with nine compartments, seating 108 third class passengers. It is from the number series M15230M to M15241M. The last one, M15240M was withdrawn in July, 1960. With warmest regards, Rob. 1

Blackthorn
Merry Christmas David and thank you for another year of posting photographs daily. I was wondering what the clerestory coach would have been used for in jvol1053? Part of some sort of engineering train perhaps? I have recently come into the possession of one of the Hornby short clerestory coaches and was wondering what to do with it. 1952 would certainly be around the timeframe I would like to model. Thanks. MJ
