Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of Darlington from June and August, 1975. J4394, of class 55, 55005, on a down express in June, 1975, is a superb photo’ of the Deltic hauled train.

The photo’s of Manningtree are a splendid selection. J4306, of a Class 37, on a Peterborough to Parkeston Quay service, in May, 1975, is a great shot. I am, however, concerned about the man who can be seen walking, with his hands in his pockets, in the four foot on the left. I hope he was authorised to be there.

The last photo’ of a Class 47, on a Liverpool St to Norwich service, in April, 1978, is a most excellent photo’ of the white roofed 47.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

I should have mentioned in the caption that he was the signalman.  I think he'd been to the crossing gates - the is a low height road underbridge, any high vehicles use the crossing.

Darlington Class 40 Glasgow QS to Scarborough June 75 J4392

These Summer Saturday trains were still running 10 yrs later - we were on one in 1983 & 1985 to go on holiday. We joined at Edinburgh Waverley on one of the former 'sub' platforms (20/21) which were a bit of a schlep up the stairs, along a footbridge/passageway then back down again (particularly with luggage)

The signal might have reverted after the loco passed it?  Or could just be the effects of a zoom lens?

That's what confused me about up and down.

It does appear to have gone past the red signal but I cannot remember the details of the signals at Darlington as to whether there is another signal further along.

The last photo was taken during the S&D 150 event when the station was exceptionally busy and some strange things seem to have happened.

David

There were sometimes Local instructions which allowed trains to sit/start from in advance of the signal, usually to do with train length in the platform (Fort William springs to mind). Sometimes a back indicator ('OFF') was provided on the signal but not always.

Some great pictures there David,  green 40 in 75

The last on is actually on the down. Has the loco ran past the red?

Unusual for down  trains to use platform 1 but you have two pictures of it happening on here

It’s stood at D887 signal now T887 and still on the same gantry  (I think it’s an optical illusion so it’s not beyond the signal).
Ironically just today my train was routed into 1 northbound due to BTP attending a train that was occupying platform 4.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of the sidings and shed at Rolvenden on the Kent and East Sussex railway in 1975 and 1979. The last photo’ of Terrier, 3, in July, 1979, is a superb shot of it from the rear.

The photo’s of Stafford in 1966 and Standon Bridge in 1976 are an excellent set. J589, of Class 86, E3195, on an up freight train, in August, 1966, is a well composed photo’ of the 86 in between the masts.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of Edinburgh. The last photo’ of Class 27, 5374, on a Glasgow to Edinburgh service, in August, 1973, is a splendid shot of the train.

The black and white photo’s of the Midland Railway at Langely Mill and Linby, are a superb and most atmospheric set. The last photo’ of Linby, with MR 4F, 44404, on a four carriage passenger train from Mansfield to Nottingham, in May, 1952, is an excellent composition of the train by your Dad.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

I only noticed on second viewing of this selection, but E3041 definitely looks to have been repainted in rail blue syp.

In JVol4169 the smokebox numberplate has serif numbers. How common was that?

The shape of those numbers goes right back to Matthew Kirtley's day, for the cut-out brass digits used for numbering engines - so in use for a hundred years by the time of that photo.

Thanks for sharing, David.

The Warship hauled train in P880 looks like the penultimate coach is maroon, but that would be unusual as the Waterloo-Exeter stock was SR allocated and so if not Blue/Grey would have been green.

Wasn't there a lot of swapping  Mk1 stock about to release vehicles for rebuilding for the Bournemouth Electrification?

The gantry crane over on the right is part of Booths scrapyard, and was still there (most of it) yesterday when I took this photo:

There’s still a rickety shed where that one is bottom right. Maybe the same one!

The two white buffer stops centre mark roughly where the Holmes Chord dating from 1987 now diverges to join the Midland route into Sheffield. The tram-trains follow the shiny rails of the GC route running through the centre of the photo.

Edit: Google maps street view, as near as I can get it:

C7001: I wonder which class has more working survivors in 2024: Class 37 or Rover Metro? My money's on the English Electric!

I know two Metros still surviving around here which are in regular use, though one is in a bit of a state - putting it politely......!

Were the brake vans being stored or in use?

And just one has a white end.

Jonathan

I think at least some were still in use as older wagons were used for some workimngs.

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s from around Rotherham. J5548, at Rotherham Masborough, with a Class 08, in December, 1976, is a most excellent photo’ of a short freight working in snowy conditions. And the last photo’ of a Sheffield to Leeds service, on the 12th August, 1977, is a great shot, but the unit is a Derby Heavyweight, class 114 unit rather than the 108.

The photo’s of Winning and Cambois on the Blyth and Tyne, are a superb selection. C11758, at Winning, with 56127, on the 28th March, 1989, is a delightful and well composed shot of the 56.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Great pictures David

Where is Harlaxton now? Had a spell on the north Norfolk was completely unsuitable for passenger work. I think it was a combination of rock hard buffers and big outside cylinders  it used to knock hell out of the train . We actually had passengers throwing up, it was painful to ride behind it. Was worse when it was coasting down hill. I ruined a set of oleo buffers on a 27 when coupled to it
