eastwestdivide
C2621 also shows the Soviet cruise ship 'Mikhail Lermontov' Ah, the Soviet cruise ships. We sometimes had a "treat" of a day out from Medway, up to Gravesend and over to Tilbury on the ferry, and we were there once when a cruise ship was in - Essex wide boy market traders had set up in Tilbury Riverside station, selling luxury items like jeans and music cassettes. Were the Soviet crew allowed ashore, or were there enterprising passengers doing a roaring trade??

Interesting that a cab window headcode is in use, not the built-in one which I suppose would have had the winding handles removed. Many thanks for that. I've had a look at my notes and must have written down the wrong number on the day - which I find is easily donn when taking a photo and trying to read the number at the same time. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted July 23, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) A bit later than usual today as I've been to a friends retirement afternoon tea (with a free bar) this afternoon. The photos are all from Nottinghamshire, some even include trains. Two are canal photos, but with a railway connection. Kimberley GNR Grantham to Derby line April 69 J1593 Mansfield Woodhouse MR bridge over B6022 April 69 J1602 The car is Dad's Triumph Vitesse (FBT 717 D). Next we move to Worksop. Worksop East snowplough DE330963 April 69 J1605 Worksop East Class 114 Lincoln to Sheffield Victoria April 69 J1606 The remaining two photos were taken at West Stockwith, where the Chesterfield Canal left the River Trent. The canal was opened in 1777 it became a part of the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR) on 9th July 1847. Later the MS&LR became the Great Central Railway. The Chesterfield end of the canal fell out of use around 1910, the rest of the canal was disused by the 1960s, except for the basin at West Stockwith used by the yacht club based there. In recent years part of it has been restored and re-opened. I hope the photos may of use to those who model canals as part of their layout. West Stockwith MSLR Chesterfield Canal Sept 62 J1474 This photos show the River Trent end of the lock and the lock keeper's house. West Stockwith MSLR Stockwith basin Jan 63 J1477 This was taken during the very cold winter, eventually the whole basin froze with ice around 18" thick. The lock into the River Trent is in the background, there are a couple of old goods van in use for storage. The canal left the basin at the bottom right. The lock into the basin could take Humber Keels and Sloops, the actual canal took narrow boats. Edited to correct the dates of the Worksop photos. jonny777
J1606 I suspect the rear unit is a Cravens, but I will let Rob have the final say - as he is an authority on these things.

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted July 23, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 23, 2016 Hi, Dave. Excellent photos from Nottinghamshire today. In J1606, the rear unit is a Cravens power trailer twin unit, with the DMBS leading - you can just nicely make out the exhaust pipes coming up through the roof of the guards van. The last photo is so atmospheric, and I feel absolutely sure it would make a great oil painting. I just wish we could go back to those days. With warmest regards, Rob. great central
Kimberley station building is still there, the trackbed is a car park. Further along is a 'nature trail' including (or certainly did some years ago) a miniature buffer stop with a plaque pointing out that in past years a large number of trains passed there every 24 hours (it does say how many but I can't rermember!). There was a farce over the footbridge which was dismantled to be refurbished and replaced over the car park but 'by mistake' some or all of it got cut up for scrap . The former goods yard occupied at the time of the picture by a timber merchant is now under housing. Worksop East signal box is still there, albeit unused for many years, the land opposite being the site of an aborted Tesco store.
flapland
Another great set of pictures. The Bus in J1605 looks so like a modern New Routmaster(Boris Bus) although of course can't be. Anyone have any ideas what it is as the styling looks different to the usual buses of the time.

flapland
After a bit of research I found out it is Daimler Fleetline with a Alexander body. Similar preserved one. When I was adding the dates to the captions I got the year completely wrong - and I should have known because the trailing dmu (the Class 105) in J1606 has full yellow ends and appears to be painted blue. So it is actually April 69 not 63. Of course I could just blame the year display on my time machine... David
RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted July 23, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) HI David J1605 has a photo of DE330963, the Worksop plough. Thank you for the photo, I had DE330963 listed as an LNER Group standard tender. The photo of the Worksop plough I am thinking of is a Group standard with the centre section of the coal plates removed, looks most odd, blow if I can find the photo. I have found another picture of DE330963 Second bit of confusion, the photo I found of DE330693 states it was converted in 1966, your dad's photo is from 1963.
