eastwestdivide
I wonder if those Conflat Ls (C2124) were still in revenue service, or if they were in internal use? They're next to what appears to be an internal use SR ballast hopper (Walrus?). What would the Conflats carry though, and where would it fit into the steelmaking process? Sheerness used scrap as raw materials rather than doing it the hard way if that's any help. They did have a whole bunch of internal users. Edit: Paul Bartlett has a few photos of Conflats at Sheerness in 1980, e.g. : http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/queenboroughsheerness/h17e2510b#h17e2510b that don't show any obvious COND markings. ...and that ballast hopper by the look of it: http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/queenboroughsheerness/h17e2510b#h2c267a0d Edited October 19, 2014 by eastwestdivide
jonny777
I always believed those small containers carried powdered limestone. Could that be used with scrap metal to produce some form of recycled steel product? Edited October 19, 2014 by jonny777
Fat Controller
I always believed those small containers carried powdered limestone. Could that be used with scrap metal to produce some form of recycled steel product? Not limestone, which was added at the blast-furnace during iron-making , but 'burnt' lime or mag-lime; this was added elsewhere during the steel-making process. Not sure what its role was- I seem to remember something about it being used in connection with removing impurities. At this point, we need Arthur... RMweb Gold Market65 Posted October 19, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 19, 2014 Hi, Dave. More excellent photo's today. The first one of Market Overton has a really lovely ex-GNR carriage leading. Then the photo's of Paddington are very nostalgic, what a line-up of HST's in original condition in the first photo', and a good photo' of a 47 - 47637 on 27th, July, 1988. jonny777
The 6-PUL units have always intrigued me. My old ABC says they seated 12 first class and 16 second class, but it says nothing about the catering facilities. Did these coaches provide on train meals, and if so, was that just for the Pullman passengers or for the first class customers in the adjacent composites? My old ABC says they seated 12 first class and 16 second class, but it says nothing about the catering facilities. Did these coaches provide on train meals, and if so, was that just for the Pullman passengers or for the first class customers in the adjacent composites? The Pullman was a kitchen composite. The other coaches all had compartments, so I presume the only passengers with on train meals were in the Pullman car. jonny777
Thanks David, especially for the link. I had looked on the SEMG site but not found any precise details, but the SEG site was one I had not known until now. Edited to correct my diabolical spelling. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted October 21, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 21, 2014 Hi, Dave. What astonishingly great photo's of York tonight. J220, of B1 61162, in August, 1965, is a sight which I remember well from that time just before Dr. Beeching closed the line to Hull via Market Weighton later that year. J223, also dated August,1965, is a lovely photo' of the way in which the original station was reached by the railway, and also shows a Mk1 Royal Mail coach. Finally, J703 is a great overall view of York Yard with the WD 2-8-0 in the background. How it has changed with the new Network Rail building there. Please keep these photo's coming. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted October 22, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) On the Southern again this evening at Waterloo and Clapham Junction. The first one was taken while I still lived in Essex. The next two were taken when I had a bit of time to spare before catching a train at Kings Cross after work related meetings in London. Waterloo and Clapham Junction were very easy to get to from the usual meeting venue. The final two were taken the day before flying to Zurich for a month in Switzerland to use a Swiss Rail Pass, which resulted in around 2,000 slides of Swiss Railways, the first of a number of visits.
