Class 800 - Updates

Strange that this axle counter issue doesn't involve Class 387 EMUs; Is it the act of raising/lowering the pantograph and starting/ceasing to draw power that causes the problem, rather than electric operation itself ?

IETs are much more powerful than the 800s 387s so they are electrically more 'noisy' so that might be the issue.

Doesn't necessarily have much to do with it - the critical part is what sort of electronic emissions are coming out of the train, basically their power, duration,  and frequency.  Those emissions should have been comprehensively monitored during type testing - that's why testing can take so long nowadays - and have been checked through all the test programme paperwork against every single electrical/electronic item in the area where a train is going to run.  that's why various modern trains are not allowed on infrastructure where certain types of electronic based track circuiting is in use.

 

if the test programme had been properly prepared and thoroughly carried out an issue such as this is alleged to be simply should not happen - it would have been known about, and mitigated in some manner or another before the trains had even entered passenger service.  BTW we're not back to hotbox detectors are we, and not axe counters?

Ah, but that's nothing new is it. A number of modern trains (including currently the 387s on GWML) are having to have pan mods to 'tune' the pan to the overhead. We seem to have been managing such situations for at least the past 20 years with 100% British kit l)

 

(In the meanwhile I can but hope that once Class 345 British built junk heaps (and these things really are junk heaps in terms of lack of passenger facilities) get past Maidenhead their pantographs will dissolve into a myriad of tiny pieces and the answer to the problem will not be found for at least 30 years which should see me out of having to endure these atrocious excuses for 'a train'.)

You feel strongly about these trains, don't you?!

I wonder if they've considered fitting loos to just one carriage (talking 345s here, not 800s of ocurse) with some reasonably obvious way of indicating which one? That way people who really need one could have access, and it would be an improvement over the non-corridor trains we used to have where you had to make sure you got into the right carriage (or part of carriage) or you were stuck?

 

Of course they would then need the infrastructure to empty the toilets at the depot(s) which presumably at present they don't - another advantage (to the operator) of leaving the toilets off...

Axle counter issue at Cholsey station meaning all down sHitachis must run on diesel between Reading and Didcot, up line not affected.

item appeared on late notices from 21:34 on 12/03/18.

As of 18/04:

 

The issue of the Axle Counter at Cholsey has been resolved and IETs in the Down direction can now travel “pans up” from Reading to the normal Power Change Over Point at Moreton Cutting.

019 made it back to the Great Western yesterday after corrections in Doncaster. As it "should" of completed its fault free running on its last delivery, passenger service should not be to far off! 

Leaves 036/001/002/007/003/004 to follow. Last 800/0 diagram starts on the 30th April, totalling 30 units. It is expected these diagrams shall continue until the timetable is totally re-configured at the end of the year. 

 

Yesterdays PR of the TPE 802/2 also highlighted that the Agility East 800/801s shall remain in DfT base grey livery. Though whether VTec applies vinyl remains to be seen closer to December. Shame, as the propose VTec livery looked perfectly Virgin.

A little news on 800020.  This member of the GWR Class 800 fleet has been named after Bristolians Bob Woodward and Elizabeth Ralph.  Full news article from GWR here: https://www.gwr.com/about-us/media-centre/news/2018/april/bristol-heroes-celebrated-with-train-naming .  I found out first hand by photographing it yesterday on a Worcester to Paddington service.
