Class 66 in OO Gauge - New Announcement

We’ve given Hatton’s plenty to think about. If a sound chamber hasn’t been planned but is now being considered, I think it’s better to let Dave get on with chatting to the experts rather than try to rush him. I’m sure he’ll let us know once the decision has been made.

True and I agree. I just needed more subject material to stick in more bin puns...

Very nice indeed, Dave. Is there any chance of showing the artwork for the versions which haven’t appeared yet? For example, the plain DRS.

Just looked at Hattons website and the DRS Compass and plain (link) are both on their website now along with some of the GBRF ones. Colas and a few Freightliner & GBRF ones still to be added by the looks. Looking good!

Wow this is just fantastic! My account is definitely going to get a good hammering next March... Thank you to all involved for making this happen. All for me now (personally) would be the blue Freightliner 66623.

Hi Dave,

This is going to be a superb model.  Two things though (and I'm sorry if they have been covered before):

1).  Will the nem coupling on these, fit into a hole in the locos front valence, with a plug provided (will leave a square visible), or will there be separate valences for the modeller to fit with a choice of ones with a hole for the nem coupling, and another containing screwlink/buckeyes as appropriate?

2).  On the pipe that is split between the body and bogie, would there be any chance of looking into making this of a flexible material, so it could be of one part, connected to the body and bogie.  I know in the grand scheme of things it is nothing, but every time I look, I think it would be an improvement, if you could look into it and see if it were feasible.  Plus thin plastic detail like that, particularly on the bogie, is very likely to get knocked off/broken on platform edgers etc., especially when the locomotive is on a curve.

Congratulations on what is sure to be a fantastic model, that you and your team at Hattons can be rightly proud of.

Best Wishes,

C.

Hi dogbox,

Thanks for the questions.

1. There will be 2 valances provided for each end.  One will have a hole for the coupling, the other will have a solid panel as per the real locomotive.  To swap it will be a case of unclipping the body and removing 1 screw to release the valance. They will be fitted with one of each from the factory as standard with the others included in the box.

2. We have looked into this part (and the sand pipes) with much detail.  The materials that can be used for flexible parts in models have been researched but these pipes are below the minimum recommended thickness for reliable operation.  If we made them the correct thickness then either the part would not mold properly or it would perish within a short time of use due to the repetitive motion of the rotating bogie.  The minimum thickness recommended is far thicker than these pipes should be and would not appear accurate if used.

Also, the bogies pivot a lot more on the model than in real life to accommodate tighter radius curvature, so the pipe would either need a lot more ‘sag’ or be very flexible to stretch.  The sag would make the pipes very non prototypical, the stretch, similar to the movement, would fatigue the material, especially on the sand pipes which have a lot of movement due to them being on the outer ends of the bogies.

These parts will be produced from a plastic (delrin) that is not suitable for flexing that much.  It will move a bit but not enough to allow the bogie to swing to a required level. We have made them as long as possible and still allow free movement of the bogie.  They are the same material as other bogie/underframe components on other models and are fully in gauge so should not cause a problem with platform sides etc.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Dave

So, just sixty-two versions of EWS livery all virtually identical aside from the number?  Hmmmmmm...

On a constructive note though, an option would be to take a model of 66005 and perhaps have a go at renumbering to virtually any of those in your list?   ;)

Hi Dave

A question if I may...  Has it been decided if or/and how nameplates will be supplied for the named variants, ie. separate nameplates in a bag or nameplates already attached?  Obviously I cannot speak for everyone, but my own preference (and it would seem also the preference of many others from similar discussions around other models) would be separate nameplates in a bag and no printed nameplates on the bodyside, thus allowing the opportunity for modellers to renumber if they wish without having to remove printed nameplates from ribbed bodysides...

Oh, and if etched nameplates are to be included then with any luck they will be Shawplan?  (...as opposed to those awful things that Dapol tacked onto their Class 68?)

thanks

Al

There is a small possibility that the OP is being sarcastic....

People seem to keep asking Hattons to announce every livery/variation of 66 that's ever made before the model is here. Give them a chance to actually get the first releases done! We are spoilt for choice with so many announced to begin with as it is, I'm sure the more unique locos will be produced in due course.

Most locomotives that have nameplates wouldn't be able to be renumbered due to being oneoffs and having special liveries such as 66789 & 66783.

It would be nice to know what they are planning regarding the nameplates whether separate or fitted.

I think the reason people are asking for so many different special livery/variations in one go is because they don't won't Bachmann to do the version they want with the old tooling which may make Hatton's not do the same livery on their version in the future.

I'm not sure Bachmann would be able to produce them quickly enough.  Aren't the Hattons ones due in six months?  It'll be interesting what happens with the Bachmann 66 - the prices are already not too far south of the Hattons price.

With secondhand Bachmann ones currently being the only ones within my budget (I'm not even including the Hornby model) I am also keen to see how/when they are affected. Some of the prices of secondhand ones on the likes of Ebay are laughable.

I checked 66596 today the battery switch is as per all the others so it was just that small batch of locomotives that were different

I saw one the other day it had a news paper in the cab it may have been the 'Sun' not sure, but can we have a 66 like that...sorry its the heat :senile:
