Newbryford's mostly Yellow workbench - "it's a drag, man......."

Very nice! You. Ale all this work look so easy! That PFA looks great and as a 57 nutter that model of 307 looks lovely, will it be ran on New Bryford at Blackburn?

 

Hope so - depends on me sorting out a suitable sound decoder/speaker.

Maybe I should get on with my NMT mark2.

 

In the meantime, here's a few pics of my previous attempt using Hurst Models sides.

As with any contemporary modelling, recent pics are an absolute must.

Searching flickr with any of the vehicle numbers will bring up loads of photos - it just needs a bit of filtering to find recent stuff.

 

The NMT normally runs as 2+5 but there is a nominated spare to cover for maintenance - this is 977995 with the pale grey roof, also lacking the blue bodyside stripes at the time I modelled it. It is fitted with a generator and has modifications to the roof at one end.

This is the panto car in 2009/2010 format. There has been some additional equipment added in the meantime and the blue stripes have also since gone - the stripes are being eliminated from the NMT as the vehicles are refurbished/repainted. (see pic link below)

 A chance conversation with the guy that designed the original optical system told me that 977993 is usually in the centre of the set to minimise interference from the power car exhaust!

 

This is the staff car 977984 showing a few extra vents on the roof.

Incidentally, the Hornby intermediate cars include 977996 - this was the battery car that only ran with the hybrid power car 43089. 977996 now resides at Bachmann Barwell in use as a conferece room!

i made a rake of the dc kits pfa's a few years back to vaguely model the low level waste wagons, they were a swine to build, a nice simple kit but (assuming i built them right) you have to assemble them with the wheels in place as there is no way to get them in once glued together and there is very little room for error or indeed movement once the glue is set, in fact i ended up cutting one of the axle boxes off and fabricating a new one out of plastistrip in order to get the wheels to turn on one of them!

 

the boxes i made by cutting down the existing cawoods containers to something approximate, a bit rough and ready but they looked the part, ended up selling them on ebay a while back

Hi Jim,

I'm looking at various ways to do the low level containers - possibly by cutting down the Cawoods boxes, or maybe even running with 8' boxes as were carried on a trip to Hull Docks. The other loads are the smaller boxes carried on a heavy duty steel framed base. There's been a few trips through Preston recently with these to/from Berkeley, supposedly conveying waste from Aldermaston.

Searching flickr for any of the DRS fleet can bring up some interesting formations - even PFA's running with FNA's.

Although New Bryford is there, I've roped in enough operators to let me out for the weekend, manning a demo stand, trying to build yellow stuff (and DC Kits PFA's). However, it's near enough to NB so that I can see that my team are not breaking it.

I recently had a suitable t-shirt made for me.

At the Blackburn Ex today, we had a civic visit from the local lady mayor. I was introduced by our club chairman and he explained to her about my modelling stand and pointed out the t-shirt. She asked why it said "fifty shades of yellow", but there was only one on the models.

I replied, "It's just a bit of fun, but if you look closely at the roofs of the models, you'll find three shades of grey.........................."

 

She smiled politely.

The 20/3's to accompany the PFA's are coming along.

I'm doing 20305 and 20309 so I can have a couple of variations, although there aren't many within the working fleet.

20305 has short bonnet handrails and no upper headlight, whereas 20309 has full length handrails and headlight.

 

They each have odd bogies - with one drilled and one undrilled equalising beam. As I have a loco with each type, it's easy to swap over bogies between the pair. the bogie swap will probably be one of the last jobs.

 

Quick snaps as always........ including the dust!

 

All detail is removed from the cab ends and any extra holes filled in.

The cabside window corners are "squared off" in readiness for the new frames - as it turned out, I had to enlarge the openings along the lower edges to make the frames fit.

The nose end detail is removed and filled - this is the "first fix" and requires a bit more finishing off.

The headlight and MU connector are pieces of styrene suitably shaped. These are a tad oversize and will be cut down with a sharp knife once the solvent is fully set.

These are the latest item from Shawplan - laser cut Wipac light surrounds. They are in two pieces - the larger one is the back half. Obviously a "larger than life" pic and they do clean up easily.

This is 20305 with the cab side widow frames fitted - they're painted blue on 305, so it's easy to add them now. 309's bare metal frames will be added after full painting. The cab front windows on 305 and 309 are unpainted and will be added later

These are the cabs with the Wipac base units fitted - they are painted yellow, so I'll add the top unit after full painting - the top sections will be painted black first though.

The fuel tanks are still loose at this point, but the grilles have been altered.

On B side (cab at the left), just the small grille has been added after removing the moulded full height grille. The kit does include enough etches to replace both full grilles, but I thought I'd see if I can get away without replacing them all.

On the A side, it's a little more complicated. The grille/door/grille is removed and then replaced with etches for half/full/full grilles.

edit: Just realised the tanks are place the wrong way round. The lifting lug along the top edge should be at the cab end. At least they're not glued in place yet.

As usual good stuff, glad you noticed before you glued. When I made the hoist I superglued something wrong almost had a melt down before Kal saved the day with nail varnish remover. Although he said had I left it it probably would not have managed to save the day.

Hi Jaz,

We've all done it and will probably do it again. The tanks are now labelled with marker pen on the back........... As are the cabs, bodies and chassis.

I have to keep double checking as there's subtle differences between my two locos and I don't want to "mix and match".

Other differences between 20305 and 20309 are visible in this pic. Principally down to the two rebuild batches - 20301-20305 at Brush and 20306-20312 at RFS.

The NRN roof pods are mounted in different lcoations - 20305 has it near the bonnet, whilst it's fairly central on 20309. The mounting plate is smaller on 305. The NRN pod is also the opposite way round on the two batches.

The Wipac lights are also mounted at different heights and 305 has an aerial mount. Although it's not visible on my proto pic, I think 309 is the only one that doesn't have the mount.

Is it me, or does 305 still have remnants of the last door above the side tanks on that photo Mick, or is it a panel line?  kev.

Just checked my other 20305 pics and it's just a panel line. it's the same on the other side. Most of the other 20/3's have a flush panel, 305's is slightly proud. It may be that they just welded the door in place.

After a week or more off due to exhibitions/work/heavy cold, I've managed a bit of time in the shed. The 20/3's are now ready for the yellow ends, as is a DBS 60. The next batch of yellow is now under way with SGT2 977985/977986, TIC 2 977974, PLPR1 72631 and PLPR3 1256 on the bench.

 

Future projects with donor stock already on the shelf will be generators 6262/6263 (to make up the full fleet), another pair of RTOV's, probably 9701/9703, a pair of Mk3 DVT's for the PLPR's 82111/82124, another BFR 99666 and possibly another PLPR, either 72639 or 5981.

 

Then I'll probably need another DRS 37 or two and maybe a couple of 67's!

Oh and there's a Lima 73 being done as 73107 for tagging DIT on the back..........

 

The PFA's are coming along slowly, but I'm waiting for some developments in the 3D world with half-height boxes.............................

 

At least the next show isn't until February.

Just over a year ago, I completed the RSC3 set with 977997 and brake force runners 1256/5981/9481. Since then, 1256 and 5981 have been converted to Plain Line Pattern Recognition vehicles and a change of window layout.

 

1256 was a RFO conversion with a couple of windows blanked out.

However, since it's alteration to a PLPRV, one of the blanks has been opened out with a half window.

As Airfix/Dapol FO's are easy/cheap to get hold of, I decided to do the updated version. The half sized window has come from one of my donor BSO's and grafted into place and blanks added to fill the holes.

The other side now has two windows filled.

Allowed to set fully overnight, then I'll fill the gaps and sand down.

A quick tip for fitting blanks.

If it's a fully flush blank and doesn't need the window frame retaining, I slice off the frame and file out the window corners to square. This makes it easy to fit new blanks. In the case of a window that retains the frame, the blank, or in this case grille, has to be carefully profiled to fit the opening.

5 minutes with a couple of files, fine wet and dry and a fibreglass brush, then a quick dusting of primer. This is the result.

Also visible in this pic are the small pieces of styrene added in behind the blank on the other side. These are simply to reinforce the joint and prevent any movement of the blank and potetntial cracking of the filler in the future.

Just a couple of small blemishes to fix.

 

99666 and 977986 are next - these have all windows, except the door windows, blanked off.

The window frames are sliced off with a very sharp scalpel and then the last part of the moulding is scraped off with a curved blade.

Top quality work!

 

"The Railway" on channel 4 last night had a small piece on the HST measurement train showing all the equipment on board. I thought of this thread when watching. Probably still available on 4O if you are interested.
