  1. Another vote of thanks to all involved. An interesting an thought provoking weekend. Adrian
  2. There were (are ?) quite a lot of them in Birmingham and Black Country giving access to the canals for the same reason. Adrian
  3. Might the inside walls have been coated with lime wash ? Adrian
  4. My IIA was called Murgatroyd, and no one ever called her ugly. Adrian
  5. Many people I know were glued to the 87 event. I subsequently had the opportunity to sail a 12M (in calmer conditions), and they were quite a boat, and one that looked similar to something that you might find in your local marina. I think the Prada/Swiss thing is informed gossip at the moment. Adrian
  6. Gates at the bottom end of the course are far from new, but when there are two marks at the top, you usually go around the outside, not between them. Looks like hostilities commence next Wednesday. Adrian
  7. I'm not sure that progress isn't over rated. From a technology point of view the AC75s are outstanding, but are they making for good match racing (my view is not). I had the opportunity to watch a weekend of match racing at close quarters last year in Elliot 6Ms (6 metre keelboat, 3-4 crew), and they were providing far closer racing. Dial ups, tacking and gybing duels etc. As for TV coverage, does anyone remember the 12Ms off Freemantle in 1987 (the UK had a weekly TV programme covering the entire series). That was getting good ratings. And remember the number of challengers there were with 12Ms and the IACC boats. The outcome of the final will be interesting. It looks as though a Kiwi win will see Ineos as Challenger of Record (so more of the same next time around). Rumour has it that if the Italians win, the Swiss will be the CoR, and it will back back to something more conventional.
  8. Going back to the various steam locos based (however loosely) on BR standards, I have a recollection that in the late 70s there was a suggestion (not sure how serious) that a new set of steam locos were built specifically for the pithead - power station traffic. Does anyone else remember that, and did anything appear on the sketch pads (prior to the drawing board) ? Adrian
  9. Another vote for Ambergate - Chinley. Adrian
  10. I think I'm with Red Leader on this one. The Queensbury route would have been an interesting journey, but I'm not sure closing it was a stupid mistake. Likewise there were plenty of other routes around the area, now gone, but probably not really missed. Skipton-Colne would fit the bill. Adrian
  11. The south starts at Bawtry (and the north when you cross the Tees). Adrian
  12. That's cruel, you could have least done it by Ridings. So many to choose from, methinks the Wensleydale route. Adrian
  13. Hmm. Toss up between the Wensleydale route and the Stainmore route. I think as part of the Wensleydale is still there (and hopefully more to come) and almost all of it is south of Northallerton, then I'll plump for the Stainmore. Adrian
  14. Has he got beyond page three of that paper yet ? Adrian
  15. That'll be the Belah viaduct on the South Durham and Lancashire Union, so part of it comes under North East (it was part of the NER). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Durham_and_Lancashire_Union_Railway Just down the road from Bleath Gill However, the vote from the Figworthy jury is for the Woodhead route. Adrian
  16. A goodly selection of rather splendid pictures. Adrian
  17. At my school. custard powder would have been a good start. Adrian
  18. Mum trained as a nurse in the early 50s. The old hands (those who predated the NHS started) were complaining about how wasteful the NHS was. Adrian
  19. Perhaps one of the staff can sort it out once the crate has been unloaded, or the engine shed door replaced. Adrian
  20. That would be another interpretation. Adrian
  21. Get a diesel engined series Land Rover, once that's running, you can't hear any odd noises. Adrian
  22. Going back to Primrose Hill, have we had this yet ? Adrian
