There is a lane near here that has a 30/de-restricted sign (depending on direction). The de-restricted part is a single file, two hundred yard dead end. I do sometimes wonder if the highways department gets a bonus for each sign they put up. Adrian

TV Shows / Films That Nobody Else Seems to Remember?!

Interesting. I picked up series one and two 3-4 years back for not much (from someone at work). Adrian -

Thanks for the continuing set of pictures and narrative. What is the device on the left hand side of the smoke box, looks a bit like an exhaust pipe. Adrian

I'm in the later stages of building the Rumney version, and, having followed the instructions was somewhat confused as to how I was supposed to fit the wheels as one of the linkages appeared to run below the axle level. A quick email to Justin confirmed that this is where it is supposed to run, the solution being to either fit the wheels before the brake linkages (and not be able to remove them), or once the linkage is installed and soldered in, cut the section of linkage in line with the axle. You'd have to get at a very specific angle to notice once the wheels are in. I suppose if you're really keen, you could make that section removable, which I'm assuming is what happens with the prototype. Adrian -
Not sure if this works for hippos, but the Japanese have come up with a means of scaring off bears. Might be useful for keeping cake supplies safe. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/japan-robot-wolves-bears-takikawa-b1721857.html (other news outlets available) For the avoidance of doubt, there is no cake here, but the manor's HR department would welcome expressions of interest from any cake makers looking for a new role. Some years back, a mate of mine used to have a high street shop (albeit at the low rent end of the high street). Turned out that the landlord was one of the Oxford colleges. Some amusement when the shop next door was briefly taken over by some ladies offering "personal services". Was a college being funded by immoral earnings ? Adrian

And there would be very little shipping, hardly anything went up the river above Sharpness. The barges that hit the bridge missed the entrance to Sharpness docks (due to thick fog), they should have gone under the swing bridge over the canal. Adrian -

The previous owner of Figworthy Manor put on an extension, which I insisted was signed off by the council before I completed the purchase. The surveyor and myself lost count of the number of points on which it should have failed (and that was before we found the ones that were hidden). Apparently the inspection was carried out over the phone as he was unable to gain access to do it in person. Council employee rather than private. I gather he retired shortly afterwards. The cost of the remedial work was approaching 5 figures. Adrian -

Also available on DVD. As others have said, an excellent set of series, helped by the script, although I thought that the last one wasn't as good. Surely overdue a repeat. Adrian -
If you want a motor, rather than a solenoid, and Tortoises (or Cobalts) are too big, have you looked at servos ? Adrian

Welland played P.C. Graham, Weir was played by Joseph Brady. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129723/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#cast There are quite a lot of familiar names who appeared in odd episodes, who went on to better things. Adrian -

16mm photo-plank - Pillar Drill and test wall
figworthy commented on Fen End Pit's blog entry in Fen End Pit's Blog
Outstanding, as has been the rest of the workshop. I think the wall idea is good in principle, but I'm not sure about having predominantly vertical stones (above the right hand, level with the ear) in it, but if such things exist in the wild, fine. Adrian -
Isn't that out of gauge ? Ought to be 7' 0.5" by 4' 8.5" Adrian

I've been looking at the 1945 coverage for some time, and I take the date with a substantial pinch of salt. There are places that I know had airfields by that date, but they are not visible (I doubt that they were all that well camouflaged), on the other hand, there are some prefab houses that appear just down the road from me, and talking to one of my late neighbours who lived in one of them, they were post 1945 (but not by much).
