  1. I was taking photos north of Carlisle station at Caldew Junction on 20 August 1992 when a down express approached headed by Class 87 87012. As it drew near there was this almighty bang and I noticed two 'waterfalls' of liquid starting to pour out of the loco. It started to slow down and went about a quarter of a mile before stopping near Etterby Bridge at Kingmoor. Anyone and idea what caused this? The truncated track at the bottom all that is left of the freight avoiding line.
  2. Nay, I'm not on your picture. Cant remember where I took the photo, possibly Stalbridge. It was New Years Day and we had consumed a fair bit of ale the night before
  3. I was on the Mendip Merchantman Tour. Here is a photo of 35011 I took on the day.

  5. 70004 was sheded at Carlisle Canal for a few months in the middle of 1963. Here is a shot of it being repaired in Canal shed. Its condition is far from its immaculate Golden Arrow days.
  6. Small point with J413.. Black 5 numbering started at 44658. So 44617 is probably a typo?
  7. Here is another photo I took on the same day with a better view of the cranes. .
  8. Here is a shot I took around 1965-66 and at that time there were two cranes in use. There is a lorry between the cranes so it was possible to get alongside the loading platform while the cranes were there. On this page at the bottom is a photo of a small diesel unit and trailer. http://tour-scotland-photographs.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/old-photograph-railway-station-kyle-of.html
  9. In the latter part of 1965 I had to travel from Carlisle to Cardiff, changing trains at Newport. While waiting for a train I started talking to a railway worker who told me not to catch the first train to Cardiff but wait for the second on which was steam hauled. Sure enough, the train arrived hauled by 7029 Clun Castle. The worker told me this was a regular working for 7029. Its home shed at that time was Gloucester Horton Road. Does anyone know anything about this regular working and the dates involved? I took quite a lot of photos of it, being the last working Castle. Here are a couple I took at Cardiff.
  10. Here is a shot I took in Carlisle in the early 1960s. Not a car expert so I don't know the maker or type.

  14. I use Bluehost to hold all my photos and data. Initial prices range from $3.95 a month. You have unlimited webpace, unlimited MySQL and other databases, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited email accounts, ftp and you can host as many domains as you wish. It also supports php and other scripting languages. There are dozens of open source php photo album scripts on the web which are easy to upload and set up. If you use databases, using phpmyadmin you can backup and download your data in SQL or CSV mode. I have been using them for over 10 years with bsically no problems. https://www.bluehost.com/ https://www.bluehost.com/shared

  16. Today in the Sunday Times... Train operators promised fresh taxpayer cash Taxpayers may have to pump millions of pounds into ailing rail franchises under bold plans being considered by ministers. Faced with dwindling interest from potential bidders for new train franchises — including the combined West Coast and HS2 franchise — the government is examining a controversial subsidy regime. Under the plans, the government would pay train companies if their revenue significantly undershoots forecasts. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/business/train-operators-promised-fresh-taxpayer-cash-z796fcncv
  17. I was amazed when I came across Grange 6858 on Huddersfield shed while on a railrover in 1964. Nottingham Victoria was the farthest north that Great Western locomotives ventured down the Great Central, except on rare occasions. One of these occasions took place on 15 August 1964 when engine No. 6858 Woolston Grange working the Poole to Bradford/Leeds train, and which normally would have come off at Leicester or Nottingham, managed due to an oversight by control, to reach Huddersfield. However, en route, it had hit the platform edge at Berry Brow station between Penistone and Huddersfield. The loco was quickly removed to Huddersfield shed where it languished well inside until it was towed to Crewe as an out of gauge load two weeks later.
