Track level equipment at oil terminals and sidings
KeithHC replied to The Pilotman's topic in UK Prototype Questions
Try this one it might help. Keith -
Always good to see you on here and you are one of my inspirations to get on and model. I think it is safe to say that all of us here on Rmweb are here to help and listen. When you want to speak about anything we are here. Plus we all want too see more of your modelling but only when the time is right for you. Keith

Track work is looking good. I am soon to start doing some em track as ingot a resin printer for Christmas and already have an fdm as well. Like you I will need to paint the bases but I am also thinking of painting the chairs whilst still on the production bed once detached from the machine. Keith

I bought a copy of Parkin recently as I need the dimensions for my cad design of DEMUs. Very helpful as there are also the dimensions of the trussing as well. Keith

Just checked the Golding plans book. Now I know it can sometimes be inaccurate but it does show all the carriages having the one standard length. KEITH

Looking forward to this one. It is a unit I would like to model in 3D one day. It’s a pity that the late Colin Parks thread will not be available it would give you lots of information. Keith

Lez don’t know if you are aware. There are a few Stroud picture threads about on FB and recently I saw a picture of Dunbridge junction. Sorry to Nick the thread btw fantastic pictures and wonderful modelling of Sevenoaks. Just a pity it not a central division layout. Keith

The Bluebelle has a very good website with web pages for the majority of its stock. Also in the past week there have been photos on Facebook of the 73 having a bit of work done. Keith

I seam to believe that the Mk6 bogie is also used by the class 73 electro diesel as well. Also to add to the mix the original CIG/Big had Mk5 power bogies later ones had the Mk6. Keith

If I had a Time Machine ....
KeithHC replied to TheSignalEngineer's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
For me it would be two different places. First would be back to either summer 65 or 66. During one of those summers I went with my Dad on an official outing of the Mullards research labs photo society to Nine Elms. I did not take any note of what locos where there. It was a summer Saturday afternoon. When ever I see David Shepards painting it reminds me of that day. The second would have to be a day in 1964 I would go between Rowfant and Grange road. I could then record all those details I think I am missing for my layout. With a digital camera and a tape measure of course. Keith -

"Things "Southern" For a Newcomer"
KeithHC replied to Typeapproval's topic in Southern Railway Group
The M7 and H class saw service on the central section in the last days of steam. Maunsell and Bulleid coaches could be seen through out the Southern area. A few Bulleid coaches even ended up as far away as Scotland. And of course the Southern parcels van could be seen anywhere in the country. Even the DEMUs could be seen far off Southern rails. With rail tours for the Hastings units ro Spalding and the famous Long thin drag over the Settle and Carlisle. Keith -
There’s a nellybosh of 944 over on the kit building thread. Keith

Another one to consider is Designspark Mechanical. The free version is a stand alone so does not need an internet connection to use once downloaded. Like you I did not start learning 3D until a couple of years ago(I am now 66). Start with a very simple project. For me it was just a standard trolley coin. Very simple to draw a circle then using a pull tool create the depth and away you go. For me the key was in a post on here that said it’s all down to squares and circles. As with any of the various programs there are numerous videos on line that will give you a good start. When I need to learn a new procedure I have DSM open on my laptop and watch the videos on my tablet at the same time. Best of luck but be aware sometimes this 3D can be come addictive. Keith

Getting back to household coal. I remember back in the early to mid sixties there was always a couple of coal wagons at my local station Salfords. This was before the aggregate yard and the fuel store for Gatwick. I never saw and other regular services there but presume there must have been a local goods service. There must have also been some wagon load traffic for the nearby Hall and Co. site as well. It’s hard to think that there must have been a pick-up service operating along the main Brighton line with as it was then an intensive electric service. It seamed to me at the time that there was a train about every 5 to 10 minutes passing through. Ah the days of BILs, LAVs, PULs, PANs and of course the BEL and the more modern stuff…… Keith

I would doubt it would be Lime. The Oxted Greystone and Lime works are just a few miles to the west and it would be eas to use horse wagons or lorries. The Oxted works where rail connected but it would have been a journey to get to Westerham. It would have either been via Tunbridge Wells or from Bricklayers Arms. Also pre grouping using two railway companies. Mind you if the price was right who knows. Keith

In an article on Rail Freight.com they state the conversion is using BRUTEs. However there are very few BRUTEs still around. It looks more like they are using supermarket cages. Also the locking system that is used in lorry trailers as well. Keith
