  1. First trip today from Newport to Swindon for our regional conference. 9 car set each way. Coach A towards London and G back towards Cardiff. So quiet one way and more noisy on the return. Seats as has been said are hard but overall impression is good. Passengers like the power points for computers etc. Our conference was held in Steam with Caerphilly Castle as the backdrop to lunch. Conference room had nameplates and signs on the walls. Recommended.
  2. Dropped into Derails today to pre order 6145. It was a hive of activity with the phone going constantly. Also ordered the Ruston version of the 48DS to act as distillery/bottling plant shutter. Will have to save for the next J36. Bachmann next week so will return if there is anything of interest.
  3. May have to purchase 6145 as I have the number plate from this loco. Also saw the real thing at Southall shed. Will speak to Derails tomorrow.
  4. Dropped into Derails today to be greeted by Little Dan saying that was quick!! We only just sent the E mail. Saw my J36 being tested and happily paid for what is a great looking loco. Work on the garage starts in January, so a small shunting layout based on the South Queensferry branch will get me back into building layouts etc. The Lightmoor Press book on Lost Lines of West Lothian plus the Iron Rails and Whisky Trails give lots of ideas. The branch had Royal Navy traffic as well as vans for the whisky bottling plant.
  5. A Manor please, as Hornby have the Grange tooling all ready. Years ago there was a Grange body kit that used the Manor chassis from Mainline. So it is possible.
  6. Popped into Derails today fora PECO track rubber but came out with two Hornby Cattle Wagons instead!! They are the BR versions of the SR wagon. Good chat with Little Dan.
  7. Dropped in today and had a chat with Little Dan. 560 Peckett on test. Came away with Hornby LNER Toad in BR grey, an Oxford Rail 6 wheel van and a Wills Chapel kit for the Welsh layout project. The new Hornby brake van is superb. It will be company for the J36 when it arrives.
  8. ROD ordered. Having read various articles in Steam Days, it would appear they worked freights from Carmarthen to various points west. Also another Coal Tank which maybe push pull fitted for local services. Banned from Tredegar by the Union in 1950 and sent to Abergavenny for what appears to be limited use.
  9. According to their advert in Steam World, Volume 2 of the Liveries of the Pre Grouping Railways will be the East of England and Scotland. The Chard Branch will now be issued in 2019, but good news for waiting for the Bala to Festiniog book as this appears to be issued before the end of 2018. Additional book is on the Colonel Stephens Railcars. Check their web site for updates.
  10. Purchased a copy at the Lydney Model Railway Show. Neil Parkhouse told me it took the author 20 years to produce the book. It is now on loan to my Mother In Law who’s father was a Colliery Manager/ Agent at 4 collieries, the last being Ynysarwed in the Vale of Neath.
  11. Another book for Warley should be The Chard Branch.

  14. The Melbourne Military Railway vol 1, Southwold Railway and Little Giant books available at the Lydney show today. 6 new books promised for Warley.
  15. An enjoyable show today, sorry no photos. Blowers Green and the Barry and Penarth O gauge layouts were superb. Had a long chat with Neil from Lightmoor Press and Little Dan from Derails.
  16. Ian Pope’s book is excellent. It is well worth seeking out as it is out of print. Some of the liveries lasted for only a few years in some instances, but there’s always Rule 1.
  17. Thanks for the heads up. Purchased the Bradford to Thornton book, as my great uncle lived in Clayton.
  18. Thanks to the heads up I purchased Stephen Leyland’s book from the East Lancashire Railway in Bury while SWMBO was on a course in Didsbury. The Metrolink tram system is very good and reasonable. Agreed the book is very good with lots of information as well as photos. Recommended. Malcolm
  19. Very sad news, his travels through Mid Wales and the former Cambrian lines were inspirational. Thanks for the photos and the articles. RIP
  20. Mine arrived yesterday from Hattons. Well packed, will have to wait until tomorrow to test it. Looks superb.
  21. My copies of these three books arrived yesterday. Ordered direct from Lightmoor as I am unable to get to the Dean Forest at present. Excellent publications and recommended.
  22. The books will be in the Lightmoor Press warehouse on 14th June according to their web site.
  23. Lightmoor Press have announced a revised edition of West Gloucestershire and Wye Valley Lines. There will also be a supplement volume for those who purchased the first issue. The supplement will be 48 pages and include all the new photos etc. that will be in the second edition. The supplement will cost £7.50. The second edition is priced @ £30.00.
  24. Sadly unable to attend as unable to drive following a fall in Vietnam. From previous visits, it is a good exhibition.
  25. Sad to see this project disappear from the forum. If I remember correctly, Duke 71000 was a member of the Farnham Club some years ago.
