  1. A lot of the inefficiency comes from having to convert linear reciprocating motion into rotary motion. For that reason if there was a future in steam, the turbine was probably the way forward
  2. Added to this, compressed air is very inefficient. Although it was a long time ago, I still remember being surprised when, at college, we did a test using an air compressor and an air motor to measure the efficiency of the system. If I remember right, the system came out ad less than 10 per cent efficient. A great deal of the energy put into the system ends up as heat.
  3. Sorry I was only going by some of the commentsI'd read on RMWeb, should have known better than to believe everything I read on the Internet
  4. We had a meeting yesterday with the surgeon who's going to do the op, the main purpose of which was for me to sign a consent form. He started off very positive, very confident about the op, confident he can remove all that needs to come out, pretty certain he can do it with through the manhole (keyhole surgery). He went on to say if he can't do it that way it will be a full open up job (tubeplate out), but I got the impression it will dent his pride if he has to do it that way. Then he started to talk about what could go wrong, which of course he had to before I could sign the form. The bit he joins up may leak, in which case I'll be back in quicker than you can say City of Truro. I may get spontaneous diahorea, when you have to go, you have to go! I may get a blood clot, quite likely I would have thought, as he's operating on a clot. Oh and there's a 2% chance I could die! Then he waved the form in front of me and asked if I was still happy to sign. I'm just glad I know Him Up There is going to be looking after me.
  5. Might have been cheaper to buy a suitable piece of wood and spend a few hours fitting it in the hole.
  6. Ok, as space and everything else is unlimited. The Cornish mainline from Saltash to Penzance, with all the junction stations, and scenic breaks between them. Also including the stations at the end of each branch, and possibly intermediate stations, again with scenic breaks. Big enough???
  7. Is there any link between the use of 321's with a highly explosive gas like hydrogen, and the fact that these numbers are often followed by the words, "Ignition, we have blast off".
  8. Sorry if this has already been discussed, (Yes I'm too lazy to scroll back thro 10 pages). As the HSTs are being shortened, what's happening to all the spare coaches!

    EBay madness

When I was thinking of selling on eBay, I was advised to buy a few items first, at least that gives you some feedback, admittedly only as a buyer, not a seller.

Perhaps it was a dummy, used for double-heading.
  11. Sounds like what we used to do as kids; an ear to the rail to hear if a train was coming, but eyes peeled in case we didn't hear it.
  12. You're beginning to sound like Captain Kernow.
  13. So in order to counteract our disappointment at the content of the announcement, we have to dissect the way it's presented. No wonder RMWebbers are seen as 'Suckers' by those outside the forum.

Probably the only thing that's rare about them is the price.
  15. Thanks for that Chris, very helpful.
  16. Another electrics thicko here.Came across this post through the forum search; I'm trying to get my head around wiring track sections, in a way that doesn't involve stopping the loco, and maintains the same speed, which this appears to do, although I guess there is a momentary loss of power when the switch is changed over. Am I correct in thinking that both switches must be changed at the same time otherwise both controllers will be powering the same section; or is it the case that the controller not being used to power the loco changing sections, must be turned off before throwing the switch. Edit to add: Am I right in thinking that for DP2 the solid lines should go to green/yellow and the broken lines to red/blue?
  17. Anyway cows will soon be redundant. Overheard a snippet on the radio recently about a technology which produces milk without cows.
  18. Well I've got a date for the op, 25th May (subject to bed availability which apparently isn't confirmed until just before you go to theatre). Its not as soon as I was first led to believe it would be, but at least its a date.
