Radio 3 is perfectly capable of playing some decent, proper classical music but why do they have to deviate so often into the realms of psuedo-arty intellectual guff? Each time I turn over from Classic FM, in despair at the inane, repetitive adverts, I find some pontificating person spouting some clap-trap or the strident and discordant tones of modern so-called 'music' (or else it's jazz - aaargh!).

You lot sound like many people did when Rock and Roll first invaded. Music evolves but it must be frustrating for you all as it has been been for many over the centuries. Just thank your lucky stars you don't live in North Korea or ArSefghanistan where you wouldn't be able to listen to any music other than shite propaganda.
Off to listen to ELO now.

I don't want to start an argument.
However, my musical tastes are rather more flexible than some people might think. In addition to old-school classical music, I've also got CDs of Scott Joplin - Glenn Miller - Eric Coates - Bob Marley - Madness - Dire Straits - plus others.
As for me referencing a comment by Karl Jenkins - that's right, I happen to like some of his music as well.
In other words, I certainly don't take the line of music becoming extinct some time around 1850.
For me, the most important bit about music is that it's got a recognizable tune (preferably one I happen to like). When it was composed is of less consequence to me.
Although I happen to like a lot of music from a couple of centuries back, it's also possible that any real garbage that might have been written then has (thankfully) had plenty of chance to be forgotten.
Unfortunately, this isn't yet true for some of the tuneless ***##!!*** that sometimes continues to pollute Radio 3 - the sort of muck that Howard Goodall (probably known for writing the themes used in "Blackadder" and "The Vicar of Dibley") politely suggested that no sane person in their right mind would choose to listen to.

Someone has just exploded what must have been £50 or more's worth of fireworks in about 30 seconds. Fireworks night = serious sense of humour failure here.

"The Home Office confirmed that the cartoon characters painted on the walls of the asylum centre were painted over on Tuesday following the order from Mr Jenrick."
There you go CK. My 'Virtue Signalling' has been confirmed.
Pity Mr Bacon finds 'Pal' patronising isn't it considering it's a term used widely in the North between blokes!
I'm outta here, but thanks CK for highlighting this obnoxious occurence.

@AY Mod It's a smaller jump than you might imagine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gartell_Light_Railway
You just have to have them buy a slightly larger loco, and then find a way to justify all of those standard gauge things.

Watching the covering of HM Queen's funeral, I noted one comment that the coffin of King George VI was conveyed from London to Windsor by train.
Just as well that was not planned for yesterday, then - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-62952485
I feel very sorry for those who's journeys were disrupted or even thwarted.

Morning Cap'n,
The train had to go to a specific line at Windsor in order to transfer the coffin. I'm not sure if what is on the other side of where the transfer would take pace would still be accessible and if there's room to re-lay the line in question. You also need somewhere to put the second train (yes, the plan involved two trains) and even back along that required some track to be laid to deal with them. Top & tail wouldn't be a problem at all but it's a matter of gaining access to the right part of the station and that might no longer be possible. the other problem is that the route available for the public to see the cortege would be very short (from either station) which would lead to crowd control problems. I suspect that rail to windsor was taken out of the plan a good while back?

Well, Radio 3 has been playing some half-decent classical music when I've been tuning in today, although the 1900 mix tape did get a bit avant-garde towards the end.
-
Only half decent?
As in the first half was decent - but as for the second half ... ?
I must admit - when it comes to Radio 3, the words "avant garde" fill me with dread.
As I've previously mentioned, I've got no problem with more modern music - as long as it's got a tune.
Unfortunately, for a number of years, some people connected with R3 appear to have had a fixation with "experimental music" - with the experiment seeming to consist of seeing if anyone can detect anything resembling a tune - if they can, the experiment has failed.
Some of them seem to have been intent on inflicting a pan full of "musique concrete" on long suffering listeners.
Not surprisingly, they miss the point. I only like one sort of concrete - the sort that's in an Art Deco building (especially if the building just happens to be Cardiff Central railway station).
Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be on offer. What is might possibly be of interest to Gillian McKeith (or, perhaps a proctologist) - it's unlikely to be of much interest to too many people round here.

When attempting to send a letter to an address in Germany yesterday, I now find that instead of an 'EU destination' stamp, I now have to put three separate stamps on the envelope, to the total value of £1.45. Of course, there is no £1.45 stamp. You need one for £1.42, then one for 2p and (incredibly, they still exist) one for 1p.
Is this some kind of Bre*it-related farce, I wonder?
