  1. Pleasantly surprised by price, dare I say that, as I have a feeling this gives Hornby and Bachmann Carte Blanche to increase their prices to similar levels! However this ones not for me. After the fuss and furore have died down, when are you going to run it? A very limited prototype, never actually entered passenger service which will take up siding space! So really it was never on my list , never mind on top of it. I wish Jason well , in the hope that more interesting prototypes will follow. But I'm also not wanting to open the door on paying deposits up front for future model purchases. Not for me but good luck guys. Why 2 power cars on such a short train?
  2. Well said that man! It is horses for courses and I can see the benefits of DCC but the old analogue way shouldn't be forgotten . One thing I note for DCC layouts is that locos seem to operate at lower speeds than on analogue , I don't know why. Then of course there is that embarrassing short where everything stops!
  3. Thanks for posting the videos. Good old Exhaust Steam Sound on the Scotsman! Going well considering their age
  4. Thats a proper Clan. Gorgeous in that livery!
  5. I think there is already one on the Highland, so it makes sense that others would follow.
  6. What a really nice thing to do. And everytime you look at it you will be reminded of your Dad. Yes , despite what people say, objects are more than just possesions . They remind you of who gave you them and the happy times you had. A great heart warming story.
  7. The only issue I have with this layout is that we don't see enough of it! Love the time period and mixture of liveries that are possible. Are there any videos of the layout anywhere?
  8. I know you've got tongue firmly in cheek but I think you'll find the Bachmann ones better ,with rolling eyes. Also Hornby are charging top Dollar for this for a model that dated from 1979, remodelled as Thomas in 1980s . Think of the return they've made on this one! Returning to the theme I'd vote the original super detailed Merchant Navy. It was the one the upped the standards in one go and reverted to motor in loco body. It predates some of the more fragile detail items and was a smooth and powerful performer right from the off. For me its the model where Hornby got the balance right.
  9. The Guiness Book of Rail Facts and Feats(1973) has a pic of Oliver Cromwell on a special at Carnforth in 1968 and its definitely a Mk2 brake in blue/grey next to the engine. I always though Mk2s behind a steam loco was a bit incongruous and was like something out a Hornby Catalogue but it did happen. I don't know what disturbs me more, the fact that it was 46 years ago or that when I first saw it in 1973 it would still have been recent history. God I feel old!
  10. Don't you just wish you had today's digital cameras and phones back in the 60s and 70s! Great set of photos. Like the 303 at Waverley. Never knew one handmade it to the Far East!
  11. Yes we'll done Bachmann for trying to sort out this issue and being open about it. However ,shock horror, believe it or not , not every model railway enthusiast reads RMweb , so my question is , have we seen anything in the mags? I'm sure that would be useful to people who are not web connected.
  12. Hoots moon it's time for something Scottish ye ken! That Caley 812 0-6-0 . Lovely wee engine as seen at Aviemore and the Severn Valley.Or how about Glen Douglas NBR 4-4-0 on display at Glasgow Riverside Museum, or...................it has to be a JONES goods. Also preserved at Glasgow Riverside museum the first 4-6-0 in the country!

    Hornby K1

As with all Hornby products, I'll wait ro see how this one turns out before committing. Its not an essential model to have for me, so I can afford to wait it out. If its not upto sprec or if it sells out , it won't be a disaster
  14. I take the point Tractor, but how official is official? The only place I've seen it is on RMweb and I think that was because Andy asked the question of Bachmann directly. I haven't seen it in any other forums or in any magazines, so have they, in fact, only communicated to RMweb? For me this was a nice to have, but I think on reflection I could do without the hassle. I'll wait till issues get sorted I'm surprised at the link to the Class 85. I've got one and it ran perfectly straight from the box, as indeed have most Bachmann locos , diesel steam and electric alike!

Yes , it's in this months Hornby Mag, which is just out 62015 BR black early emblem R3242 62024 BR black late crests R3243 and an alternate late crest loco 62027 R3243A
  16. I think Railroad has plastic wheels, main range metal. It might also be that the main range has more decoration like no smoking and 1st class stickers on window, but not certain. I'm assuming that all versions will have the white lining between blue and grey , but with Hornbys marketing mess who knows?
  17. Yep #525 that was certainly my intention. The truth of it is , you can't have it all ways. If the marginal cost of keeping the line from Newton Abbot through Totnes is low, then it may be possible to keep it open, but I doubt two full lines into Devon and Cornwall can be sustained. Yes I appreciate Totnes loses out , but then again Okehampton and Tavistock will gain. People from Totnes can connect at Newton Abbot by bus or car. The real problem is the issue of the sea and the railway at Dawlish will not go away. Yep might have survived 120 years but maybe it's time has come. Isn't this at least the second time in two years the jetstream has been too far south. If I remember correctly it was blamed for the bad summer of 2012 before the Olympics. Now we can ignore it and say it's just coincidence or we can reflect and build appropriately.
  18. What's wrong with reversing trains? Modern trains are multiple units , they can change direction in the duration of a normal station stop. Dawlish sea wall has always been an issue in bad weather. The reinstatement of the line there can be nothing but a temporary sticking plaster. It is not the long term cure. There needs to be a new route into Plymouth and Cornwall. To me reinstating a line that is already substantially there , the LSWR route makes perfect sense , and yes it will cost money, but that's what's needed to keep Plymouth and Cornwall connected to the network. Keep the Dawlish route for Paignton and Torquay , albeit with likely disruption from future weather, but route the Plymouth and Penzanze trains through the LSWR route
  19. Yep, because blue and grey belonged to the corporate image which also introduced the double arrows, no blue and grey coaches ever had a crest. Similarly except in preservation crimson and cream coaches didn't have roundels either
  20. What's to disagree with? The blue team have communicated on faults on 40 and are trying to rectify them. Heard anything from the Red team on rectifying models? 4Vep? 12 Spoke wheels on the star, apparently they will supply the correct 10 spoke but that was only heard through BRM I think, never an official announcement!
  21. Well at least there is an acknowledgement of issues and they are testing models where they have found issues. So while I agree it shouldn't have happened, at least Bachmann are communicating to resolve the issue. The red box team would be burying their head in the sand.
  22. Yes it could. I have a simulator that does Queen St to Edinburgh Waverley. I think Trainz has the ECML from Newcastle to KX I Like creating routes and then driving the. I sometimes use the track plans of model railway layouts I like and join them together in one big route.

    Bachmann E4

Well I've just signed up for an LB&SCR umber one. I missed out on the SE&CR lined out green C and suspect this will be just as popular. Looks good to me. Embarking on a pre grouping collection. The E4 joins my Lanky Tank. Now if I only had a Caley 812 0-6-0 or and NBR Glen.........

    Bachmann E4

Surely if it's not obvious they are molded then Bachmann have achieved their objective? Got my hat, heading for the hills
  25. Quite fancy a Dukedog in GWR green, but the only version is DCC. Anyone know if the model would be supplied with a blanking plug for those that don't want the chip?
