  1. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. It might not be as hot as the last couple of days but the humidity is making it feel worse. Not much evidence of rain here either. They were talking about manure heaps spontaneously combusting. The internal temperature of a manure heap can reach 140F/60C depending on what they contain. Apparently the fir tree that fell across the WCML bringing down the overhead also spontaneously combusted. I read somewhere that such trees which contain a lot of resin so when heated exude a flammable vapour which makes controlling fir tree forest fires so difficult. Perhaps the tree in question was giving of vapour and it was just waiting for something to ignite it.
  2. Dyson vacuum cleaners do suck, but not in the way expected of them.
  3. There is still planned obsolescence to contend with, and not always with the cheapest items.
  4. Sounds like a good place for a meet, ER's or NM's. I looked it up and its a short walk from from Holloway Road Station, first stop south of Finsbury Park.
  5. And us East Saxons say the same about Suffolk folk (Moonrakers) and they say the same about those from Norfolk (Bobs not only your uncle).
  6. Perhaps emergency vehicles should be equipped with a rear camera to catch the tailgaters. (The police almost always prosecute such drivers when they tailgate their vehicles.)
  7. The older a car gets its inevitable than many parts will have been replaced due to normal wear and tear or accident, or for that matter updated by the owner to a higher spec. Few cars over thirty years old are completely 100% original.
  8. This was the area affected by the fire yesterday. The terrace second left (Marine Terrace) was destroyed but remarkably the first semi-detached houses were only slightly damaged, possibly due to the swimming pool although the gardens were damaged/destroyed. In fact most of the gardens were destroyed together with the row of garages bottom right and the church on the right was badly damaged.
  9. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Last night when I went to bed it was quite pleasant. The heat of the day had gone and there was a cooling breeze which I captured by opening the fanlights in the hallway and bathroom. I went to sleep quite quickly but I awoke at gawd knows what o'clock and the breeze had gone and instead it was hot and muggy. Despite that I went to sleep again until just after five when the bladder required relief and then I found that the breeze had shut the bathroom door. I have wedged the bathroom door open and now the house is cooling down. There is still the smell of burnt wood on the breeze but not as much as last night. My thoughts go out to those in Wennington who have lost their homes.
  10. It has rained sporadically all evening but most of the rain evaporated making it very muggy.
  11. Its been so hot today the ice cream van melted.
  12. I had a 1980 Allegro 1300 estate. Outwardly a Mk II but the interior was all Mk. III.
  13. Evening all from Estuary-Land. My eyelid inspection this afternoon was rather prolonged and when I woke up it had become very muggy. Temperature both inside and out is 29C and according to the app its raining but if it is its a very dry rain. STOP PRESS it is now raining but instead of the usual 'fresh' smell as one would expect there is a smell of burnt wood. Several houses a few miles downwind of me at Wennington were destroyed or damaged by a grass fire that got out of control.
  14. Morning all from Estuary-Land. First of all happy birthday Baz and many more of them. Need to go out to Tess Coes to get a few things and before the heat gets up, 24C according to the app. Not helped by the only direct route being closed and temporary traffic lights at the bottom of my street, both in place until Friday.
  15. Evening all from Estuary-Land. The reason for the disparity between the temperatures given by the weather reports and what a car thermometer reads is that the weather report figure is the shade temperature which is less than the out in the open temperature by several degrees. I opened the bottle of Chimay that I was cooling in the fridge, and it was flat, it also tasted sour so I threw it away. I've got another two bottles chilling in the fridge, if they're the same I might have to order some fresh bottles. I'm running out of cold drinks so I might venture out early tomorrow to replenish supplies. I also have cavity wall insulation and the loft insulation is quite thick and it does seem to keep it a tad cooler upstairs.
  16. But the vehicles concerned were not subsidy scheme vehicles. They and many other vehicles were built to military specifications after war commenced and were never civilian vehicles until they were demobbed after the war.
  17. I wonder if the pilot was tempted to test his own ejector seat?🥵
  18. There were several Indian and Chinese restaurants in Romford in the 1960's and some of them were very good. One in particular just off of the High Street had a very good reputation, I went in there to be told all the tables were taken quite often. Sadly the premises they occupied were scheduled for and demolished about 1971 and they moved to Gidea Park. Apparently Indian restaurants have been part of British life for a very long time, since 1810. https://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/The-British-Curry/#:~:text=Excerpt from 'The Art of,Street near Portman Square%2C Mayfair.
  19. Hello again from Estuary-Land. Just had an early dinner, cold roast chicken and salad. The salad is getting a bit limp despite being stored properly in the fridge. Also the bread is getting a bit dry so I might pop out when its a bit cooler to get more supplies in, Tess Coes is open until midnight.
