OO Gauge SECR P Class 0-6-0T 

 


Although a small class of eight locomotives built in 1909 and 1910, the P class has often attracted attention due to their diversity of liveries through their long lives into British Railways service up to final withdrawal in 1961 with four of the class lasting into preservation. 


 

We have had the opportunity to look at the engineering samples in detail and look at the variety of parts from the tools which will give a range of options to accurately portray variations between locomotives through their life; tall and short cab/tanks lubricators on smokebox where appropriate, BR numberplate on smokebox where appropriate, two types of buffers, cab window guards, smokebox rivets (2 versions) and two different rear steam heat pipes.

 

We were also able to operate the running sample, adequately coping with a load of four Mark 1 coaches through pointwork and over 1 in 30 gradients. The model is well-weighted and exhibited very smooth slow-speed control. Some minor amendments have been noted and decorated samples of the model are due shortly.

 

Twelve different models will be available at initial release around the end of this year and into the New Year and will be priced at £99.00 – customers can pre-order models now at hattons.co.uk/pclass

So who is the manufacturer? 

 

The answer would appear to be Hattons, i.e. they're dealing directly with the Chinese(?) factory.  I believe this is what they've done for their recent Warwell wagons?

Been expecting an announcement at some point on P-Class been quite well known someone had looked at them, an seeing a certain company walk out with some drawings, but its a good call on the P-Class they will be very popular, only can afford one sadly. Looking at the model, certain parts do look like a Bachmann product... I could be completely wrong.

Exactly the same thought went through my mind. I'd say there is a simple explanation: when Kader wound up the former Sanda Kan facilities that must have released a lot of experienced people. We have had Jason Shron state that he has a former Bachmann employee in their shop, and the people to operate the several new contractors Hornby now use, had to gain their experience somewhere. As evidence, Hornby's mechanism constructions for their post Sanda Kan toolings typically incorporate features previously only seen in Bachmann's designs.

That's annoying, I was hoping for it to be something far away from the southern region so I didn't have to spend any more money this year... Not only that, but 3 SECR versions - which one to buy? Not quite sure this is what the government envisaged student loans being used for...

Taking their cue from Kernow,who have done just that with their Bulleid diesels.

 

Quite so, makes you wonder if the dividing line between manufacturer and commissioner is now so blurred that the RMWeb structure could do with a re-think?

Lovely. Late crest one instantly ordered! Hopefully a new small 0-6-0 chassis will lead to a new Terrier one day not to mention a whole host of other possibilities.

I decided NOT to look at the announcement during a work meeting and I'm glad I did or else I would have been leaping around shouting Eureka!

 

Of the 12, there are 8 which interest me however I have to be a good boy and keep expenses down. The 8 are:

All models corresponding to SECR numbers 323, 27, 178 and 753 (all preserved 4 members) plus anything in SECR colours (adds 754 on top).

 

I nominally want one each of each preserved member.

I'll drop the 2 industrialized versions. Which gives 6:

3 SECR

2 BR

1 Bluebell

 

That is an awful lot of expenditure in December/January but gives me:

323 in two disguises (BR/Bluebell)

27 in one (BR)

178 in one (SECR)

753 in one (SECR)

754 (SECR grey - non preserved).

 

Of course, we do not know what Hornby's "huge H" is going to be yet, which may throw a spanner in the works.

 

Hopefully delivery will stretch out to June. But all may Dapol/Hornby Terriers will have been replaced on the active loco roster (the remainder by USA tanks).
