Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! Clevedon - track building 4

All trackwork has been built and now the long process of painting sleepers and rail sides begins, before I can lay and ballast. Two and a half hours this afternoon has seen all the sleepers air brushed and one board's rails painted.   I had the local EM area group round on Thursday so I built mock ups of the sheds and water tower to help visualise what the finished article will look like.

Trains finally run!

Uncouted costs and grey hairs after beginning I finally ran my first fully digital train yesterday! Thanks to help from here I fitted the decoder myself, it was nerve wracking but worked in the end. I was slightly annoyed to find that my Lenz Compact only let me alter 7 CV's, even on the programme track. If anyone knows a way round this I would love to know as I was hoping to do some more tweaking to the CT chip I put in. I am going to be pretty busy this week as I have to get the Van ready fo

Front and Back plus a stock wish list!

Today I made some progress with the front and back sections of the baseboards. The back is bolted into place at the moment which will allow easier access to the electrics and for mounting the printed backscene when that is ready. I am starting to consider the fiddle yard/storage cassettes options now. I am currently thinking of having storage cassettes that are 2 feet in length. The second attempt to secure the gear wheel to the axle seems to have worked, as there is no slipping. I took each wheel off in turn, trimmed and adjusted the pickups, greased the bearings and replaced the wheels.     As I watched the loco go up and down the track the rear drivers were not turning, the 2 small rear wheels were lower than the rear drivers by a fraction so a small amount of fileing sorted this out. Down the station, in the morning...

Well with other projects on the workbench it's been a while since I posted any updates on the Rose Hill P4 project, my 2010 Challenge entry - well it's not going to be finished but things are progressing still, albeit very slowly. The Pacer is coming along but most effort has gone into 'finishing' (for now) the station building. A van to go with the 06 shunter

It's been a while but I,ve not been completely idle, the 06 is slowly being weathered but that's one of those jobs I have to be in the mood for otherwise I make a right hash of it! By way of diversion I've been building an etched brass kit for a Glyn Valley Tramway tar tank wagon, doing quite well but there are as far as I know there are no extant photographs of the beasties. So some educated guesswork is needed to complete the brake gear, more on this in due course.   To go with the 06 I've

Well I have given the gears 1 more go, I took the 2 wheels off and took the axle out, degreased all the parts including the chassis and motor bearings. Re-drilled the holes, then reassembled the parts. I dropped epoxy down the holes and rotated them hopefully dragging the epoxy down arround the axle. I will now give it a day to cure.   Had a few bits arrive in the post yesterday. I brought an old Eames Prairie loco some time ago. Someone decided to rebuild the chassis, well they got as far as

Figuring things out...

I've been busying myself painting figures of late to populate my layout. They are, so far, a mix of Slaters and Aiden Campbell figures painted with acrylics from the Tamiya and Games Workshop ranges.   A number of seated passengers have been fitted to my carriages, Aiden Campbell whitemetal ones in Festiniog semi-open 'Tourist Car' No.37 to ad weight, and slaters in the Talyllyn 3 compartment, as it has a whitemetal underframe and enough weight. Had to post this!   got the bodyshell back from de Selby today - he's fitted new flush running plate vertical faces complete with rivet details etc.   Absolutely stunning, I really need to make sure the rest of the loco is up to this standard now

Progress at last. The Con-rods are connected to the cross-slides and cranks so the little beast has had a preliminary run in "GWR" mode     As is usual with an OO loco that needs to negotiate tighter than protypical curves much of the crank end washers have had to be filed away to provide the necessary clearance behind the cross slides. As usual I had to resolder at least one following the filing down process.   It will have a quick oiling and proper running in tonight on the rollers b

lines on a shelf from a wardrobe new board tracks fitted and tested

As the title suggests since my last update I've wired up the 6 lines with doppers on the new board and I've connected them to the Bus wire and then connected it to the existing boards after having to order some new clasps as I couldn't find the ones I thought I had.   Anyway I am that pleased with the work so far that I did a short video and I thought I would share it with you.     Comments welcome as always

Bridging the gap(s)

Following on from the last update I thought i'd share a quite post showing how we've been dealing with board joints using copper sleepers and brass chairs.   The sleepers aren't cut yet as I need to get it all gauged properly beforehand to cut exactly on the correct diagonal. The rail is precut as that is cut perpendicular to the rail direction. When the sleepers are cut i'll solder some brass strip across the joint for now to retain gauge until the sleepers are epoxied down, normal stretches

Finally another update!

Progress has been a bit slow of late.   The 2-EPB is still in the paint shops. I had problems getting a good finish on the varnish, so it is being rubbed down and repainted in places. Much cursing and a vow never to use Humbrol Matt Varnish spray cans again. This particular model seems to be doomed to take much longer than it should do!   The 2-Bil is painted (bar a bit of touching up) and ready for final assembly, glazing etc. I'm quite pleased with it.     The 73/0 E6001 is progressin

Paxton Yard... and the grass grows!

I've been messing around with my new photo plank, testing out scenic techniques for my P4 layout, Meadow Lane.   I'm pretty happy with the undergrowth now, and it's just the track that needs a little weathering, and the edges of the board painting white.     I have built up the grass using a layering technique I read about in Model Rail Journal a while ago... basically down goes Woodland Scenics 'Scenic cement' on to which Woodland Scenics fine turn is sprinkled until saturated - I used '

Festival of Tramway Modelling.......

Last Saturday and Sunday saw 'Grime Street' at the Festival of Tramway modelling show in Manchester, this featured tram models from 3/4" scale down to 'N' gauge. Unfortunately I forgot to take any photos, the camera was stashed in my stock box all weekend. Viaducts

I collected the two viaduct kits that I ordered today. Upon opening the package I was surprised at how much smaller the Faller kit was to the Atlas one. Not only in height but also in terms of length. While it does offer more complicated features it is over 3 times the price of a similar sized Atlas kit. I was also disappointed that the promotional picture for the Faller Viaduct shows more than you get in the box and the description on the web sites selling these things is not very helpful (see
