Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Signal test... and logic problems

Today I decided to stick a Viessmann Hp0/Hp1 semaphore into Bad Horn, as although a German station of its size and traffic probably wouldn't have full signalling, I feel it adds something. Viessmann signals are simplicity in itself to install, simply drill a hole and follow the instruction sheet. No assembly or painting, just some wiring. They are even designed to isolate a section when at Hp0 (stop), although I won't use this. They run entirely off 16v AC supply, so straight off the accessory o

Finally finished the GWR Hybar

I'm quite pleased with how this turned out. It's a conversion of a Coopercraft kit to the fitted version, except that the one modelld seems to have lost it's vacuum fittings but kept the Bauxite livery. Based on a photo in "Pre-nationalisation freight stock on BR The wagon sheet cover's up a bit more of the new ironwork than I'd have liked. Never mind.

I Still Hate Point Motors

Having made some good progress with the scenery on the 'country' end board the scenic machine was ready to roll onto the middle (station) board. First I thought I'd sort out a couple of niggles whilst I could still flip the board over and lay it on its back.   I had changed the socket postition from on top of the boards behind the backscene to a more conventional under baseboard location, so I had to make up a new 25-way socket with longer wires to replace one of them and had to build a pair o

Shock to the system

The small shunting plank is firmly Transitional. It may use diesels (or an honourary diesel - Y3) but it's the sort of inner city goods depot you really can't justify existing after about 1970. Consequently the modest fleet of stock for it is very traditional indeed: no air brakes here. The ex LMS fish van is meant for it , and various circumstances resulted in me acquiring and building one of the new generation Parkside kits for the BR standard 12T van . Potentially very useful for the plank

Fame and the next step?

I've been keeping a project under my hat since Members Day this year where I picked up a model of 09006 from the Bachmann trade stand for a bargain price...   Over the following 8 weeks I transformed her into a model of 09007, complete with my trademark step modification and scratchbuilt hi-level brake pipes. I faded and weathered the bodywork and took step by step photos. After I approached Ben Jones at Model Rail, I wrote it all up for an article and today, I finally saw the fruit of my labo

It's alive! The Pacer moves on P4 track...

An exciting looking pair of parcels arrived this morning, just after I got home from town rather chuffed to find my article in Model Rail (see my other blog)...   A long thin tube and a big jiffy bag nicely labelled up from Exactoscale! My P4 track components (and gauges) plus some OO stuff to compare as well! Then I had to go out so I spent the whole day itching to read my article and put together a few trial sections of P4 track.   I finally managed it about 6pm this evening and after a q

coombe junction - Moorswater Viaduct

Update - Whilst I should be cracking on with Coombe Junction, I keep getting distracted to the Boxfile Kyle layout, however today, I decided to re-engage with Coombe and begin to think about the final board, number 3. This will feature an extract of the much photographed 150ft high Moorswater viaduct and also Moorswater china clay dries.   One thing that has always entrigued me about this branch is the scale comparison between Lamellion Bridge and Moorswater viaduct soaring behind in the dista

A beginning... at last!

Ok, so where to start? I've been messing about for ages, armchair modelling, building Parkside kits, modifying coaches, chipping locos etc. etc., but apart from a circle of track on the floor (for running in purposes you understand!) I've not had anywhere to actually run trains. It really was about time I did something about this. Time is limited due to work, chores, cycling, football... you get the idea, so instead of attempting to build one of the grand plans we all have I've finally decided

More on 37667

Having reached the limit of what I can do on Clan Line (at least until the con rods and tender chassis arrive), I've got on with finishing off 37667 'Meldon Quarry' in EWS.   The first job was finishing off the fitting of the sandite port. The etch isnt great, being far to overly simplified at the expense of detail, but I am getting somewhere from it... First the half etched centre was cut out and discarded, then a hole to match was cut into the locos body side. Given the thin brass frame att

2010 Challenge Idea

Hello Folks!   Well yes, 2 of us at he Fareham club decieded to through our hat into the 2010 Challenge.   So far, we've decided we'll be doing something N Gauge, on 3; 4ft*1ft boards. And so far, I've got as far as making up 2 of them, as the photos atached demonstrate B)

Lord Nelson's are multiplying...

Where once there was a sole Lord Nelson, now there are two... 30865 Sir John Hawkins has joined it's sister LN 30850 Lord Nelson on my workbench.   Currently being prepped for weathering (there's a bit of queue in the paintshop more on that later in the blog). I've drilled out the chimney and fitted most of the details. Here it is straight out of the box:     And as promised here's a picture of Lord Nelson taken under natural light:     My three kit built pieces of rolling stock are

Loco fleet and selected coaching stock

Why on earth am I posting photos of the loco fleet for the layout when it's a coaching stock depot?   Well I do appreciate the fact that most of the people on RMweb will be more interested in the locomotives used rather than the coaching stock. That said there is an interesting selection of trains that run on Kirkhill (well I think so) so I've also posted selected items of coaching stock as well. The locos don't really need much explanation but they are all based on photos from fotopic

Clan Line pt4

A slow morning spent waiting to hear back whether or not my car is fixable (having died on the way out last night.) Turns out that the Alternator has blown so now I'm stuck at home waiting for the RAC to come and fit a new one, most annoying as until they come and call I cant leave the house!   Still, its given a bit more time to work on Clan line.   The first job this morning was a couple of modifications to the front bogie, soldering on a washer to help correct its position. Looks like som

Box van update...

A bit of an update on the waggon today, end ribs, hinges, door handles and brake wheels have been added. Once the glue is dry I can get on with forming the roof, and then painting can begin.     Thanks for looking   J

Day 2 of Kates build

Hi All   So the next stage was to start with the sides, first step is to add the beading around the door way, I did this by starting at one side of the door and tacking with solder the beading around the door entrance, only once I had attached it all round did I cut the waste from the door entrance. The photo shows the beading still tacked across the door before I cut it off.   The beading is supplied etched on the back with a channel so to attach it after cleaning the etch with a wire brush

O gauge workbench

This is the motorail flat ( my 2nd of 3 to scratch build). I have tried to show the general construction with these pics. I have done most of the underframe detail except the brake levers. The only other thing i have to do is paint it ,then i can add the Motorail signs, chocs and of course CARS . also i 've got to fit the buckeye couplings as well.     These last two pics are the BG and as you can see it's not started yet. I hope to do a little work on this this weekend. This will be dril

O gauge workbench

Here are a few pics of the small amount of progress.     These are the Ian Kirk siphon G . I have plated over the planking and re-planked the doors and ends with vertical planking. As you can see there is still a long way to go but you get the general idea.     This is the Westdale GUV. The body is just about ready for primer. The underframe is also not far off complete. I think only the dynamo belt to solder on. The pics show it with underframe and bogies, however these ar

Clan Line - Front Bogie.

Been playing with the soldering iron today, and knocked up the comet kit for the front bogie.   other than a bit of fun trying to laminate the outer frame onto the sub frame all went quite well got a bit of solder to scrape off on one side where it made a bit of a mess, but other than that its gone together nicely. the next job will be weighting it up (planning on filling the underside of it with lead) and tidying up the mounting arm.   I am also thinking that I probably aught to add a sprin

O gauge workbench

I have done a little work on my second motorail flat and hopefully post some pics over the weekend . I will also post some pics of my syphon g so far. This i have had to alter as i made a big mistake in the purchase of it. Just concentrating on it being inside frame i forgot to look whether it was vertical or horizontal planking . Guess what i got the wrong one horizontal instead of vertical . After some research i found i could alter the doors and plate over the rest like W1325. This vehicle w

The Shed Goes Up...

This is an update I've been meaning to post for a while now, but couldn't find the relevant photographs to do it with!   I've been building a shed for 56C, being made from plasticard, Peco Roof kits, Scalescene scratch building aids and similar - in essence, it has been built in the same way as the carriage shed.   Here's a few photographs, taken at the end of August:               Since these pictures were taken, I've added a lot more details to it and weathered it - ful

On the Fiddle

So today I got the power - and other tools out and bashed some fiddle yard boards together. It aint pretty, but it just might work. It's dark outside now, so photos will have to wait until the next dry day - it could be some time. Next on my list is getting track in the fiddle yards, then turnout operation and wiring. I might be able to play trains - errrr I mean operate my railway - in the not too distant future.

Boxfile Kyle - Rolling stock...

Update - Received this week from Adam at Electra, a series of overlays, to enable the various different rakes of coaching stock for the layout.   From my research and photos of the prototype to date, I am preparing the following:   - MKI TSO, BG, MKI TSO in Blue grey Scotrail.   - MkII TSO, BG, MKII TSO in Blue grey Scotrail.   - MKI TSO, BG, MKII TSO in Blue grey Scotrail.   - 101 Observation car, MKIIa TSO, MKIIa BSO in Green + Cream Hebridean Heritage livery.   Probably too much f

    • Hi Keith,   Well done for persevering over the past few years with your ideas and above all keeping your dreams alive and I’m glad that my thread has kept you entertained along the way. The very best of luck with your upcoming house move and hopefully once settled in, the creative thinking processes will kick in, swiftly followed by some modelling magnificence.   Best regards, Mark
    • Taken a while to get here with this one as I decided to go full function lighting which meant a complete rewire of the chassis and the body. This has day, night, tails on both ends which can be also switched on and off on end at a time. I also added an EOT lamp.   Ready for decals and bogie paint:
    • Small has a number of advantages when you are plagued by the usual problems of space, time, funds, deciding on a prototype/layout style/theme.   You can build and get to a 'sufficiently complete' stage to scratch that particular itch fairly quickly and if you decide it isn't what you want - or you have taken it as far as you want to go - you can move on to something else.   I look forward to seeing what develops.
    • Hope it goes well: definitely an exhibition I’d be interested in if I was still in the area.  Many, many years ago now I did my School work experience placement at the Longbridge works - it was a very different world in those days, Keith.
    • I have tried to discover why the later vans may have had black solebars.   Looking carefully at the 51 L model I note that the W irons do not have crown plates or side washers on the legs. The excellent model by Airnimal of an earlier version does have them.    Perhaps I am totally wrong but a theory. If the later D9 lacked crown plates that would suggest a wagon with flitched frames.  If so it would be metalwork not woodwork and painted black.    My researches have
