Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Even More Pipework

More pipework, a part of a build that I actually really enjoy and always end up doing more detail than I intended at the start. So here's the steam pipes to injectors with the control valves made out of fine wire and some old electical insulation. Note new Hornby pipework below the cab.     I've also fitted the safety valves from the donor bodyshell and some nice Bachmann sprung buffers. The reverser rod is some mains wiring cable I found lying around that was the right diameter.     T

The story of Steinruecken

Although I started this blog to describe the evolution and construction of Bad Horn, my layout polyamory can mean that there are gaps in progress on any one project. As I'm just about decided that Bad Horn will be set circa 2000, and Steinr??cken is firmly set in that period, it makes sense to me to lump them into the same blog.   I hope to set the scene for you a little. The town of Steinrücken lies roughly central on the Baltic island of R??gen, approximately 8km south west of Bergen auf RÃ

DRS Chopper at Rannoch

Just thought I would share a photo of my new DRS 20307 done for me by Andi of Cairns road works fame! Mine was a bit different from the others Andi did at the same time being the old style DRS livery and a nice coating of grime to match 37 038 that he had done for me earlier. This is another brilliant conversion which really looks the part. Thanks Andi. I have added a few other shots to my layout topic. Hope you like it.     Thanks, Mark

Ballasting and Mail Terminal

Had a good few hours modelling this weekend, ballasted the diverging line so i can complete the bridge's both front and back, then made a start on the Mail terminal, I made a mock up last week and have been toying with all sorts of ideas of what to do, I was going to try and fit three roads in similar to Bristol but there's just not enough room for the pointwork (three way point in N would be a god send), So settled for the two lines instead. Also started to construct the actual terminal buildin

Class 201 Progress

I've now got some paint and "First Draft" vinyls on the 201 and she's starting to really look the part.   I've used Games Workshop Snot green (dark) and Scorpion green (Light) for the stripes and BR diesel roof grey for the bufferbeams and underframe. The silencer is currently gunmetal, tough far too clean and will be rusted down in due course.   The loco still needs glazing, varnishing and end pipes adding. The side vinyls are too light and will be tweaked for production.

Barrow Road Single Slip

I managed to finish cutting and positioning the ply sleepers for the single slip and turnout this afternoon. The last sleeper is on the guillotine ready for cutting to length it's position shown by the pencil in the foreground.     Part of my workbench also showing, in the top left, a variety of ply sleeper jigs for soldering up crossing vees.

Working over a tractor in a week, or maybe a bit more pt4, plus seacows

So, had a good session with the airbrush today, got a decent layer of brown on the underframe, and dustings on the bodyshell in the right places. It finally feels as though it is coming together now! Still need washes and powders on the underframe, but its moving in the right direction. Also gave some Seacows a dusting over with frame dirt at the same time, these had already had a series of brown and grey washes already. I've also glued on the detailing bits. Looks like they may, just, still

Missys Q1 Chop Shop....DONE!

Hello   Finally! I have decided to leave the Q1 alone and move onto the next thing there is only so much tweaking I can do on something before I get bored of it so I have decided its done.           Here is what I have done to it... Changed the engine wheels to 2mm FS using 2mmSA wheels using nickel silver replacement bar and plastic insulation bushes. Machined the tender wheels from N Gauge to 2mm FS and added the wheel detail Changed the plastic front steps to metal ones

Updates - 06/12/09

From Tuesday I will be adding photographs to each of the Episode Synopsis pages - the photographs being a mixture of stills, works in progress and behind the scenes action.   I'll also be adding a full index page for the episodes (including the shorts), and an index page for the planned Character Profiles - which will be going up in due course over the Christmas period.   I am also working on the BRWS fansite, and hoping to get an update done over Christmas, with Episodes 16 and 17 being add

Unitry - Bratchell / Jim S-W 455/9

I've finally managed to get all the bits I need to start this little project together, so I've made a start today - I've only had the kit since June...   Opening the box (well, bag really ) The parts are sealed in a series of bags, within one big bag. Each of the 4 cars is comprised of 2 ends, one roof, one floor and two sides. The instructions are pretty good - there is a part list for each car and a basic exploded diagram, but no numbers to identify the parts (some of which don;t a

slow progress

Not much has happened recently, like everyone else work and social life has got in the way.     The shell is now stiff enough for me to finalise the position, I have also now worked out the track positions.   I was hoping to be able to cut out the inspection pits today but have been distracted and it is too dark outside to cut them out.   Still I am now in a position to work on which ever part of the layout takes my fancy.   I can carry on with the shed building, with either continue

Green Vans

Thanks to the advise on this website I painted and weathered my Dapol BR (SR) CCT this afternoon.   I purchased the wagon from Trains4U earlier this year along with my Expo compressor. The mouldings are a bit 1970's to be honest with dreadfull W-Irons and springs etc. However the solebars were wide enough apart to fit a Bill Bedford sprung W-Iron between with only the minimum of filing. I was able to cut out the plastic leaving only the J hangers, spring and axlebox casting and then stick the

More track and a river

OK, have been having a couple of sessions over the past week or so, mainly track laying and cutting of the river!   Near enough all the track is now layed, just got 2 pieces to go, and then the wireing up of the layout can begin! all hte point controls will be probe and stud. The two inspection pits are also been cut and out and the pits put in place   ok here is the new river inspection pits and a general view of the last two boards

Making tracks over the weekend......

Looked at some finescale track and was impressed. However...........   Then looked at contents of my wallet and what I had leftover from previous projects and a compromise was required.   Seeing as I made the trackwork on 'Two Way Traffic' look quite realistic I have decided to go with Peco 75 and the ballasted underlay rather than the more expensive route of breaking new ground with C&L stuff.......another time maybe !       Anyway, soldered droppers onto 5 lengths, incased them

New London Bridge House

Here's a pic of the building model and how it will look from a ground floor perspective. Quite interesting, eh? The routemaster bus is an N gauge one for some comparison. Apologies for the poor quality pic but it's taken by kneeling on the floor and squinting in to the camera which was killing me and I forgot to set everything including the white balance, oh, and I've just got back from the pub.     And here is an equivalent pic of the real building;     Obviusly the model requir

Building Bridges

At one end of the layout are four tracks which enter the fiddle yard. The distance across them is quite large and somehow the entrance to the fiddle yard needs to be hidden so I began to build a bridge last night to span the four tracks.   After looking at a couple of scratchbuilt bridges on here, I found a few spare materials and knocked up something that looked like a girder plate bridge. The plate sides are made of 6mm Plywood, with plastic strip to represent the vertical struts and a coup

Cul Uisge - Kyle in 4 feet - Station Building 2

Progress is fairly slow on the station building - a lot of cutting little bits of plastic strip and painting.   The whole building has now had a coat of white primer which will be the base colour. I've started to add window and door surrounds using 80thou x 80thou L-shaped plastic and 60thou strip (of course I ran out of angle before I got finished )   I'm painting the lower wall and the surrounds with Railmatch BR Loco Green as this seems to be a good match to the colour the station was p

coombe junction - Backscene

Update - The question of a backscene was raised in the previous post and although I originally never intended to have one, I am now coming around to the idea. The idea has been tested further...   You may recall this 1:10 scale model previously made to test the compactness of the layout for transportation to and from its home in BCN...     This morning, I have added a backscene, to a height which I would feel comfortable with. I think any lower than the viaduct and it will look strange, s

Textured paper - Wooden hangar doors

Stubby47 said he is going to base his boat repair shed using doors similar to the hangar on Calshot. This made me think - 'Maybe I could put some more effort into them'. I had always thought they could be improved, and now was the chance to do so.   The texture was made from a stock image and then 'stained' to the right colour. It was then brightened in Paint.net and printed off at the correct size. If anyone wants the image send me a PM and i'll see what I can do.

    • Hi Keith,   Well done for persevering over the past few years with your ideas and above all keeping your dreams alive and I’m glad that my thread has kept you entertained along the way. The very best of luck with your upcoming house move and hopefully once settled in, the creative thinking processes will kick in, swiftly followed by some modelling magnificence.   Best regards, Mark
    • Taken a while to get here with this one as I decided to go full function lighting which meant a complete rewire of the chassis and the body. This has day, night, tails on both ends which can be also switched on and off on end at a time. I also added an EOT lamp.   Ready for decals and bogie paint:
    • Small has a number of advantages when you are plagued by the usual problems of space, time, funds, deciding on a prototype/layout style/theme.   You can build and get to a 'sufficiently complete' stage to scratch that particular itch fairly quickly and if you decide it isn't what you want - or you have taken it as far as you want to go - you can move on to something else.   I look forward to seeing what develops.
    • Hope it goes well: definitely an exhibition I’d be interested in if I was still in the area.  Many, many years ago now I did my School work experience placement at the Longbridge works - it was a very different world in those days, Keith.
    • I have tried to discover why the later vans may have had black solebars.   Looking carefully at the 51 L model I note that the W irons do not have crown plates or side washers on the legs. The excellent model by Airnimal of an earlier version does have them.    Perhaps I am totally wrong but a theory. If the later D9 lacked crown plates that would suggest a wagon with flitched frames.  If so it would be metalwork not woodwork and painted black.    My researches have
