Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Modelling development

I've made a start on the little modern signal control box at the west end of the through lines. I'm not totally happy at the way it's turning out - dut to my lack if modelling ability - but I'll see what the finished item looks like as there is still a lot to do;         I've also managed to get hold of one of those 1:150 scale KMB Daimler Fleetline buses (the old London Transport DMS) as recommended by Bernie Taylor and I'm very happy with it. It dismantles in to the consitituent parts

Taking the Fast Line to Widnes

A pleasant few hours was spent at the cabin yesterday, in the company of some guests ( = friends) from the Merseyside club.   We are frequently in the cabin so anyone is welcome, by prior arrangement just in case we are out and about.   After the guys had left I snapped a couple of photos of the REX Fastline 66/3s (and a car train which was passing, again taken with the cheap snappy so no real depth of field but still give the ideas for some interesting possible shots.   No details have be

Backscenes

I've made a firm decision regarding era and railway company. Circa 2000, DBAG. This allows me to run most of my existing stock with just a few decals applied, giving purpose to a lot of models which would otherwise just sit in their boxes.   After much googling for images to make a composite picture for a backscene, I actually found something very nice on CG Textures in the landscapes category. There's some seriously rich pickings on their site, and I have got almost all the signs I need from

They're Taking Shape!

The baseboards are taking shape, perhaps a little more slowly than I would have liked but a couple of stupid errors have slowed things down a bit, the biggest of which was briefly thinking I was modelling in 1mm:1ft!   I've started by concentrating on the areas which sit below track level, and especially on the area around the River Irwell. You can see an aerial show of the area as it is now on Google Maps.     View of the River Irwell as it flows under the lines just west of the station

Lighting up the population!

Well, getting there very slowly!   Quite a few lights added to the layout, along with some people. The figures are the Bachmann Scenecraft ones, not cheap at ??5 for 6 but very effective and excellent detail.   A few more station staff to fit, then onto populating the warehouse.     The picture below shows the Scalescenes Newspaper stand that came in the Hornby magazine, you can just make out the folded newspapers on the counter. I just glued a figure inside and added the light into t

More Shock open progress andsome finished stuff

The shock open progresses slowly. I cut down the ends, leaving some of the buffer beam behind to represent the floor. The body was then assembled around a floor made of planked plastic sheet, as the drawing in BR wagons (and photos of the full length non-shock version of the prototype) show a wooden floor. Finally, 40 plasticard was added underneath to represent the (quite thick) outside of the floor on these wagons. This was done in 3 sections to avoid having to cut out bits to clear the m

Station re-work

Hi everyone, Got more track and points today, so i have ajusted the station to how i want it to be, its not finished yet by any means, the shop was short of the point i need Apologies for one or two blurry pics:       Class 156 works its way over the new points:   And a bit of a scenic shot which i think looks quite good :   Im hoping to make a small terminus somewhere on the station, possibly coming off the outside line. Hopefully will get some more done tomorow Ch

Expo EM South

Back home after a cracking day at Portsmouth playing with Weston. Everything behaved itself and the layout performed well (in my opinion). Managed to acquire Christmas presents from Kevin Robertson as always, the rather splendid Lightmoor Press book on the Cheddar Valley and East Somerset railways. I've always thought there are some potential layouts in there, Congresbury with the junction for the Wrington Vale Light Railway, Sandford with its quarry connection and Cheddar with its overall roof.

2010 Challenge

I have now entered Claverton Engineering in the 2010 layout challenge, so progress will be covered in its thread there - http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/topic/3355-claverton-engineering/ . I will keep this blog going, but probably as more of an archive for future reference than for frequent updates.   Paul

Some colour to get rid of the primer look !

Tonight I had some time and have added colour to the main factory building, it still needs its orange growers signage ! I may be wrong but loosing the monotone grey primer look has brought it more to life.               Im getting a bit more confident that it will be ready for the January show now !   Comments welcome

Some progress with the U28

2009-11-28: Brief update added at end of this entry.   Since the last entry I've made some progress on the IKB U28 kit. The body is now complete and internal partitions have been added using 10 thou brass. I mentioned that I'd just started this kit, but I also have a separate chassis like the one in this kit that I built about a year ago. It has been languishing at the back of the bench since then because I was never happy with the suspension system. It has sprung internal hornblocks which I c

Minitrix / Dapol hybrid, creating a better Ivatt

Progress on my 40cm long, N gauge Victoria Bridge is going well. I hope to finish off tracing the basic shapes in Corel Draw tomorrow, and then to have a cardboard prototype (maybe cardboard will do for the final finished item?)taking shape before the week is out.   In the meantime, I have been looking at populating this single line layout with suitable N gauge stock to represent the SVR in recent years.   I bought a Dapol Ivatt tank engine to provide the chassis, pony trucks removed, for a

A little progress at last.

The last few days have been very fruitful indeed, birthday yesterday and some great gifts arrived, my lovely girlfriend got me a schenker 66 and a JGA, brother some more JGA's and my parents a 67 and a lot of track. This now means i can get on with the upper level, just finished building the right hand side incline and laying the track, also picked up some plasticard and paint to make a start on the Mail terminal. Still a little undecided about this section, I'm toying with running the overhead

More track

Ok, myself and swifty - was on old firum not sure if on here - have been laying some track, first of all, a cork base layer was taped to the boards and then the track taped on top...the track no longer moves and the tape isnt that thick!   well here is a pic of todays progress..

A first attempt with weathering powders...

Today's modelling has been focused on painting and weathering. I started off trying to get my A3's new wheelsets painted (with the intention of getting that re-wheeled once the Merchant Navy is finished). After painting the first coat of green, I realised that the wheels are missing the ballance weights, so are going to have to be painted again once I manage to find some. Must say I'm a little dissapointed that the wheels didnt come with any, wouldnt exactly have cost much more to put a small

Ex-communications building

Well after a good pub lunch, it was back to work on Calshot. Today saw the initial construction of the brick ex-communications building now being used as stores for the boat department. Made out of the Wills brick sheets (as with the engine shed) and a roof which is yet to be built out of corrugated iron from the same manufacturer. A drill was used to cut out holes for the windows and a Stanley knife to make it more square. It will need to have its mortar picked out using the same method as the

Buildings - Harbour Office - Stage 5

It's starting to come together now.   These shots were taken with out the extension fastened to the main building, hence the slightly wobbly look and the columns not looking exactly correct.   The main view from a similar perspective to the original prototype A seagull's eye view A close up of the office

Yamanouchi Oshika

Well, another night at the club (and a new potential member) and we have got lots done on the Japanese front. Ben has kindly cut a piece of MDF to provide a suitable base for the tramway. We also had a play with positioning the buidlings.   Enjoy   You're only supposed to blow the B lo ood y doors off!             Tonight further consideration was given to the proposal for a tram line on Yamanouchi Oshika.   Initially this was just on the new scenic board, although based

Yet another 47 - Continued

A little more looking at Class 47s today,   One of the plans I have been considering recently is to rebuild the majority of my Heljan class 47 fleet with Vi Trains bodies, while this does involve a lot of work, it does appear to be the most cost effective method given the very low value the Heljan locos currently have (both due to the release of better models, the fact all couplings have been removed, P4 Chassis and finally in some cases a lack of hand rails...   Now I havent yet been able

further diversions - a brake centenary

Having got a tad bored of drilling little holes in my 70 ft stock in order to attach grab handles I've put them to one side - I'm very easily distracted as well which doesn't help. I've done a bit more work on the BSL Centenary all third, it's has door hinges, handles and door handles fitted and the roof has been cut to size and the requisite vents added. Now needs masking for the blood to be added. The photo shows it next to an airfix composite to give an idea of the actual differences in the c

More 47768 progress and a new project

Some progress on 47768 today finally! The painted ends do make a difference, although I think theyll need redoing, how cruel close up photography is! The Heljan tanks to make a difference to this model after giving into temptation of using them, the next thing on my to do list is the lights and sorting out the frayed marker lights. New project in the form of 73118 in EPS livery which was a nice cheap bargin off Ebay! The current plan with the 73 is to model the Scharfenburg couplings, rewor

    • Hi Keith,   Well done for persevering over the past few years with your ideas and above all keeping your dreams alive and I’m glad that my thread has kept you entertained along the way. The very best of luck with your upcoming house move and hopefully once settled in, the creative thinking processes will kick in, swiftly followed by some modelling magnificence.   Best regards, Mark
    • Taken a while to get here with this one as I decided to go full function lighting which meant a complete rewire of the chassis and the body. This has day, night, tails on both ends which can be also switched on and off on end at a time. I also added an EOT lamp.   Ready for decals and bogie paint:
    • Small has a number of advantages when you are plagued by the usual problems of space, time, funds, deciding on a prototype/layout style/theme.   You can build and get to a 'sufficiently complete' stage to scratch that particular itch fairly quickly and if you decide it isn't what you want - or you have taken it as far as you want to go - you can move on to something else.   I look forward to seeing what develops.
    • Hope it goes well: definitely an exhibition I’d be interested in if I was still in the area.  Many, many years ago now I did my School work experience placement at the Longbridge works - it was a very different world in those days, Keith.
    • I have tried to discover why the later vans may have had black solebars.   Looking carefully at the 51 L model I note that the W irons do not have crown plates or side washers on the legs. The excellent model by Airnimal of an earlier version does have them.    Perhaps I am totally wrong but a theory. If the later D9 lacked crown plates that would suggest a wagon with flitched frames.  If so it would be metalwork not woodwork and painted black.    My researches have
