Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Blackgill: Tyne Dock to Consett in P4   by Arpster   original page on Old RMweb __________________________________________   ??? posted on Sat Aug 29, 2009 5:05 pm   Hello all,   I've been posting a few photos from my dad's layout in the 'How Realistic Are You Models' thread on the General forum and had a request for some more info about the layout. Blackgill is my dad's creation, started after the demise of Riddings Junction in the early Nineties, he set about creating a fictitious

Welcome to Wuerzburger Strasse

Last year I get a Fremo module from a friend from the FREMO regional group Frankfurt. He named it Luxemburger Strasse (Luxemburg Street), because he wanted to use these name for a future module I changed the name to Wuerzburger Strasse (Wuerzburg Street). Wuerzburger Strasse is an industrial estate. At the moment there are two companies. Deli Lux Konserven (Deli Lux Canned Food) and Lohr Press which produces fibre boards.         Markus

Callow Lane point rodding

This is what almost 100 bases for point rodding stools look like before they are cut out of plasticard:   And this is what they look like after they have been cut out!   Here is a two-rodding stool mounted on a base:   ....and with a 5p coin for size comparason:   This is the jig that I'm planning to use to space the rodding stools and their bases at the correct distance from the track (9mm) and from each other (24mm - for pre-Grouping round rodding):   Next up is to start dr

Scenic work, T9s and Terriers

I started some scenery soon afterwards. This was initially limited to some scatter material at the front around the passing loop. Nothing special, just Woodlands Scenics on wood glue. I had managed to get hold of a D&RG passenger coach at this point and this was soon weathered, simply by breaking up some coal dust and running into the wood plank detail, just like the real thing. It looked passable from a foot and I was happy!   I got round to ballasting the goods yard, this had to look

Harbour in a Crate - Polbraze

Excerpt from "A Guide to the Ports and Harbours of Cornwall - 1975"     Polbraze.     The town of Polbraze can be found on the coast, between Bude and Looe. The town's origins can be traced back to the time of King Arthur and Tintagel, although no connection has ever been found. In the 19th Century, Polbraze grew from a small fishing port to a minor harbour used for export of Cornish minerals. Today, Polbraze is a medium sized town with a thriving dockland area concentrating on boat r

Sleepers and things....

Last night was spent tweaking some models and then getting some sleepers fitted with chairs.... A mix of C&L chairs and Proto:87 sleepers... Pardon? Well these are 4mm scale full-size wooden sleepers.   Proto:87 track bits   The right dimensions, full depth and wooden - hmmmmm. Just the job once stained and painted for those low opens being used to carry sleepers and stuff; as well as being left in dead siding areas. More to do do tonight as well as getting those spring retainers on t

Er, this is a P4 test track right?

Well yes it is, just that due to working from the inside track out the first one onto the curve is the inner 00/P87 circuit. And we had to give something a powered run didn't we?         Captain Kernow update - 10/11/09   Of course, when the Traffic Department made their hasty request to run a train, the Electrical Engineering Department belatedly realised that none of the sections was electrically linked, so the Electrical Improvisation Committee was duely formed, with the single

Gresley Buffet Building

A quick detour from the Thompson to another bit of Ultima stuff. The sides, roof and ends are not a problem but the original aluminium floor is long deceased. Worse than that the price quotes I've got for a new die to extrude the stuff are not really viable with the Dapol Gresley stock on the market, nor would have space to store the typical "minimum order"   So to see what was needed and as a planning aide I cut a floor out of 1mm plasticard 117mm x 16mm to go with the roof and ends. Then I s

More valve gear stuff

A bit more done today.   I finished off the oil pot on the opposite side top slide bar, and then fitted one side of the motion as in the photo's. You can see the difference with the new union link, it's not perfectly profiled, but I was worried about it's strength had it been taken down any more.   People who had seen the working valve gear before now will have noticed that there was too much slop on the radius rod pin inside the expansion link, so the gear wasn't moving quite as it should,

Engine casing (flat)

Once again I am going to deviate slightly from the instructions. Why ask for instructions? I hear you cry out. Well sometimes the experience gained indicates there are more than one approach to constructing some parts and this is another example. You have seen with the cab that I prefer adding flat detail to etches while they are still on the fret, or at least flat on the table. I have found that it is easier to hold parts in place flat rather than vertical when they tend to slip out of alignme

Making Tracks...

Evening all, thought I better post an update on here! I've done a fair bit of work on the layout over the last couple of weeks in between job interviews (fingers crossed!), firstly I've removed the board that forms the short part of the L shaped baseboard, realised that in the end it just didn't look right, and removing it meant I could buy another bookcase to keep all my railway books and magazines on! So now the layout is just an 8'x2' rectangle, but its made life much easier in terms of layou

Wagon wheels

i have been unhappy with the back of the Slaters wheels as they are nothing like the real thing, so I chucked a pair of S7 wheels in the soft jaw and took 16 thou off the back of the wheel center.       I think it is an mprovementthey look more three dimensional. next thing is the axles......

Sniff, honk, cough, splutter

Title kinda gives it away really. I've been struck down with the dreaded lurgy for a couple of weeks now (pretty much since Cheltenham) and haven't been doing too much. In between bouts of coughing, sneezing and sleeping I have managed to make a little progress with the class 03, finishing off the idler and jackshaft assemblies. Tried it under power the other evening and all was well. I'm expecting a few problems when I finally add the rods though as I'm not convinced the wheels are totally circ

No.1 - Preparing for Drilling...

In my last update, I was test fitting the tender body. Thats now been stuck together, and once painted with a coat of black paint to show up where filling needs to be done with some milliput, hasn't scrubbed up too badly:       On the locomotive side, I've removed the raised printing and am preparing to drill out the driving wheel splasher. This was done using a cotton bud, some nail varnish remover and some wet'n'dry paper to smooth it down afterwards.     Getting there, bit by bit

In which Ravenser finally locates the "Create Blogs" page

Longer-standing members will remember the 2006/7 Layout Challenge which started on RMWeb2 before we broke it. This produced a number of rather fine layouts including Keyhaven. It also - mostly - produced Blacklade.   The basic remit of the Challenge was to produce a small layout providing a showcase for some of the high standard RTR we have enjoyed in recent years . LisaP4 defined the rules to require layout to have a maximum footprint of 6 square feet . That killed off an idea of mine

Wheal Tiny - guttering & a chimney

Actauully managed to do some real modelling this evening, rather than just thinking & planning.   The office on Wheal Tiny needed a chimney, and both this building and the winding house needed gutters and down pipes.       I also spotted an interloper...

Making a Start....

Well, just finding my feet in the new-look RM Web.   Hopefully some examples of my work in detailing and re-livery of modern stock might inspire some to take up the airbrush!   Here's a sample of what's recently left my work bench....           Full info on both can be found here,   37670   Colas       Stroudie

Partington Sidings - S7 from the armchair

Sometimes I wonder why I don't seem to achieve very much, other times it becomes painfully apparent!   There is the normal distraction - a quick bit of web surfing becomes a marathon research session into something or other, which transforms into You Tube surfing for class 37 thrash, which turns into, well, you get the idea. It's almost as if my subconscious doesn't really want to achieve anything relevant to what I'm supposed to be doing!   Where is all this leading? Well, one of my pe

Today at Paxton Road...

I took a trip down to Paxton Road today as I heard that an EWS 37/4 was on the MOD job - a rarity these days. Mid morning saw the feeder service from the hub at Didcot arrive behind a battered 37411 'Keith David Hilton'. I managed to grab a few snaps during my lunch break but had to head back to work so didn't see so much of local shunter 08543 shunting the depot. As I left 37411 was stabled in the layback siding and the place was deserted. I guess there isn't too much urgency about things on a

Changes. Now with added photo's !

About time too, I hear you say.   First up, we have the brewery kit. Yes, it is a big kit. Bought it many years ago because I had a plan for it. And now, all these, years later I have a use for it. The bridge is only resting in position, It will be level. And a loading bay between the main buildings. I will be putting floors into the building to give it some strength and so it doesn't look like an empty shell. I have yet to decide on a name for it, but I have a few in mind: Starkey, Knig

37667 Meldon Quarry

Think think this one was started on the old RMWeb, so a bit of a recap:   The aim is to produce an accurate model of 37667 in its condition from around 2004, starting with a Bachmann 37411 the work involves:   Phase 1: Fitting new buffers using Hornby parts Renumber to 667 and fit Shawplan nameplates Rebuild the headcode boxes with the correct type for the loco, add the brackets above the headcode box, add the large dent at one end and fill the hole from the old ETH socket. New Compressor House & Transformer

I wanted a small building to fill in some of the waste ground behind the low level station. I liked the idea of some sort of machine room for the station, so came up with the idea of a compressor room and transformer. London Underground points are mainly powered by compressed air. The big pipes running beside the track do not carry electricity as many people assume, but air for the points. Compressors and driers are situated at various sites around the network, often at junctions or close to sta
