Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Delph - things begin to move

Nothing very photogenic recently but some good progress has been made.   I decided to break off from the coal drops whilst I pondered the access steps from the lower to upper levels. In the mean time, all the droppers have been soldered to the rails and these have been connected together, as dictated by the wiring diagram & schedule, by means of under-board bus rails (bare copper wire supported on brass screws) which run roughly under the track position. Later the busses will be connected

The real slim Shady

Whilst not exactly a thrilling example, I thought I'd post a little about how I've made the cab sunshades, as it has useful applications beyond this simple example. In fact, I used the same technique when I made the operator cab for the 07-275 tamper that I've yet to finish.   I found a suitable picture of the sunshades on line, that would do for what I wanted with the minimum of manipulation. It is possible to correct perspective and rotate images within photoshop, or GIMP is a useful, free

N gauge GWR Carriages: How they were made

Hello All,   after Mikkel asked me about how the carriage sides were printed on the last blog, here is the 'story so far'....   To start with, the actual carriages (bearing in mind my layout is going for the 'modern image steam' look, modelled after the SVR over the last ten years or so) can be seen here:   With due astonished thanks to 'Sharpo' for his incredibly useful site: http://www.sharpos-world.co.uk/blog/?page_id=1025   '9055' http://www.sharpos-world.co.uk/blog/?page_id=116

This morning...

With help from middle little Bomp, I've laid most of the track and soldered some feeds and worked out where the buildings are going. I've taken some pictures but as before, I'll have to try to upload them somehow. If I fail here again, I'll stick them in Flickr or something.   I'm beginning to think that I may have made the access a bit short for getting lots of wagons into the loading areas, but that will have to have been a constraint of the site when they were laying the track. The build

Bruckless Junction

'Barrow Road' tells me I should be staring a blog on Bruckless Junction which I have been building for a friend. Basically it's a large circuit with 4 running lines, a motive power depot, carriage sidings, through fiddle yard/freight yard, station throat and container depot. Yup, pretty large, approx 150 yds track and 67 turnouts/slips. Track and wiring are now complete although I am thinking of putting more uncouplers in the carriage sidings. Control is by ZTC 511 which was purchased a couple o

Sturminster -derailment

Whilst playing trains this evening, I had a little bit of a mishap! I looked away from 5682 Trafalgar with 8 bogies Staniers in tow to attend to 46106 Gordon Highlander. Next thing I know there is a loud 'clunk' and when I look over Trafalgar is lying on its side. This is strange, I thought, nothing has ever come off in that area of track, a rather straight stretch about 200' from the Sturminster down platform. This is what I found!   I made some measurements of the beetle, it was a sca

Painting the Dean Goods

To complement yesterday's entry on painting the Buffalo, I thought I would add a couple of photos of the Dean Goods and 2500 gallon tender in their current state. Like the Buffalo, these will be finished in the colourful pre-1906 GWR livery, so the initial green coverage was done in the same session as the saddle tank. So far, only the green has been done and I intend to finish most of the black and indian red on the Buffalo before returning to complete this one.     The tender chassis has

Track Painting - makes a difference ?

If you have been following along you may have been looking at that awful palymobil plastic track and thought "RJR has lost his mind"   Well hopefully stage 1 of the track upgrade should be of interest.       I have been experimenting, I started off painting the whole lot with a chocolate brown rattle can. Then attempt 1 I picked out all the rail including their sides with silver (brushed) That looked too silver, took too long and I realised I would end up rusting or darkening the rail

J39 - Universal joints and drive

After thinking about this for sometime i had a rummage through the bits box and found an old Exactoscale 2:1 reduction box. I'd already thought that the 36:1 gearbox might be a bit low geared given the size of the wheels and DonW's comment on putting a spur gear drive to take the shaft to a more convenient height seemed sensible too.   The Exactoscale box took a bit of work to get back up a reasonable state, but fits nicely between the frames of the tender chassis. I've also modified the chass

O Gauge - Scatch Building

Evening all,   Started on scenery work today as can be told by the Buffers being installed on the layout. I also, have just finished this, a scatch built Platform. Its built of Cardboard and it designed to hold one wagon or van . Its the first I've done so I'd like to know what you guys think of it. Its not finished as I need to get hold of a load of Brick paper but It's structurely complete.       Until next time,   Jon

first period loco

Bought myself a Dapol slanty 45xx today. It seems ok, a bit jolty and very high gearing. the lubricant pump on it's managed to come out aswell. I've had it pulling a dummy coach from a 150 around, and it works well when pushing, well on one side of the loop when pulling, but not the other, and driving it backwards over a right hand point but not a left hand one will derail the back bogie when you've got it set to turn. what the devil's going on here? The motor seem ok, gears probably just ne

O Gauge - First Item of Rolling Stock/Start of Scenic Work

Evening all,   I finally got the parts I need to start work on the O Gauge Shelf layout. Mostly Scenic with a couple of Kits for the Rolling Stock. I've decided that it will be based in the 1930s on the GWR which makes my life easier as I can get hold of GWR kits more easily. I built one of the kits tonight and it went surprisingly well, aka it runs brilliantly. Also, I've managed to add three sets of buffers to the layout which required major surgery to the track to install them.   Here's s

Progress?

I was going to post some pictures, but for some reason I failed to upload them. I'll get Mrs Bomp to try for me later, but in the meantime I'm off downstairs to see how far I can get tonight.   What I've done so far is to clear the board and start playing with the track and buildings I can find to see what I can put where. It's all much easier to think through now I've got DCC and I don't have to worry about sections or whatever. I never had them previously, and only ever used siding and th

The Board Walk

6 Feb 2010 well that's a real mess ... no not the backscene cloudy blue sky effect ... just my photography Some weird lighting effect producing halos on the wood 'h' supports and a total loss of the blue tones.     but if you use your imagination it looks very much like this one in real daylight - just bigger.   I can see that I'm going to have real problems photography progress when it does start to happen. Such a big difference between my WB and the garage.     5 Feb 2010

making a better freightliner flat....

So... where to begin.. i've been active more in truck modelling than railway modelling for a while now but the tired feeling with that has set in because i get to play with very big trucks all day so the inspiration to model them isnt there.. and i always have an urge to "play" trains after visiting an exhibition..   after rooting round in the garage i turned up some old Hornby freightliners and acquired from somewhere a loooong time ago a mendip models freightliner "upgrade" set. all it con

Progress: Ivana the Ivatt, and N gauge 'toplights'...

Well, things are proceeding slowly, but reasonably succesfully, with the miniature N gauge Severn Valley diorama, at least in terms of poplutating it with stock:   Ivana after her 'Dapol Facelift', with a little more paint, numbers and a ham fisted attempt at subtle weathering:       Not bad considering her humble N gauge beginnings!     I am also quite pleased with my 'toplight carriages': a mixture of old Farish bits, windows and roof (on the third class carriage.. the one with

First blog entry!

Hello!   Well this is my first blog entry, so im going to tell you a bit about my Layout, Windward and where you can find more information about it!     Windward is the fictitious location for my Scottish 'OO' gauge layout. It has taken 7 years to get to its present look. It's a mixture of Industrial, residential and rural scenery, as I wanted to make the layout look 'busy'. The continuous double track layout incorporates a locomotive depot fuelling point, shops, houses and a station.

Class 150 Improvements pt2

Car problems have got in the way of getting to Stafford today so not been able to buy any regional railways blue paint, so wont be able to paint up the etches until I next see Brian to pick some up.   Next job will be working out how I am going to repower it, The choice at the moment being between one of Bill Bedford's underfloor chassis which is due later in the year, or a black beetle. The black beetle option would be an easier installation, however the lack of etched bogie spacers avai

Slow progress on painting, but I'm getting there

Nearly two months since the last post here, so time for an update, if only to show that there has been some progress.   With the chassis running quite well, I turned my attention to painting the body but, first, I needed to practice with my new air brush and compressor. After a week in which I experimented with paint/thinner ratios, air pressures, spraying distances and needle openings, as well as learning how to strip an clean the brush, I was ready to start on the buffalo.   Unfortunatel

How many of us feel like this..?

Morning all,   So, I'm blogging. Let's see how this turn out.   As the title suggest's, I'm on the plain of indecision. I get so many idea's that I feel swamped, then I decide on one, get to the point of starting something, then change my plans again. Permit me to elaborate..   I have "The Mall" in the pipeline for the 2010 Challenge..   "The Mall"   Now, this has kind of stalled due to a constant lack of funding and time. I may as well just admit defeat with the project and get it o
