  1. Hello all, I today attended a regional hospital for a Prostatectomy following cancer diagnosis at Christmas. I was second in line for the operation, and ready to be taken down, when my surgeon arrived to tell me that the operation had been cancelled. This was due to delays on the day, and staff being reallocated/retrained to serve on general wards to support general admissions. I was told that the operation is probably to be delayed until the Autumn, which - given the stage of my cancer - is still likely to be operable, but will inevitably impact the likelihood of a clear prognosis thereafter. I accept wholly that this is a result of the upturn in admissions due to Coronavirus and that I was particularly unfortunate to have been ‘bumped’ having gone through the whole pre-op procedure, however having experienced the hospital and staff today (and encountered other patients and their families) I would make the following plea. Please, please follow the government guidance and follow self isolation and/or social distancing relating to your age and vulnerability. The preparations being made on the wards are deadly serious, making way for multiple casualties in what will be harrowing environments. Staff are being retrained to cover general admissions and provide specialist care required of the current outbreak. Macmillan Nurses will be redeployed on general wards. The words ‘war-zone’ were mentioned by staff on multiple occasions whilst I was there today. THIS IS REAL. I overheard a couple discussing the recommendation that over 70’s would need to self isolate from the coming weekend with the words ‘they’ll never keep me locked up’. This is concerning, and whilst I fully understand that many 70 year olds are more spritely than myself (a mere 50 year old), such behaviour will lead to behavioural ‘contagion’ and wider disregard of guidance. Honestly you do not want this disease, or to be in any way a part of it’s spread. I know it will be hard but please stay in as guided, minimise direct contact with others and tough it out. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, there is an increasingly active support network for the isolated and vulnerable. This forum can offer a strong part of this for us hobbyists. For my part, I now have to wait and see what the health service can provide later in the year. For the time being I remain far more concerned over this outbreak and it’s wider impact, than my own cancer outcome. I am sorry if these words are alarming - I have not taken writing this post lightly. At this time there remain inconsistencies with policy which are difficult to understand, however please do what is within your control and together we can beat this thing. I remain grateful to my specialist surgeon who has been honest and frank with me today, I wanted to share this with you. Best Wishes, Neal

  2. However I've just fallen out with myself. Seriously. Not going to be talking to me again for some time.

  3. I have been booked in to get a PSA check in June, should this show a deterioration this may elevate my priority, but for the time being cancer surgery is to be focussed upon immediate life saving. I accept that, and hope that things will be better soon. It is hard to argue with a surgeon when you are both in tears. N

  7. In a similar vein I've decided to split up and go my seperate ways due to musical differences, both of my solo albums will be released in the near future to little if any critical acclaim, ending up in the seconds bin at Walmart. The roads are definitely much quieter round here but some semblance of normal life still prevails, there's plenty of jogging and dog walking happening, the 'mad Irish woman with a big hairy dog' and the 'octagenarian old dear in pink lycra' are still showing what they're made of...!

  8. Developments have occurred since the last visit. That Mophead* at No.10 has now decreed that, because certain staff will no longer be required after Friday, my sister finds herself out of work after 24 years in post, much of it on a zero-hours contract (though she has actually had permanent full-time work in term-time for years) and three years from retirement. Several friends will also be affected in differing ways. Some because they have had two days notice that they are going to have to care for their children at home and will therefore be unable to work. Of course they are livid. Two are living very close to the line as it is and cannot afford to lose income. Benefits do not cover the full amount and cannot be claimed quickly enough to feed the family within the week. I also learned - via inappropriate means but credible sources within the industry - that I too may be stood down summarily after work on Friday. The drop in traffic means a reduced staffing level must apply and peak-hour part-timers are no longer required. I may learn more in the morning. * Other opinions may be available.

  9. Evening all. Trusting that ERs are as well as can be expected. I haven't found time to read much of the past few day's worth of posts. Life continues reasonably normally Upon the Hill of Strawberries. The House of Fun was noticeably quieter today but with a relaxed atmosphere. Not that it really matters but current traffic levels will do wonders for punctuality statistics and there have been fewer (but some significantly larger) equipment failures. The thesis is now fully written and SWMBO is cross-checking all her references before submitting it on Friday. For my part the supermarket run was carried out and Waitrose was a little emptier than it has been - of both people and stock. Most shelves were full but those which were not were totally empty. Staff were busily refilling some as fast as they could. There is clearly supply in the chain and it is getting out as fast as it can to balance the sudden shift in the buying patters of some folk. We re now re-stocked for 5-6 days ahead; with a delivery booked for the 29th (the earliest we could get) though no certainty as to how much of that will actually turn up we are still in a good position. A food parcel was even made up for a friend in Cornwall who has let it be known that she was unable to find dry pasta, rice and several other everyday items. Two packs each of rice, pasta and bikkies are on their way which shouldn't harm the local supply unduly. She mentioned tinned tomatoes, baked beans and fresh meat as well but those are rather heavy to post and might not arrive too fresh either! The corner shop in the village continues to have stock of items the supermarkets are selling out of very quickly. Including longlife milk and non-dairy alternatives, flour, rice, pasta, sliced bread and toilet rolls. It appears I am required to attend the kitchen if I require dinner. I shall see you good people later. Stay well.

  12. I haven't been able to find any pasta, tinned tomatoes or loo roll at any of my local shops but got a tip off yesterday that one of them expects to have all three available at opening time today. My ever kind and thoughtful wife decided it was a job for me while she would sleep in and avoid the crowd!

  14. Ey up! Very early riser..woken by some beautiful singing from the blackbird..from the telephone wire by our bedroom window. I wo der if the ex members of the Queens Royal Irish Hussars celebrated Padddys Day yesterday.."from dawn to dusk and dusk till dawn" and its not just about staying awake! Bushmillw cuasers... not for me! We have closed the railway club as it makes sense...well Doris and co don't want the responsibility of doing a Macron. Her indoors is off to get her car MoTd..early start for her anyway. John (CB) ..looks good.. glad to hear the house changes are proceeding. Should you be turning an extension into a proper library with leather armchairs and reading stands? Some friends have just arrived back from Oz/Singapore. They too were very unimpressed with Manchester Airport smelly and surly employees) They were told to self isolate by reading the notices at immigration, but got the train home as there was no other way of doing so. Logic?? Now get off on the right foot by planning your day. Write a list of things to do..then chuck it in the bin and just make sure you get the best from every minute of the day. Baz

  15. As it was a beautiful day yesterday I did go skiing but I played it safe and didn't go into the ski lodge. Some snow became slightly yellow. Speaking of which I had to take another water sample to the lab for testing. It was another brill day and MrsID was getting a touch of cabin fever so we drove into town in the wee car with the roof down. It was only about 50F but MrsID was quite surprised at how effective the heater is. Not quite as "al fresco" as one of Neil's bikes but quite entertaining all the same.

  16. Good evening everyone Well, I’ve also come to the conclusion that the world has gone f**king mad! I’ve never seen so many shelves in Sainsbury’s empty before, no milk, no pasta or pasta sauce, no flour, very little in the tinned food stuff, but there was some bread, but not a lot. Thankfully (apart from milk) we didn’t need any of the stuff that had disappeared. But ironically there was plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables! Antisocial media (and the media in general) has got a hell of a lot to answer for! The amount of people walking about with JUST a pack of bog rolls and nothing else was unbelievable, talk about behaving like sheep, I did look around to see if there were any sheep dogs herding them all towards the car park, but there wasn’t! When you regularly shop in the same place and same time every week, you get to recognise some of the regulars, but today there was a lot of people who I didn’t recognise. I suspect they don’t live in the local area as they didn’t seem to know where anything was. They all appeared to be looking out for No 1 and seemed to be there just to scoop up what they could get, with the f**k you attitude. Then to top it all off, I went to the pharmacy to collect my prescription and the f**king surgery hasn’t sent my prescription to the pharmacy, so they couldn’t dispense my medication, this is despite me putting in the request last week! So that means I’ll have to go out to the pharmacy again before the weekend! After we’d done the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix, it was home, put the shopping away, grab a quick brew and then off to completed the Waitrose Grand Prix too! This is something that Sheila has wanted to do for a while, but has kept putting it off. Importantly, we managed to get milk from there, (they had plenty) so we now have enough to last us until next week when no doubt I’ll have to do it all again. However, I did have to keep reminding Sheila that we don’t need to panic buy like all the other ‘sheep’ We heard today that Ava’s school trip, which she should have been going on this morning has been cancelled. A wee bit eleventh hour, but not wholly unexpected. We’re expecting that Evie and Max’s trip next month will also be cancelled at some point in the future. After dinner, which was a little later than usual, I decided that it wasn’t worth doing anything outside, so I sat at the dining room table and played with all the circuit boards I’ve been building recently. They’d all been tested individually and some of even in pairs, but not all together. So with lots of bits of wire and some temporary connections I connected all the components together. Everything was checked and double checked and then power was applied, the first half (point operation) worked fine, but the second half (point position indication) didn’t! So after a few more checks and tests, I disconnected the micro switch on the solenoid and the problem was resolved, resulting in me having a grin like a Cheshire Cat! So the system finally worked as I’d designed/hoped it would, the point operates by a single changeover switch and the position indication follows the actual point position. I even managed to simulate a faulty solenoid successfully by holding the point as I operated it, so that the point didn’t move, the indication continued to the show point as it was and not how the switch was indicating. So all my scribblings and redesigning wasn’t all in vain. Goodnight all

  17. So I phoned my local hospital and asked if my bowel screening appointment was cancelled in light of the pressure on the service. Nope, apparently not. So with a national shortage of bog roll the NHS is still planning on sending me an enema in the post and asking me to report to a hospital that has apparently been set up exclusively to treat virus victims. What could possibly go wrong.

  18. I doubt that they will be after me to go back considering they removed me for whistleblowing. I am also signed off as being mad, with the certificate to prove it. I worked in A&E and Medical Admission wards so might be of some use but was never trained to operate a vent. I could cannulate, take blood, do ECGs, IV drugs (including diamorphine) amongst other things but I am well out of practice now. I could verify but not certify. My NMC registration lapsed about 7 years ago because of lack of practice hours following the collapse of my mental health. To go back ordinarily would require a 6 month Return to Nursing course. Would you be happy being looked after by a nurse who hasn't practised for 7 years and is not up to date? I don’t think at the moment they would want me as I am brewing a chest infection -just as I always do at this time of year. But seriously keep safe everyone and keep your mind busy. There is a good community in here so no need to get isolated socially. It may not be face to face but it is reassuring and comforting to know that there are other people in the same situation who understand what we are going through and are looking out for you. Friendship doesn't need to be face to face to be valued.

  19. Last couple of days my 10 year old grandson has been with me to try and keep him out of harms ways....unfortunately he is on the top of the Government's At Risk list. Now I have got Little Muddle running the best it has ever run he has had the time of his life alternating between play trains and watching the strangest program I have ever seen called The Amazing World of Gumball. He has just left with his Dad and informed me he had switched everything off and parked the trains safely...... Intrigued to see what that meant I have taken this picture of his idea of running a safe railway......until tomorrow when he returns!! The Station Master is pulling his hair out, he only popped out for a cup of tea and came back to this...... What is pleasing to me is that everything arrived in this positions under there own steam, so to speak.

  21. Greetings all from Sidcup and day 2 of WFH. The boss has now set up daily Teams calls, and i have also had several other calls - in fact I am being interrupted as much as normal, albeit that two interruptions were loads finishing in the washing m/c! I was also dispatched up the road to buy sausages for Friday's tea; our order normally comes on Friday but we could only get a Saturday slot. The shops were generally quite full of people, but less full of pasta, tinned tomatoes, rice, bog rolls, and bread rolls (apart from the freshly baked ones). Meanwhile school carries on although Elder Lurker's geography teacher is pregnant and so has socially distanced herself from work, so he was home around half eleven. I wish I could confirm he is revising hard for his A levels but he isn't! As I type, the sun has come out. which makes a pleasant change.

  23. Morning all. Not sunny today. I have a routine dental appointment later this morning (2.30 wasn’t available) . I think our doorbell got more use In a few minutes this morning than it usually does. First the postman with a parcel, then a neighbour who was off to work and wondered if we needed anything, and then another neighbour who had just returned from a fortnight in St Lucia. She wanted her garage keys we had been looking after to go and collect her cat. Cat wasn’t in the garage but their vehicle was. After Richard (HH) revealed the news about Brownie meetings I asked SiL Emma if she knew that tiny niece1’s Brownies wouldn’t happen last night. She did as Brown Owl had immediately emailed them and is preparing online activities. I saw a newspaper article where one Brown Owl was doing something craft based using toilet roll tubes which I think is quite topical. Tony

  25. So, after my post and questions last night things have moved on somewhat today. I called NHS111 this morning for advice and was told I should carry on as normal but avoid any public spaces!?! Useless altogether. Since that other events have taken over. My 14 year old daughter developed a cough, which initially sounded like the one she sometimes has with her asthma (a sufferer like her dad), but became dryer and more persistant and her temperature rose and stayed high. This prompted a call to the out of hours doctor service, a 3 hour wait for a return call and a lenghthy conversation witha nurse, who, as well as discussing my daughters symptoms, was concerned that I sounded a bit wheezy. The upshot is my daughter's symptoms all point to Covid-19 and the house is now in isolation for 14 days. I have also been instructed to contact my own GP tomorrow to discuss whether I should isolate further as my age, asthma, previous chest infections and arthritis mean I am borderline vunerable.

  28. HUMP day already. Client on Long Island have gone into WFH mode where possible. The entirety of the non-medical staff (remember it's a HOSPITAL!! ) work out of the location I frequent and they're all attempting to use the VPN now! Seems to be fairly "OK" for now, but of course all phone contact is essentially non-existent as I only have their work/office phone number. They can call me and I'm having to build a list of home/cell phone number for them <sigh>. Some report changes (SURPRISE!!!) requested, somewhat urgent apparently Nothing else happened yesterday save a walk around the local park with Whitney. Jemma got back early as the last flight she was supposed to do was cancelled and she was dead-headed home rather than ending up at JFK. Since she's been to various places and in partly crowded airports we exchanged Whitney and her belonging behind a door for separation and didn't therefore find much out about her trip. She's needing to shop for herself today, having been gone for 5 days, and will also pick up a few things for us to replenish stocks. We'll see how she finds the stores. Her cell phone also broke yesterday so she has the additional task of having to go to the store and get it replaced. Oh well. Tonight we've decided to get a take-out and a few other times this week probably. Many restaurants are providing take-out/kerbside pickup since they've been shut down for the remainder of the month for on premise eating and given we've already heard of some friends kids who work in the restaurant/hospitality biz being laid off, we're going to try and support the local small business restaurants best we can. 2 and overcast here, supposed to get some drizzle later and a high of 8 perhaps. Carpe diem.

I could have walked back from Screwfix after photoing the trains with the axe but thought it a is bit less alarming doing that in the car!!

The big bookstore chain has just announced that they're closing for the duration. I thought they were an essential service. One of the nearby universities last year had a St Patrick's day street party with 33,000 people and an overwhelming number of them carted off to hospital. This year there was a police presence (and possibly something else) and the street was deserted. (Parties have been expanding for years.)

  35. A'noon all, Late here today because I've been doing other stuff. I suggested to The Boss that we should self isolate but she won't leave the bl##dy house! Seriously though we have decided we will not go out unless absolutely necessary. Various visitors today including postie and couriers with parcels and next door neighbour's daughter who was going shopping and very kindly asked if we were OK for everything. We are and are hopefully getting our main weekly shop delivered tomorrow as I managed to book one of the last online slots last week. I seriously doubt if we'll get everything requested as they fill these orders from the shop where the shelves are rather depleted but they are refilled overnight. They pick the deliveries between 4.00am and 8.00am and the shop doesn't open until 7.00 so we might have half a chance. I won't hold my breath though. The first hour of opening tomorrow is reserved for the over 70s etc. Be interesting to hear how that works but I won't be going. Got an email from Sainsbury's this morning saying that in the next few days they'll be contacting over 70s and vulnerable people to give them priority in online ordering. That will be rather handy. My lawn doesn't need cutting but I may hoover it tomorrow. Been introduced to "Facetime" by Steve so at least will be able to keep in touch with him and also Nicki and the kids. Have a good one, Bob. PS Had a email from Carly at Warners advising that Ally Pally has been rearranged for August and my free ticket can be transferred. Let's hope things are well on the mend by then.

  37. Comments. 18 rolls isn’t a lot. We often buy when there are offers. We probably have less than usual of stored items due as I said earlier to too many medical appointments. I don’t think I have ever paid full price for dishwasher tablets. Aditi thought the bath photo was staged as surely no one would allow their children to produce a potential drowning situation unobserved. Speaking to yourself “one way of being guaranteed an intelligent conversation” as I mentioned to colleagues occasionally. Do any ERs think they are likely to be be conscripted? Someone mentioned about older recalled doctors. One of the things they could be doing apparently is countersigning death certificates(Cremation requires two signatures ) releasing more currently qualified doctors from the admin task. Aditi’s brother in law GP could have retired a year ago. Aditi asked her sister if he regretted not doing so. “Every morning now”. Tony

The village bread machine is still being stocked which is good. Today we need to go to The Danglies as Beth has a hospital appointment so the travel forms have been filled out. We also hope to visit a supermarket for a few items. Apart from that life is pretty much as normal. The last of the current batch of holes are now square and the ironwork is now in primer. 44. Someone with sufficient training to do minor tasks could free up others to deal with the larger ones. Sister in law (an experienced A&E and ex RAF aeromedical nurse) was on Red section at RGH Newport on Monday night then Paediatrics last night. She hasn’t been asked to do extra shifts yet. It is unlikely she will venture too far from home now, certainly not to North York’s to see grandson nor to Herts to see her sister. We need to shop as milk, fresh veg and fruit are all down to a day or so’s supply. I suspect that will be at Waitrose in Hitchin but the lemmings round here are as herd-like as elsewhere. I went to a mill shop I use quite frequently as my cupboard had only one bag of bread flour. Waiting patiently in the queue, the woman at the front was explaining how she needed four sacks of porridge oats as “she could live on porridge and she needed some for her sister in law”. In the face of a clearly aggressive and selfish woman, one can’t expect the shop assistant to do anything but serve the selfish bitch! And so to chauffeur, then some couping of grasse before a little unmentionable and or some photo editing. Be careful, be good and don’t seize up.

  45. More on the emerging toilet paper economy. A taqueria in LA, forced to close their dining room, is offering large "emergency taco kits" to go (including five pounds of chicken and five pounds of carne asada). Helpfully they are also including four rolls of toilet paper with the order, which, when you think of it, would come in handy with tacos. For some reason they are also including 30 eggs. Perhaps more take out food orders should include toilet paper with which, "to go".

  46. Mooring Awl Inner Temple Hare, 991/620 Not a bad nights sleep if a bit short, 6.0 hours.. Ben decided to go on patrol this morning had found plenty of pheasants and pigeons to chase. The early morning raid of Tesco was successful in that I got 2 loaves of bread and two Bags of porridge, the car park was 3/4 full at 06:15!! There was a notice on the door they will be closing from 22:00 to 06:00 from today to allow for shelf stacking, I'm guessing the suppliers are getting their acts together and more stock will be arriving, so all the till staff will be needed for stacking. The problem for the supermarkets is the moment all the shelves are full, the panic will stop and they will be getting too much stock in... Everyone has their own keys to our MRC, so you can come and go as you please , although Tuesday and Friday Evenings plus all day Thursday are the main events. I suspect that it will continue as is under " on your head be it".. SWMBO has ordered I get anything from the big orange shed I may need, in case we have to isolate.. I may get the corona virus but that is not going to be allowed to stop work orders at home!! One major system was completed yesterday, I will inspect the cross check results shortly, that will be followed by starting on the next one... Time to... check the company spam, which no doubt will be all about..... Oh and to send my new daily email to the engineering boss,.., choose from.. On-site, WFH, Sick.

This despite having the named pharmacy at the top. Someone had ‘ticked the wrong box’ I was told. Apparently this is not an unknown occurrence so it might be worth checking with your GP’s reception.

  48. Evening all - I hope everyone here is virus free. Today has seen the interesting developments regarding the government's "plans" to support business etc through the current crisis. I remain open minded but sceptical about the methods and it remains to be seen how helpful they prove to be. So to today - I did open on the planned reduced opening hours. Matlock Bath was as quiet as I expected it to be, but the irony was that I actually ended up with a total number of visitors, sales and takings that is similar to a regular out of season day. At home there was a much clearer indication of the current impact of the virus. We have been doing our weekly food shopping online for several years now. Today's arrived with 11 items unavailable. These included toilet paper, kitchen roll, cleaning wipes, vegetarian steaks, cat food and beer! Thankfully I was able to pop into another supermarket and secure the two essential items from that list (I leave you all to decide which two items they were!!!) Tomorrow is a day off from the shop anyway so it will be a day of marking for the college, braving the post office to dispatch online orders and then trying to secure the other items that are required from the above list - all of this is health permitting of course. Stay safe everyone. Andy
