  2. It's not that well known that Beachy Head ran in Scotland and joined the pre-grouping foursome on special excursions up here. Or at least that's the excuse I have for buying it...

Would Rule 1 extend to locomotives with faces rather than smokebox doors?

And it really did run on a Western branchline!

  3. On the '68 theme, just looking at some of Paul Riley's pictures of 8Fs over Copy Pit during the 67/68 winter. Wow.

  4. Feeling rather pleased with myself after getting an ancient Hornby L1 chassis to work, ready to go under my similarly ancient GEM D30.

      Any pictures please?

  5. Have my Union Mills J38 sat in front of me, next to my Bachfar J39. No real comparison in detail terms but by god the J38 is a slogger.

  6. Sat on a Turbostar in Aberdeen and able to connect to GWR Wifi - training HST nextdoor!

At least you'll get the best country weather. . . .drizzle

  7. Just listened to the Final Speech from "The Great Dictator", quite possibly for the first time ever. Powerful stuff indeed.

      It's a powerful film, isn't it?

Oh yes, probably as good a many a President of old and even Churchill.

  8. 6 years on from release I've finally caved in and bought a couple of "Tommys". Not sure how they'll fit on an ScR layout mind....

They are rather nice. I stopped at four but feel a couple more coming on in due course.

  9. 56 hours to get from Oban to Aberdeen. New record!

Took me eight days to go the other way round, but admittedly that was via the Outer Hebrides...

I used to have a car like that.

  10. Stevie Nicks is like Led Zeppelin for me. Don't listen to them for ages but then "rediscover" them and can't understand why I don't listen to them more often. Amazing music, no other word is suitable.

She could turn her voice to anything and it'd sound great. She also that wonderful ability to sound just as fantastic live as recorded, in stark contract to many artists today.

Not much in it but i prefer Pat Benatar

  11. Mildly amazed to see one of my lads produce an old school STG PRIV pass for renewal today, not only that but his previous pass (issued 2017) is still a hardbacked card and states "2nd Class, for use on all British Rail and Sealink services". Privitisation has obviously passed some things by, even nearly 30 years on!

    1. BernardTPM

      BernardTPM

And Sealink was sold off as far back as 1984.

  12. Does Modelmaster Jackson Evans still exist? An order placed in November and about half a dozen emails and attempts by phone since to make contact and nothing.

    1. toboldlygo

      toboldlygo

They certainly do, they are currently dealing with a very large back-log of orders

    2. gwrrob

      gwrrob

Their email offers bring in lots of orders, hence the backlog.

  13. On an IEP from Temple Meads to Paddington, first trip in one. If the Western is getting these things and we're getting their HSTs I know who's come off better in that deal - sterile, cold interiors, average ride and seats only marginally more comfy than a park bench.

The interior design is poor, but that's not a huge drama to fix. The 50 shades of grey make it feel cold and sterile, and the most comfortable part of the seats is the headrest/antimaccasar. Unless we broke down, it would appear we changed to Leckie at Swindon - acceleration was impressive after that.

    3. The Stationmaster

      The Stationmaster

They are very much ICCEs - Inter City Curate's Eggs with some good points and some bad. One good one is doing away with the high seat backs of GW HSTs - they are awful things and the slippery leather seats in 1st have also gone thank goodness.

PS No 'lectric at Swindon yet, you're about a year too early for that.

Would it have been Didcot perhaps? It was a stop or two before Reading.

  14. Sleeper to Euston tonight and Bristol tomorrowm then northbound sleeper again tomorrow night. First ever trip on the GWML to boot, so time to see what these Western people keep raving about....

The impressive First Class lounge in Paddington does at least have photographs and posters of Kings and Castles on the walls! I think I'm outward on an HST and back on an IEP, so the journey will be comfortable one way at least.

  18. Until now I hadn't realised just how closely related an HR small Ben and an LSWR T9 truly were...

    1. Steamysandy

      Steamysandy

They were built side by side in the same works at the same time!

    2. uax6

      uax6

      But, be careful, the superheated T9 is a closer match to the HR Big Bens, the boiler being too high for a small Ben. Theres lots of other lookie-likie HR locos too ;-}

  19. Currently admiring a Jones Goods in HR green alongside Cardean in Caley Blue....

  21. Currently having an evening working my way through the back catalogue of Fleetwood Mac, tomorrow Led Zeppelin. It's oddly easy to forget just how great they were.

  22. The NBR stud is coming on leaps and bounds now: C15, D34, J35, 2 x J36, J37 plus another two kits (J35 and J37) to build. Bound to be a full NBR RTR range announced soon then....
