After initial experimentation with a Bach/Far starter set, the concept of running scale length expresses on an area no larger than the dining room table is gaining enthusiasm. This N gauge lark could prove addictive.

Not too bad, but at the moment my only stock is bogie coaches. Four wheel wagons may prove more of a challenge. I've a Farish A2, some stock and more track in the post and a baseboard will hopefully follow shortly. I'm looking at 6 x 3' with perhaps an extension to 8' if space presents itself. With a board of that size I can have a good run of track (roundy/roundy) and more than adequate siding space.

I think the attraction is the fact that you can have scale length trains and have a layout that looks more like the real railway. And coaches and diesels are really good quality. When I look at the pictures of the steam engines though i have questions. To be fair I think they look better in the flesh so to speak though.

Bought the "Summer Excursion" Farish set, plus some extra track to go with it. My first venture into N gauge.....

Surreal text of the year from my sister "have you got Annie and Clarabel coaches?". On enquiring why it would seem she's bought the Hornby Santa Express set to run around the base of her Christmas tree (already up!). She's about as far away from any interest in either real or model railways as it's possible to be.

On a Hull Trains 180 for the very first time, running down to Donny from Paragon. Never thought I'd be wishing for a Voyager, jeez....

Perhaps it was just a bad 'un, but the vibration and hunting movement was particularly poor indeed. The 158 I used for DON-HUL on Friday was very smooth by comparison. The expeience was not helped by the engine beneath noticeably revving up/down in quick succession on a continuous basis, perhaps something to do with traction control (if fitted) due to the cold conditions.

I'd agree with Stationmaster, I'd rather have a 180 over a Voyager, but funnily enough before I'd read your reply thought to myself that I do seem to remember the last one I was on having a bit of a vibration issue and the noticeable engine speed changes that you mention. Still find them to be nicer inside though!

On a southbound HST and there's a woman sat at a table changing a baby atop the seat adjacent despite the vestibule toilet having a baby changing facility. The mind boggles, not to forget the hygiene/cleanliness issues.

Just enjoyed another massive Dire Straits session tonight and am seriously thinking about buying a Stratocaster (and learning to play it properly) at long long last. Problem is, how to tell SWMBO?

Two austerities and a Shire hooked on the front, hauling five coaches with a Hiker hanging off the tail. Quite a sight!

Carriage maybe 30% full. Sat at a table (reserved seat) with one reserved seat opposite, person comes in and sits directly opposite so that neither of us can now stretch our legs, seat adjacent empty. Puzzled look when I slide across to the next seat to ensure legroom. Never underestimate the stupidity of the travelling public.

Go for a drink tonight with the lads and risk dementia in later life or be a miserable b****r and think of my health. Here's to going doolally!

A1 and a Lord Nelson last week and an A4 to enjoy on Sunday. Still incredible to think we can enjoy such sights in 2015.

Used a Rail Warrant in anger today for the first time in many years, for a full open return. Still, at least it's not my money!

The dream shall never die....

I see Vermin East Coast now have security guards on the trains with obligatory hi vis vest and the words "Security Ambassador" emblazoned on their backs. A dry train as far as Newcastle, presumably beyond there a special seal is broken and passengers become much more civilised?

Perhaps the miseries amongst us can explain why the 0952 ex Aberdeen is a dry train, yet the 0752 nor any of the other trains North/South that day are the same. As for dealing with the public, I work on passenger ships where if we have violent/disruptive/drunk pax we don't have the luxury of phoning BTP and then locking ourselves in until someone else deals with them.

Bought my 30th and last Platform 5 combined volume today, only really got it and the last couple out of slight curiousity over the modern railway which has now almost evaporated. Quite a difference from the first edition I bought in 1985!

I may be showing my age here, but over the last few years I've noticed more and more often that when travelling "on the cushions" Drivers/Guards (conductors) always travel first class, even at the expense of FC ticketholders who have to stand. When did that become normal practice?
-
Why is it that when you're sat a table seat on a train, if someone else appears they always sit directly opposite rather than diagonally, thereby ensuring neither of you can stretch your legs. Or is such logic a step too far for the great unwashed?

The earth belongs unto the Lord and all that it contains, except the Western isles alone, for they are all Macbraynes.

47 years ago to almost the minute, 45318 was charging down Aughton Bank at nearly 80 mph, straight into the history books. The end of a glorious era indeed.

It would be nice to travel on a VTEC HST with working power points on occasion, not that I'm asking much.

Blues Express weekend in Poland - finally home this afternoon and am like the walking dead.

Another stock cupboard rearrange. What was the Steam/Diesel/Coaching stock cupboard is now just the steam cupboard, and full!

Hornby LNER A3 BOOK LAW now on it's way apparently - a long time coming!
