  5. My descent into the mysterious world of N gauge continues. Just joined the NGS and I've only now discovered the existence of Union Mills. Temptation abounds...

Fantastic, isn't it! 90MPH Bittern? Pchah!

  9. Smoke in my eyes, soot in my hair, cinders in my shoes. I'm watching the needle falling away and singing the eight freight blues.

  10. Off to Thurso today, first time on the North Road since (I think) 1988. No doubt one or two changes...

Alas no, on the 1400 ex INV and staying in Thurso tonight, then onto the boat in the morning. Running a bit late as the booked 158 for the Kyle train threw a tantrum so our set was robbed for it, then had to wait for another set to run around the triangle before we were able to board and go.

  11. Chilly outside but clear, with the Northern Lights brightening up the sky.

  12. RIP Martin Crowe. Now off to listen to "his" 12th man interview...

  13. Ah well, hopes of some real Scottish prototypes dashed again. Always next year I suppose, although I've lost count of how many years I've been saying that.

For some, however the quintessential NBR loco - J37 - is no longer available as a kit. I've spent years looking for one at shows and on ebay and still with no success.

Kits are the only option, CK. No real problem for the likes of me, but a serious hindrance for the less technically able.

  14. Should really have an early night in readiness for the long journey south to Model Rail Scotland courtesy of Scotrail, however a drop of Jura beckons.

  15. Kevin Bloody Wilson - genius.

Oh, they are, TBS. I saw them the last time they were over in the UK; sadly I think I'll be away for this year's tour :(

I didn't realise until the other week that I had "Welcome To The Pleasure Dome" on vinyl - the '80's - if you can remember them - you're doing a lot better than I am (man).

      Two Tribes,,,,,,superb bass line.

  18. I keep noting occasional references to "Steam punk", something I'd never heard of before. Anyway, I've finally done an internet search on the term and now I'm even more bemused.

Go to a comic com convention like I did last year. That was an eye opener.

Steam punk paraphernalia costs a s..t load.

Computers driven by steam and mechanics. And a utility belt with tea cups and telescopes. Think jules Verne in the European space station.

  19. More garbage from head office: we've just had a rebuke for not referring to staff as either "colleagues" or in the numbers sense as "headcount". I often wonder if this kind of thing is something our underemployed and overstaffed desk jockeys dream up to bolster their Linkedin achievements/lies section.

Tim, it would seem not. Despite being on a supposed efficiency drive some staff are obviously underemployed enough to spend time coming up with nonsense like this! Maybe they think it makes them more efficient?! I suspect it spreads like a virus; one delusional individual in management comes up with it to appear fresh and original, then it spreads from company to company.

Our HR is now 'Strategic HR'. That means they don't do HR, they leave that to the line managers. Got a problem employee, you have to deal with it yourself. So what do HR actually do then? Still waiting for an answer on that one.

Sad, very sad. I once worked for a global plastics/ chemicals company that renamed/ combined/ rebranded about once a year it seemed. Every time, stationary and uniforms were wastefully ditched, and new, less workable computer systems foisted upon us, with attendant wasteful retraining. Meanwhile market share seemed to be lost to other, more stable concerns. I took the redundancy package and ran asap.

  20. Well the lower 3/4 of the TV screen is now a permanent cyan type colour, time for a new one I think.

  22. First trip on a VTEC Mk3 with the new cheapo PVC seats with yet more Vermin branding to message the masses. At seat power still doesn't work, quelle surprise. Hopefully once they get past sticking their logo everywhere they'll pay some attention to the mechanics and electricals.

  25. Onboard yet another VTEC HST where the carriage power points aren't working, still I see more Virgin branding/uniforms are now appearing, so that's alright then.

Was on Abellio Mk3's today, charging points all fine. Sadly DRS 37's weren't on the connecting service this morning, only appearing this afternoon.
