  2. Apparently the double florin is still legal because no-one put it in the legislation for decimalisation. I never saw one (or heard of one until recently). Of course they are worth far more than 4 bob and in any case no-one would recognise them at the till if you offered one.
  3. An example which survives today being the cattle dock at Highley on the SVR: https://glostransporthistory.visit-gloucestershire.co.uk/images/SVR_2013_07_Highley station_cattle.jpg I think such an arrangement might not suit some modellers, who perhaps would prefer somewhere out of the way where they can 'park' their cattle wagon (however non-prototypical that might be) rather than having to run complicated shunt manoeuvres to simulate loading and unloading cattle from a dock which is 'in the way' of other movements within the station. Not everyone is a fan of "operational interest" to that degree. Of course it doesn't help that it is probably next to impossible to model the actual process of loading and unloading of cattle (though it wouldn't surprise me if some has had a go at doing so). Hence, I suspect, the somewhat cliched shortish siding serving a both cattle dock and an end loading dock, providing a convenient place to park a couple of single-purpose wagons out of the way of the to and fro of more general purpose freight stock. Of course, just because it's a bit of a cliche that doesn't mean that it never existed in the prototype (buses have been known to pass over railways on bridges, after all!) but at may be that such arrangements occur more frequently in models - and perhaps more especially track plans - of fictional locations than was actually the case in real life.
  4. Similar but not quite the same here. Only used ~18.5KWh/£1.40 of imported electricity 6-10May and hoping today and tomorrow will be zero imports but from Monday it may change. (Tesla Powerwall with notional 13.6kWh storage capacity)
  5. I was just assuming that York was a swap over point between North/South bound trains although thinking about it, it may have usually been a Peak taking over from the Deltic?
  6. I'm currently watching the North-West 200 live coverage on the BBC website. Gorgeous weather in Antrim and big crowds.
  7. Good moaning from a sunny Charente. No aurora this far south. However it is up in the mid 20's. Emily and her mums have been spoken to. She was showing off a variety of cuts and grazes that she got falli g over in the playground. Just like her mother and grandmother. A tip run has been done and there are now the three weed patches to cut. It' s due to rain for the next few days so they need to be done. Beth is adjusting to doing things with just her left hand. I'm havi g to sign official forms pp. However she has mastered one essential art.lifting and drinking from a wine glass without spilling. I'm even Managing to cook things that she can eat with just a fork. Last night was a chicken curry. Ttfn, Jamie
  8. I'm not sure what stock you intend to run, but judging by the photo I guess a mix of EMUs and Mk1 hauled stock? If you can restrict platform 3 to shorter non-gangwayed vehicles like EPB stock, they will probably look less offensive running through the reverse curve.
  9. i need to do something here as from testing all the locos some hit it :( back to the drawing board, your idea would certainly resolve the current issue if done right.
  10. Would be good, ok in the day but suffering another bout of pain there recently hasn't helped. Spraining myself due to low testosterone is easy to do. Even sneezing can bring it on and i seem to have a lot of hay fever symptoms recently. Anyway, the sun is shining here and Kathy is making her latest batch of carrot soup and the bread maker is rocking gently as i speak.
  11. Thank you. I foolishly did not return RCTS 4-coupled tanks to the bookshelf and now cannot find it. So, as regards the picture of 1158, to sum up what we know so far, the MEX in the background seems to have 16" letters. It looks a reasonably fresh application. The changeover from 25" to 16" G W lettering was specified in the CME's Circular 3627 of 17 August 1921 (gwr.org), so is generally reckoned to occur c.1921. Barring any experimental/transitional liveries or earlier introduction for cattle wagons, that would seem to give us a rough 'not before' date. The 'no later than' date is March 1929, or whenever 1158 left for Swindon for what would be her fitting of a B4 boiler. The application of 'GREAT WESTERN' on the tank sides was, IIRC, introduced in 1923, so would presumably have been applied on the first repaint after that, with, in most cases, the number plate being moved rearwards on the tank side to accommodate. Six years seems a long time without a repaint, but the early '20s was probably a time of maintenance back-logs, so I suppose it is possible that 1158 did not enter the shops until the boiler replacement in 1929. Miss Prism points out this is at Exeter, but I do not have any information on allocation in the 1920s that might, or might not, narrow the c.1921-1929 timeframe. Certainly there seems to have been an influx of the new Collett 0-4-2s to Exeter in 1932, so I can imagine they probably displaced 517s on the Exe and Teign Valley services, with this particular loco withdrawn in March 1931. I find that I do have a copy of Rowledge's first and last allocations volume, which shows 1158 to have been a Newton Abbot loco in 1922. Since I have no intention of modelling anywhere on the GW in either 1922 or 1947, this had proved a uniquely redundant volume until now!
  12. I once saw a James Bond film dubbed into German. It was hard to keep a straight face when the hero introduced himself- "Der name ist Bont, Chames Bont."
  13. Thanks for advice. I will look at the Woodland Scenics product and take care at baseboard joints etc. Having thought about it bit more in relation to my plan I would not use with intermediate layer of cartridge paper and will attach track templates (Templot) directly to the underlay. Iain Rice himself seems have lost interest in the idea. Using the "Chunks" of trackwork would difficult to implement as has been said. Do you know if the tacky adhesive was like a latex carpet glue. This is what I was thinking of using in the absence of Copydex.
  14. I thought similar but couldn't be bothered to type it all out . 😎
  15. Good morning everyone Another bright sunny start to the day here in England’s northwest corner. We didn’t stay up last night to see if we could see the aurora, there’s too much light pollution here. I’ll shortly be setting off to collect Ava, who is spending the day here with us. Our first task will be to finish making the cheesecake I started yesterday afternoon. After that, I suspect she’ll be doing a bit more sewing, as she’s a project that’s almost completed and sunshine means light is very good at the moment. So, whilst Ava is sewing, I might do a bit more card modelling. Back later. Brian
  16. Hi the joys of primer. I use Vallejo acrylics all the time. If you intend to use light clouds, use a light primer, and the opposite goes for dark colours. Have a look here https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/ https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/?s=primer Yes, there's more than one colour primer about. Do your homework first, it helps. https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/hobby-color-charts/ Regards Jeff
  17. I love my batteries. 3 days and we haven't taken any power from the grid and the batteries were still at 70% capacity this morning. :-) Cheers Dave
  18. Ok, not just me then. Will drop a message on Monday. Thanks. Roy
  19. Not quite "Physician, heal thyself", but close! Mark
  20. Following your ballasting ‘adventure’ with interest as I am about to tackle a similar area on my layout. A bit late but I’ve encountered similar problems. My old pva seemed to go ‘off’ so I bought some new and it was fine. I used silver sand also and it was a right swine - it went blue as did the air in my shed and it took many attempts at weathering to get the colour anywhere near like I wanted it. Keep up the good work and please submit further progress pictures.

  23. It's April 28th 1962 and N7 69621 has been prepared for 'The Great Eastern Suburban Rail Tour'.
