In 2016, Potter Logistics constructed some 5.7km of new track on 10 acres of their site just to the north east of Ely. 13 dead-end sidings were laid and this is where

two-thirds of the Class 442 fleet have been stored following their demise on GatEx services.

Basically it's like a big curving fiddle yard.....

According to reports on the FB Southern Electric Group, they are being fitted with new traction equipment, new brakes, new doors and losing the comfy chairs. According to my son's post on there, they are a complete waste of money as the bodies are rotten. The only saving grace is the very low lease cost. He should know as he was the GVT fleet engineer for the former BR fleet.

How long is the franchise? The usual 7 year job? They won't have to last much beyond that, if that long.

My money is on the 707s becoming sufficiently attractive a lease proposition that they'll end up being given more of an outer suburban interior and replacing the 442s at some point. Or one of the batches of 350s coming available.

Apart from the fact that there is probably no other stock available to hire to choose from, even though they are as rotten as brandy snaps it's still cheaper, (and faster?), to rebuild these than obtain new stock?

The post in question has had its source questioned by the page admin. Probably just to confirm its origin as it seems to be a widely- held view that the 442s are to have a decent amount spent on them.

My understanding is that tbeir Mk3 bodyshells are generally sound though require some love here and there as would be expected for vehicles their age. The traction gear is 1963-4 vintage having come from the 4Rep units so is surely life-expired now. Modern packages should be as close to "plug and play" as is practicable in the rail industry. The intention seems to be to create a fleet matching the 444s for speed and acceleration in order to optimise line capacity between Waterloo and Woking. If everything has the same acceleration and braking curves and makes the same stops (which these days is almost exclusively non-stop or Clapham Junction up loop only) then they can squeeze in a couple more trains.

Re-equiping the 442s would also mean the proposed journey time reduction to Portsmouth is achievable through faster acceleration. It's not the easiest of lines to work but 5 - 8 minutes can probably come out easily enough. Provided they can slot in with other things iat Havant and Portcreek of course.

With Vossloh repowering the 455 fleet and apparently flavour of the month perhaps we might see some of their kit shifting the Plastic Pigs.

Although ironically the 455's being repowered are also being binned within a couple of years as well.  Will be interesting to see where they wind up, replacing the 455's and 313's on Southern seems a fair bet.

4-car and able to work as 8-car would be much better along the Sussex coast than 3-car unable to run as 6-car. But still no toilets. 455+456 for a 6-car would fit almost all platforms (not Aldrington, Fishersgate or East Worthing) and might bring back memories of 2-Bil and 4-Lav units. Except those did have a toilet.

You forgot Lancing, that is still four car as well.  Don't know about the East as I don't go there, yet....

The Coastway West has always traditionally had cast off rolling stock from elsewhere, the three car 377's were just a blip...  One suggestion has been take the ex Class 508 trailers out of the 455/7's and drop them into some 313's to make a four car, they are after all the same PEP body profile.

Indeed - these are virtually the youngest Mk3 body shells of all - granted they've worked hard during their lives and storage is always detrimental to equipment but why would they be rotten as suggested above ................

The original EE546 traction motors are virtually indestructible and would still be ideal at delivering the output from any modern traction package,

But would they be compatible with regenerative braking ? We hear how the 800s are designed around friction braking only coming into play at very low speeds / emergencies as this reduces wear / the frequency of replacement of brake pads / discs / calipers.

That's a good question but would there actually be any need for it as they have a perfectly good friction braking system ?

On slightly more recent developments - these are rumoured to be 442's working under their own power tomorrow  ................................
