brian daniels
This is where I am at so far with the Heljan Wezzy upgrade on a pre-production model we got hold of last year. I have changed the air and steam pipes for cast ones but the vac pipe is ok on the model so I will save the cast vac pipes for wagons. I will paint these off the model and glue them on later. I have replaced the lamp brackets with cast ones as the originals do bend a bit and as I keep putting these models in and out of boxes to run on a few different layouts there is a strong chance they will get broke at some time in the future. Having said that I have not broken an original one yet as they always seem to bend back to where they should be. The speedo has been soldered to a thick piece of brass rod and glued in a hole drilled in the side of the cast bogie, not all the way through though! Think it's ok, I left a bit of room for it to go over undulating track. I have made one set of air pipes under the secondmans side. I have attached them to the bogie with a casting from the JLTRT class 26 that I had spare. Not quite what the valve should look like but better than nothing. Brake and power handles have been changed as these stick up a bit more so are more visible, especially with those cab lights on! I had to move the brake handles in a bit as they got in the way of the window and would not let the body sit down enough.
brian daniels
Thanks for the pics Steve, I am just getting fussy in my old age and don't want to do too much work if I can get away with it.
steve fay
Thanks for the pics Steve, I am just getting fussy in my old age and don't want to do too much work if I can get away with it.Great work so far Brian, I sent for some bits as well, I like the speedo much better than the original which is a bit bendy and never seems to be were it's supposed to be, I need to get the railway room done so it can stay out of its box. With regards the headcode box I think I filed it out and cut the plasticard in in around 20 mins, yours is going to need a paint any way so it's not as though your having to redo the yellow end. Go on mate don't stop now !! Unfortunatley them head Board clips will have to go up by the same amount as well. Can I put a vote in for blue small yellow ends I don't think you've done that one yet. JeffP
Interesting again Brian. It would be helpful to others pondering changes if you said where the new parts came from, and if they are available to us plebs.
steve fay
JLTRT It's best to email them with your requirements. Brian any thoughts on some etched replacements for the brake rigging
brian daniels
The parts I used Jeff are nothing out of the ordinary just their lampbrackets, headboard clips, speedo and cab desk handles. I did use a bit from their class 26 to attach the two airpipes into the bogie as I had nothing that resembles the real thing and JLTRT did not do it either. I am tempted to get their filler castings to replace the plastic ones that keep getting knocked off with the tops of the wheels! I have moved the headcode and clips seeing as you lot keep on at me to do it The plasticard strip under it is a piece of 40thou filed thinner just a tad to get in the slot. Filler is on now so it will be out with the sandpaper after lunch. I did contemplate using the JLTRT brakes Steve but thought it was not worth the effort, or I must be getting lazier in my old age When it's running round the garden the brakes are the last thing I am looking at. steve fay
Great stuff, are you going to use Pete Harvey's couplings on this one?
brian daniels
Well was it worth the work? Damn you lot, I keep looking at the brakes now! But I see there is nothing to hang the front brakes off on the Heljan bogie. I will try a Pete Harvey coupling Steve as I have a set to make up.
steve fay
Looking better already, your way ahead of me now . I'm still waiting for Laurie, still it's going to be worth the wait I keep looking at the brakes two, that why I'm thinking may be an etch as a direct replacement using the same locating holes and plastic brake shoes, that way at least they will stay straight. I'm finding they are starting to sag on the non fixed side. What filler are you using? Edited April 25, 2014 by steve fay
brian daniels
Davids Isopon Steve it is the best filler I think. Well I have just sent an order to Laurie for a set of brake castings. God knows how they are going get fixed onto the bogies but that's something to worry about later. I have also ordered a set of those fillers that get twanged off with the wheels so hopefully a cast one won't break off at the spigot like the plastic ones.
JeffP
"Fillers that get twanged off with the wheels?" I'm intrigued...do tell?
brian daniels
Here you are Jeff. These are a bit vulnerable when, like me, the models are put in and out of boxes frequently.
brian daniels
Here is a picture showing how I fixed the cast speedo onto the bogie and a couple of pictures showing the two airpipes attached to the bogie molding.
brian daniels
Here is a quick question for hydraulic lovers. What is the cable attached to the inner wheel one end on a Western? I see not all of them had it which is puzzling me, so do I need to add it or not? Edited April 25, 2014 by brian daniels
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted April 26, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 26, 2014 Wheelslip indicator? Although I can't find an experimental number for it. Mike.
ozzyo
Hello Brian, Earthing strip. These look to be the wheel rotation counter. OzzyO. Edited April 26, 2014 by ozzyo
Steadfast
Cracking work on the Western Brian, definitely worth the effort. Seeing how you have mounted the speedo and bogie pipework has given me the solution (I think) to how I can fit them to the Dapol one in N, thanks for the inspiration! jo
brian daniels
Thanks for the replies chaps. As Ozzyo says the wire thing was an earth for the ATC, seems logical to me. Did the Warships have the same? Better make sure Heljan include it if it's on the Warships. I decided to make one up anyway as models always look nice with bits hanging off them. This picture just about shows Pete Harveys couplings. It also shows what happens when you spray super glue kicker over the clear headcode glass! Howes has some more glazing thankfully. I added some thin wire to represent the electrical conduit so I can paint it orange as the Heljan representation in a bit flat. This shows the new cast handles on the desk.

ozzyo
Hello Brian, at least you didn't get the cab windscreens. The torsion bar looks a bit heavy to me. don't forget that you still have the wheel counter to do as well. OzzyO.
brian daniels
Nice one Jeff. Will definatly make sure it's on their Warship then. Ozzyo they did do representation of the mileometer!
