I've ordered D5195, a "regression" rat. Built in Darlington, operated in Liverpool and Preston Divisions which where I started my railway career (after a year in Horwich Training School). It is the second from the bottom in the snap below.

Did they give an eta of when the new 25’s would arrive- are they in the country?

thanks

Starting to arrive this month, depending on the model. Of the models I have ordered I was told that 25160 should be here by the end of October, 25324 by Christmas. The boiler /2s are also due by the end of the year and the 25/1s spring/summer. I didn’t think to ask about the 24/1s but I’d guess they’re within that timeframe.

Nice to drop by this morning and see the locos running alongside the layouts. Mostyn is a personal favourite having read the Barrowmore 40s article in Rail Express Modeller all those years ago. I may rave on about 40s and 37s all the time, but the other class I used to enjoy was the humble 25. Can’t wait to get the 2 smooth sided examples on order and 244 to follow next year.

It was nice to have a much more up close and personal experience with Mostyn, it really is an inspirational layout, and a bit of a microcosm. Its great to see the old heavily modified Hornby Sulzers still putting in a shift even though their days are most certainly numbered and their replacements are glaring them down. As Phil said while we had a bit of a chat, the sentimentality in them is immense given a lot of the models were built by folk no longer with us, and in that regard they take pride of place in their obsolescence.

Being able to see the Rats truly out in the wild just confirmed what I thought back at Cradley Heath where I got my hands on the first running sample, these are well worth the wait! Really glad to see that my hunch of the /1 breaking cover was on the mark. The bodies on show look like they'll be able to cater for a lot of future variation and a complete 042 running on Mostyn sealed the deal. The boiler /2s were also a rather pleasant surprise, and I'm rather glad that the release schedule as it currently stands is somewhat staggered, otherwise I think my wallet would have bolted for the door.

Popped by this afternoon before work as a guest of @BR traction instructor rude not to as it was practically at the end of my street!

Very impressive to see mostyn up close and the 25s were beautiful, nice to speak to Phil who remembered me from a long time ago

had a chat with Dave and the Barrowmore guys about c c crumps traffic then I remembered I had a load of CAD drawings from the crump archive under my stairs that I got when my stepdad (Derek Crump) retired, I popped back home for them and gave them to Dave, a bit late for Mostyn’s era but still a nice little archive of late 80s/early 90s drawings such as HTV to Rudd conversion components, I’ve had them for a good 10-12 years and done nothing with them, no interest in them truth be told, so I gifted them to the group to archive as they see fit, they are on what I can only describe as tracing paper that went through a big plotter (I’m sure Dave can put a pic of one of them up)

The Scottish layout in the other room was a beauty too

Resisted ordering a class 25, was tempted by 25912 though!

Unfortunately the 24/1`s will not be arriving with the 25`s, I was in Crewe yesterday afternoon and was told they were delayed until 2024.

Just to say what a wonderful afternoon I’ve had at Crewe today. Exciting to see the locos in the flesh and enjoyable chats with both Philip and Jennie. I have been a very patient boy waiting for Eastfield allocated 25s and ordered 083 soon after it was announced. 244 will now be added to the roster next year 😀 so a few months to save up.

I really enjoyed chatting at length with Brian from Braeside modelling about all manner of things but especially modelling buildings and I was given a few pointers so thank you Brian.

How nice to be able to enjoy the layouts on show without having to steal a glimpse over someone’s ruck sack. Also to be able to chat to the builders/operators while enjoying the layouts. And obviously it was all BR blue so I was in my element.

I won’t post photos as others have got this covered in better quality than my own but I’d like to end by thanking Phil and his team for putting this on and for the invitation to attend.

Great afternoon

To the above I can only express appreciation of the relaxed and congenial welcome to a railway modelling event where quality prevailed in terms of layout and of course SLW 24/25.This is the way to,if you excuse the phrase, set your stall  out by invitation and involving those of like minds. Mostyn I have to say is quite an event on its own.but it’s always great to talk.  Bravo SLW. And a model for others ?

Thanks to Phil and his team for a most enjoyable low key event at Crewe.  Had an enjoyable time chatting with like minded modellers all away from the pressures of an exhibition.  (Alisdair)

Hi,

Hopefully not too much of a digression from the main topic but your nice comment about Mostyn's ageing Hornby Sulzers deserves a good reply. The fleet of Hornby-based 24s and 25s dates back to 2000. It was the first locomotive project where the late David Goodwin and Richard Oldfield worked together. They have gathered great sentimental value over the years and, despite the launch of the SLW Class 24 in October 2015, 24047 and 24133 soldiered on until August 2022 when they were switched off for the final time.

The Hornby-based Class 25s (25057/25058/25166/25281 and 25307) have survived the cutters torch and been persuaded to continue on due to the general shortage of motive power on Mostyn. They are running mostly on memory now, the phosphor bronze pick-ups have dug trenches in the wheel treads and the double Hornby 3-pole motors in each of them are completely worn out. They will be in service when Mostyn goes to Spalding in early November 2023 but not for much longer as the SLW 25s get ever closer.

Cheers,

David (on behalf of Richard Oldfield)
