RMweb Gold Popular Post SouthernRegionSteam Posted April 25, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 25, 2022 (edited) Alright, let's start things off with some miscellaneous shots! First up, Graham brought along a couple of Kernow Railmotors; strategicly placing them around the room, both on the fiddle yard of Polsarrett... ...and on one of Phil's dioramas... I have to say, regardless of being a Southern man, they looked bloody great; the detail and the valvegear in particular is mindboggling! We'll come back to Phil's dioramas in the next post, but on the same theme I did bring along a couple of my latest dioramas that I had produced for BRM: Thank you to Rob for finding a spare table for me to plonk them on! Anyway, at some point during the day, some lovely buildings appeared next to my dioramas. I apologise, but I have no idea who made them, but they are certainly exquisite. Thank you for the heads-up - they are by Alistair, who writes: "Rob wanted to see the "Land Rover in a shed" that was inspired in part by Mick Bonwick, and the other building is a model of my parent's house". Many thanks, Al, they are superb models! Unless I find some more photos later on, I think that's it for the misc pile (don't worry, I think I managed to avoid pointing the camera at other people and their... delightful shirts)... Edited April 25, 2022 by SouthernRegionSteam To include credit to Alistair for his lovely stone buildings. 19 1

RMweb Gold Popular Post SouthernRegionSteam Posted April 25, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 25, 2022 Phil's dioramas As mentioned, our very own @Phil Parkerbrought along a selection of his fantasticly detailed dioramas. I think I ought to take a leaf out of his book and make my dioramas smaller! Anyway, it was great to see them in real life, and I spent quite a while studying the finer details (of which there are many!) 25 2
RMweb Gold Popular Post SouthernRegionSteam Posted April 25, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 25, 2022 (edited) Bridport Town - David Taylor Next up is Bridport Town, a layout I was thrilled to get the chance to operate for the last hour of the show. There was so much detail to look at that I think I only noticed most of it during the editing of the photos! The colouring of everything was perfect - nothing garish or unweathered, giving it a very consistent tone across the board. Once again, thank you, @DLT, for allowing me the opportunity to spend an enjoyable hour operating! I can't wait to see the continuing evolution of Bridport Town. RMweb Gold Popular Post SouthernRegionSteam Posted April 25, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 25, 2022 Now it's @Stubby47 's turn with his two contributions to SWAG - Castell, and his Modulus demonstration. Here's the latter (a very intersting set-up using Wifi via a smartphone or a detached control panel to control all manner of awesome things like servos and such. It all went way over my head, but if I ever get a smartphone I would probably realise just how many opportunities such a system would create): And of course his delightful little OO9 layout, Castell - really unique with the huge castle dominating the background, and really giving a feel for the imposing nature that the real castles have! I particularly liked the pebbledash on the cottage, and also the clever design trick of adding partially hidden buildings behind the castles' curtain wall on the left hand side of the layout; a really effective way of making the layout feel much larger than it is. I was also impressed by the use of not just the ScaleModelScenery kits, but also the leftovers from said kits! And at the risk of being expelled for stereotyping, here's a quick moody 'arty' shot with some 'rain' added in post: 28 3 2
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted April 25, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 25, 2022 Bit late in commenting as always, but massive thanks to Rob & Stu for putting this together. A really impressive line up - particularly pleased to have been able to see Penmaenbach in reality; this plus Ewe, Polsarret an Lanmanlow all showed how much can be distilled into a small space without loosing realism. All the other layouts were brilliant in their own ways. As others have said, it really did seem like the last 2 missing years hadn't happened and we all seemed to fall into our usual mix of banter, informative chat and cake eating! Good to see so many familiar faces again and a shame some couldn't make it. I could easily have spent much longer there but domestic chores called out - coming back from holiday the night before and getting ready for school & work today needed time at home. Thanks to Jamie for steadily filling the thread with high class images too! 8 4

RMweb Gold Popular Post SouthernRegionSteam Posted April 25, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 25, 2022 Thank you, @Ramblin Rich- "steadily" is very kind, glacial may be more accurate; although to be fair I am also writing a blog entry and researching names in the hope that I don't miscredit! Either way, I'm glad you're enjoying the photos - there's plenty more to come... Likewise, to @Stubby47; and thank you for showing me around Castell and explaining its origins and construction! OK, last one for tonight! L'heure Bleue - Al Next to Stu, we had the fascinating L'heure Bleue - a French layout built by @Barry Ten with a twilight period twist (hence the name); plenty of illumination, remarkable buildings, oh, and a working van driving around the centre of the layout (I presume via a Faller road system, but I never actually asked). The moody lighting (some of which were also on a timer) added a lot of interest, and really gave a unique atmosphere that I had not previously experienced from a layout before - top stuff! I'd love to see this layout when set up in a dark room because I bet the effect is incredible. And yes, there were trains as well; but I was captivated moreso by the scenery! And finally, another 'arty' shot for you: Note: Some of these were taken by my older camera because t'other ran out of battery (L'heure Bleue was actually the last layout I got around to photographing), so apologies if they either aren't quite up to the quality of some of the other photos, or they are vastly different in style (due to only having a wide angle lens with me)... 31 3 3 3
RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted April 25, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 25, 2022 Thank you so much, Jamie! A couple of points - yes, it's the Faller car system, and the lighting uses two strips of LEDS - one white light and one colour variable. After setting up the layout, we turned off the white light and just used the colour variable one set to a pink-ish hue and with the brightness turned down a lot. The layout does work best in a gloomy environment which is how it's set up at home. Most of the building lighting is via the Woodland Scenics Just-Plug system which also includes the timing module. 9 9

marc smith
Hi folks. Just wanted to say, I had a great day at Sunday's SWAG do. Big thanks to everyone involved in setting it up. As ever, it was of the highest standard. It was so nice to bump into so many old pals, and like-minded model rail fans. I had some great chats with friends old & new. Thanks to @Barry Tenfor the invitation to come along & help with his superb French layout. Once again, it was something "a bit different" to the other layouts - each of which were also fantastic to see. Thanks also to @wenlockwho was a member of the "L'heur Bleue" team. We were also on the train that was held up by sheep - but we had our own theory as to the cause of the hold-up.... this included another member of the SWAG team, who shall remain nameless Nice photos of the layout too btw @SouthernRegionSteam- here's to next years event 8
RMweb Gold Popular Post SouthernRegionSteam Posted April 26, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 26, 2022 Good morning everyone, @marc smithGlad you like the photos of L'heure Bleue - I stood watching it for a long time near the end of the show, and enjoyed the demonstration of the Faller system - first going up the hill and ending in the bushes (ready for a future expansion!), and also the nerveracking moment where the circuit was reversed and the lorry pelted it down the road narrowly missing the parked car on the corner. Who knew it could be so entertaining watching a van drive in circles! Alrighty, let's pick up where we left off! Ladmanlow Sidings - Alastair Green (hope I've got the right spelling of your name, Al - I've got conflicting spellings!) Carrying on down the far side of the hall we had @Alister_G's Ladmanlow Sidings. Unmistakenly Cromford & High Peak! The fact that Al forgot the backscene is both excusable and a minor problem when the standard of modelling is this good (that, and the fact that the SWAG do is so laid-back that no-one would mind in the first place - that's why I love it!). Anyway, the stand-out feature is probably the lovely (and insanely tall!) stone bridge and all the scratchbuilt stone walling made from individual styrene blocks. I think Al and Jeff (@Physicsman) ought to be awarded some kind of medal for patience for their building of dry stone walls! It was great to watch the layout in action and admire the scenery, and for some bizarre reason, apparently my arrival signalled the end of his running problems - as soon as I turned up, the loco crawled beautifully along the layout. I don't know who was more shocked; Al or me! Usually whenever I point a camera at something it's the kiss of death (and that includes my own layout...). Joking aside, it was fantastic to see Ladmanlow Sidings in the flesh! I hope you don't mind, Al, but I've also added a few photos with backgrounds in (you'll have to settle for the area around Ribblehead rather than Derbyshire!): 27 2
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted April 26, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 26, 2022 As a small aside to the main event, it was quite touching to see so many Landrovers on the layouts. Mick would have been happy. 10 2
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 26, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 26, 2022 Thank you Jamie for some wonderful photographs of Ladmanlow, and your kind comments. Your added background views are very much in keeping with the Derbyshire moorlands as well, and look great, thank you. You are welcome to come and stand in front of Ladmanlow anytime, bizzarely the recalcitrant locomotive waited until you had moved on and then threw another hissy fit, so it was definitely your influence on the day... Thank you to all who came and chatted, we were made to feel really welcome, despite being Northern interlopers into the South West. Al. 7 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post SouthernRegionSteam Posted April 26, 2022 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 26, 2022 @Alister_GYou are most welcome! That is funny about the recalcitrant loco... I've never known my presence to have that sort of effect on a locomotive. Probably the first and last time! Sadly, I didn't think to take photos of BGman's Bizaare and the Bring 'n' Buy sale, so we'll skip ahead to the far end of the hall and visit... ...Parkend Marsh Sidings - John Farmer I was immediately struck by the size of @Re6/6's layout compared to what I imagined it would be like, but I am reliably informed that it is to scale - with only the angle of the far siding being slightly shallower to reduce the width of the layout. As others have commented, being next to the doors/windows, the sunlight blasted the far end with light, creating a fantastic effect amongst the trees. The vegetation, by the way, was fantasticly dense and varied - I need to up my game! Similarly, the colouring was spot-on throughout - I just wish I had more time to watch some shunting. 27 2 3
