It is indeed a very blue livery, and surprisingly close to the original. I was also surprised at how clean most of the locos are. Here is a picture of 605 followed by my representation, pretty clean with a little dirt on it and some rust on the front. Also noticed that the handrails are done up in white and fuel filler cap is red, not replicated on the model. Out came the paint, touched up the steps and rails some grime on the bottom, little dirt on the sides and rust on the plow.

Very nicely weathered.

Some Kato locos have factory painted white handrails and some don't.

I tend to use testers flexible paint that is used on radio controlled cars. It tends to stay on the flexible handrails much longer than other paints. After it's dried I often slightly weather the handrails.

Weve had our fair share of snow this year. In the first picture is the pile at the end of the drive ; its 8ft tall and now has tunnels and rooms in it that I can stand up in! Then the "view" from the train room. To dig down to ground level and find the lawn in the rest of the yard is about 5ft you walk out of the front or back door and then go up onto path out.

I think spring melt is some time off.

  • 3 weeks later...

Decided that I could start on the area behind the TMD. It is currently rolled up paper and an opening, I would like to turn it into a hill, rocky area and tunnel.

With this roughed in started to work on the scalescenes tunnel; forgot how enjoyable putting these kits can be.

Then slipped into place to see how it would look.

Think it will look good. The back of the tunnel has been blanked off so it will be dark

Bit of a slow day today, not doing any flying, so stuck sitting in the hotel. Before heading to work the other day, these arrived in the post. Some nice vehicles from Oxford Diecast. Vw mini van, original mini, plaxton bus, lorry and some taxis. These are nice looking models, will need to have a little bit of weathering to tone a bit. Will investigate if putting people in is possible, the bus is as ive done that before but need to look closer at taxis and lorry.

Also brought out the plaster sheets and covered the paper and sculpted to hill side. This will be covered in grass using method described earlier in the thread. Around the headshunt wanted to look like they had to cut into hillside to get the line to fit. So rocks were brought in and loosely fit into place, will need to be blended in a bit more if I decide I like it.

Then a bit or an artsy photo looking back toward the new hill.

.

The landscaping is coming along nicely.

Those vehicles are very nice.

I must get an Eddie Stobart truck next time I see one for sale or put an order into Hattons.

I tend to mask the glazing then give them a couple of pass of Dulcote spray.

Tones them down nicely.

My sympathies.

We had two cats some years back one was 11 and the mother we don't know how old she was  but both died within days of each other of different symptoms.

Was a very sad time.

All the best.

Thanks for all the support. Oliver was the last of our original four cats, our dog and kitten have spent today wandering around looking for the old timer.

Decided to do some static grass today. Using my method, mentioned earlier, I made up a sheet of static grass. It was then installed and blended in. Fencing, bushes and some other bits were added. Still need to finish of the top tunnel.

That looks really good Stephen; the last pic is particularly convincing...will keep your static grass sheet method in mind for future use!

I find being able to do the static grass on the workbench and then fettle the sheets into place makes for less erant fibers on the layout. Earlier in the thread is a step by step of the method.

More time for grass and rocks to appear today. Another sheet was applied around where the rocks were to go then the rocks were brought in and blended.

Photos start from further back and then get closer

Looks like roof and wall repairs are in order for the shed.

Then a photo that I think works well, made it look like it was taken on a poloroid type film.

While waiting for the redesigned shed from Scalescenes I decided to try out Model railway scenery who do a similar product. I liked the idea of some billboards on the urban side of town so picked them and after a bit of workwork I had two. I built one that has had the poster taken off and the asda one. With care it is possible to change out the posters which is a nice feature.

Nice,

The one on the hillside ought to either have a little platform for the guys putting the poster up to rest their ladders on, or a flat bit of surfaced (paving flags or a bit of cheap tarmac) to rest their ladders on down on the ground.

Hopefully this works, but this link to Google street view shows a set of boards I used to pass on my way to and from uni https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.403225,-1.526405,3a,75y,90h,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sJME2NYE9rStAnVcJPBYu1g!2e0

You can just make out the run of paving at the base of the boards

Thanks for the link, hadn't realised just how much billboards had sprung up! They seem to be everywhere in that image. Might have to go with a platform as there is no room for paving.

So went a bit mad with billboards tonight. First off, as suggested, a platform has been added to the billboard on the embankment. Its a bit wonky and my excuse is that this billboard is falling into disrepair, but i think it does look better with the platform.

Then decided Gloucester Road station needed signs too. So two more were made up, used matchsticks for the legs; i also didnt wrap the frames. Really struggled to get these crisp on my previous two, think the edges and corners look much sharper.

Also as the weather has improved thoughts of cycling outside have returned, so too on layout.

Hi Stephen,

The billboards are looking great. I might upgrade the kit actually and include a platform. Will experiment a bit with ways to create one. The rest of your layout looks excellent too.

The irony being I hardly ever saw the huge billboards at the side of the road when driving or cycling, only when skateboarding as I face right!

Gloucester Road has never really been tied to a specific time or place, or had much of a backstory; a vague modern image time frame. It‘s mainly a recreation/escape for when i want to "return" to England. I have many happy memories of visits to places, friends and family by train over the last 40 years. However, for some reason the NSE livery has always been very striking to me.

So with that in mind i need a little help in explaing how the NSE branding could have survived into the present day. Mainly how my two stations and TMD could have NSE branding and be served by the current stock of TOCs. If you are good at story telling and rewriting history i would appreciate some input to come up with a history.

Thanks

Stephen
