One from today - just before the pouring rain struck - lightly loaded but the driver was clearly enjoying himself as he was still thrashing the nuts out of 70019 over the summit at Grateley after the climb from Laverstock North Jn - 14:17 4M67 Soton - Ham Hall

Today a Colas Rail class 70 finally dropped onto the 6J37 log train from Carlisle yard to Chirk.  Here are a selection of photos from Euxton Balshaw Lane station were it was held at a red signal for a period of time which allowed me to go just down the line to Balshaw Lane Junction were it continued its journey, coming off the slow line and onto the fast.

Passed me at work earlier. It was following 70806 a couple of hours earlier that was on a tamper drag from Tebay to Rugby (via Carlisle and the S&C).

Cheers,

Mick

It's a reasonably direct route, albeit across country.

Over-night engineering work sometimes affects the loaded westbound working 6M32, which runs in the early hours and is timed usually to pass along the three track section around Mirfield and onto the Calder Valley line before the majority of TransPennine Express and Northern services ramp up for the morning 'rush hour'.

It's the only freight these days that regularly uses the Copy Pit route and consequently means it avoids the busy routes and junctions around the northern side of Manchester.  It's timed for a load of 1,760 tons and the gradient westbound on the Copy Pit route, predominantly 1 in 65 easing to 1 in 77 towards the summit, results in it being a solid class 60 working, both with the current contract holder, Colas and predecessor contract holder DB Schenker (as it was at the time).

It's not unknown for the loaded and empty working to be routed via Rochdale though and towards Manchester.  It happened a few years ago when there was extended work taking place in one of the tunnels on the Copy Pit route.

Colas has occasionally used class 56, usually double-headed but a solo 56 also handled the train recently.  Colas class 70s have only been used on 6M32/6E32 a handful of times.  This mornings returning 6E32 comprising just two bogie tanks is the shortest consist I've personally seen.  The more usual total is at least seven.
