RMweb Gold MarshLane Posted January 9, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 9, 2017 Hi folks, Firstly, a very Happy New Year to everyone. I hope Santa brought you all the trains you were wishing for. I thought I'd open 2017 with some piccies taken this evening while sneaking round the depot. I was close to being spotted at one point, but I think I got away with it. Well, I think that's all for the moment. There are various workbench projects on the go at the moment, plus various other projects on the layout itself, but more on those later. Cheers for now, Dave Dave, Any chance I could come stay for a few weeks, the real railway scene round you way is far more interesting than anywhere else I've found ... 37s, 47s, 56s, 58s, they've all long vanished round us! Anyway enough of the real thing, when are you going to post some pictures of that model of yours? Rich PS I think you've really worked out how to build a time machine and your tricking us with this, it's simply too good! Don't drive a Delorian do you?
Marcus 37
I think Rich might be right and your fooling us. You haven't built a layout, just a Tardis. Seriously though, Awesome pictures as always. Cheers Marcus

RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted January 9, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 9, 2017 (edited) It's pretty much the last question in the survey mate. You dont have to vote in every category. MRDBLUE17
Hi Dave, Superb photos, like the 37's lined up like that. There are several shots amongst those that really appeal and bring life to the scene. I've just added my vote for you too. Thanks Mark

Believe it or not, the 37s just happened to be parked like that; it wasn't a deliberate photo line-up. Thanks everyone for your support, much appreciated as always! Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Just thought I'd post a couple of pics from a quick project I've just completed. This was to fit corridor connections to my 4-coach Mk 1 rake which is used on Fife services. This rake has undergone the usual WW treatment and is fitted with the Bachmann close-coupling "pipes". I have now fitted it with corridor connections from York Modelmaking and I'm pretty pleased with the results. The only problem is that the Bachmann close-coupling pipes sometimes cause derailments over complicated trackwork especially and the corridor connections tend to make this problem worse. I've tried various ways of reducing the problem with reasonable results. I only use one connection between each coach and I've lubricated the rubbing plate, as well as the close-coupling mechanism. Lubricating the wheels to make sure they're free-running also helps I find. So far the running trials have been reasonably successful and I'm very pleased with the look. Another possibility is to add some more weight to the coaches if it proves necessary. Here's a shot of Railfreight 26025 leaving Waverley on a service to Kirkcaldy... The only thing left to do to this rake to complete it is to fit interior lighting, but I've yet to find some suitable reasonably priced lighting units fitted with capacitors, as I really want to avoid any flickering. In other news, work is proceeding on a new Bachmann banger blue 47550 University of Dundee and a Hornby 08 as Haymarket-based 08421. Pics to follow soon I hope. Cheers for now,Dave Edited January 12, 2017 by Waverley West

Must be Christmas. 56 and 58.jpg Peering through the rather grubby window on road 8, I managed to see 37012 Loch Rannoch... Loch Rannoch.jpg Loch Rannoch 2.jpg There was also an unusual visitor in the shape of 45144 in the main shed, alongside the usual Scottish 47s... Main shed 1.jpg An aerial view of the main shed showing the new roof vents... Main shed 2.jpg Now for some shots showing the new inspection platforms and interior wall detail... Main shed 3g.jpg Main shed 5.jpg 37698 was also receiving attention... Railfreight 37 2.jpg Staff 1.jpg Main shed 7.jpg A PW gang has moved in opposite the depot to start work on the line. Dressed in 1980s-style minimal hi-viz tops of course... Staff 2.jpg Back at Waverley later that evening, the platforms were full... Waverley West Closeup.jpg Waverley West.jpg Well, I think that's all for the moment. There are various workbench projects on the go at the moment, plus various other projects on the layout itself, but more on those later. Grimleygrid
Just when you thought that your depot scene could not get any better, stunning modelling Dave. The latest depot shots are some of the best that I have seen, love the Brush 4s in the shed with the inspection platforms. Your platforms really bring a different dimension to your excellent shed. There is something about 47/7s and Scottish Large Logo 47s..... Loving the Original Railfreight 26, they looked great in that livery, it really suited them. RMweb Premium 45156 Posted January 13, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 13, 2017 Dave - I have yet to complete the voting in the poll, as I can't decide on my choice for layout of the year, as it's between WW and Gilbert's Peterborough North. Both are icons of realism and attention to detail, so I still need to ponder.

I'm pleased with the inspection platforms. Lots more detailing to do inside the main shed, but I'm going to move on to the shed on road 8 next. There's plenty to do there too. My aim is to keep improving each part of the layout, so that it's all to roughly the same standard at any one time. And yes, Scottish 47/7s and 47/4s, 26s, 27s, not to mention named 37s, can't beat 'em in my view. So full of character and a little bit different from the rest of the network. There are some great layouts in the list and I can't compete with some of them in terms of resources (I'm thinking especially of Liverpool Lime Street, a stunning piece of modelling if ever there was one. I wish my dad was still around to watch it develop; he knew the station so well during the era it's set in).
Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Just a quick post to update you on some loco projects I have on the bench at the moment. There have been no new locos for WW for months and now three come along at once... First up is 47550 in its early 80s guise. This Bachmann loco has had its windscreen frames de-riveted and boiler port plated over. It has also been renumbered and fitted with buffer beam detail, including ETH, as it's being renumbered from 47001 (and with missing centre 'plough as per the photo I'm working from). There's a little bit of touching up to do and then it's on to the weathering stage. To be named 'University of Dundee'. I have a weakness for Scottish 47 'namers', as you probably realise. Next is 08421. I had to do quite a bit of research to find a Haymarket 08 that would match the Hornby version I had, as most Haymarket 08s come from the later series with a vacuum exhauster box (the boxes at the front) on each side. Don't ask me what a vacuum exhauster does. I suspect it exhausts vacuums though, to get a bit technical for a moment. I eventually came across 08421 which fitted the bill perfectly. I even have photos of it at both Haymarket and Waverley. This has now been renumbered. It needs its cab roof painting and numbers sealing. I still need to decide how far I'm going to go with this loco as there are all kinds of detail differences (marker lights in particular). Finally, look what the nice postie brought me this morning... I've been struggling not to buy one of these for some time, as it really is a bit early for WW. I'm ashamed to say I wilted in the end. It's such a lovely model and it oozes quality when you open the box. I ran one on a friend's layout at MRS in Glasgow and the sound was just superb. The sound of a baby Sulzer burbling away is probably my favourite sound of all on the railway and it just proved too much for me to resist in the end. That's all for now. Hope to be back soon.
