Shedmaster
Good Evening, Progress is definately happening at last, having had a breakthrough with a problem area, the floor ramping. Well, it shouldn't have been hard to work out but I struggled here, whereas I would not expect a more experienced modeller to have had any problems ! I am trying to recreate this : And it's taken me ages to work out that all I had to do was cut the plasticard base to the right shape in the first place and then add the slope by bending the plastic........simples ! So, what I have now is : The black insert in the 4ft is from a level crossing and will be adapted for our use because it has the check rails in the correct place, the concrete bit will be made to look right of course. I'm thinking it looks very rough at the moment but after painting should look good........finally ! Dave
James Hilton
Can't wait to see it with a lick of paint Dave!
Shedmaster
Hi James, Me too ! Annoyed with myself for not grasping something so simple, and letting this 'hurdle' just drag on, but not long now til I can get onto the painting stage. With the floor painted I can then move back onto the actual building and maybe my special Christmas Project - the doors ! Dave
Shedmaster
Good Morning. After a short absence, I have returned with news from 'The Lane'..........but, MIND YOUR EYES !!!! I can now report that the floor for the 'Electric Loco. Shed' is finally in position and not only that, it has had it's first coat of paint ! The ramping at the London end of the building is now finally complete after much cursing and expense... The ramp is visible here by the inner wheelset, and is still subject to being cleaned up and bordered with a yellow line... I have brought in a Class 33 and a 60 to see how the floor colour contrasts against the Loco. paintwork and I know things need toning down.......however, this is a work in progress... I have some tidying jobs to do now and as mentioned, the yellow borderline, then who knows, maybe the working doors next ? Thats all for now, Dave
Grimleygrid
Hi Dave, Wow you have been busy and by the looks of it very constructive time spent too. Worth all the time and effort as it looks really good. Once the red floor has been covered in dirt and clutter that it will really finish it off. The 33 and 60 look rather nice! Great work, you should have the depot finished by the new year!
big T
Hi Dave Loving the floor and the differing levels - awesome! It has that floated concrete look about it. I can only echo Alex's comments really! Top job. Cheers Trev
Guest Dave.C
My first visit to the thread, very impressed, will be back soon
Shedmaster
Hi again, Thanks for your interest and kind comments......... When you posted and mentioned concrete, Trev, I was outside laying some of my own... This is laid out as per the real Stewarts Lane, however, in reality, the floor is a lot more 'pink' and will take some work to replicate this...........but then, I also like the newly laid, clinical look ! To finish with today, and keeping things topical to my line of work..........I thought I'd start planning for the open day........Welcome to Battersea Stewarts Lane, London... Shedmaster
NO PARKING Good evening. Just a few photo's of progress from Battersea Stewarts Lane, i.e the addition of yellow lines to border our pits, as per the prototype. I thought we'd use something a little different to demonstrate tonight, our Colas Rail 47 727..... You may notice the building isn't seated properly........just as I did 'after' taking the pictures and please excuse the shoddy workmanship underneath the pits........various issues encountered along the way ! Thats all for now, I've run out of masking tape and will have to continue tommorrow....... Dave
Pete Harvey
Very nice Dave. Pete
Shedmaster
Thanks Pete, I can't believe I'm gonna have to weather this lot down to make it more authentic........... I'm just loving the colours here but have a nagging thought........ The floor is an unfortunately good match for..........EWS red................. St. Simon
Hi, Looks very good, but you do need to weather it, it does look a bit bright! B) Can't wait to see it finished, keep up the good work! Simon

MRDBLUE17
Hi Dave, I have enjoyed following your thread and really impressed by your attention to detail and the way it is all coming together so nicely. I do like the shots with the locos included as you have some really nice models to fill the depot with! The whole thing is very impressive so keep up the good work and the updates. Those working doors sound like a nice idea as well. Thanks, Mark
Shedmaster
Hiya, I'm really pleased you're liking progress, slow though it is. So, my next question is probably going to be obvious.......How should I attempt to weather things down to recreate this : I'm also wondering about where I might find some of the small details such as the scaffolding and hand carts ? I wont be going out there today after all........... Only kidding, this is a library picture from my collection, but it's certainly just as cold ! MRDBLUE17
Hi Dave, I would have believed that snow could have been today having seen it lying in Livingston and the roads are really icing over in Edinburgh on my way home very dangerous in places. Just a thought for your weathering - building floors tend to stay quite dry apart from the oil and grease so it might be worth using some railmatch acyrlics for create these on the floor, oily steel, roof dirt, frame dirt etc blended and dry brushed on. The other thing to help create the dirt might be to use Carrs weathering powders as there are a lot of shades that could easily be used to make the kind of colours seen in the photo. Just some ideas that might be worth a try. Thanks, Mark
Shedmaster
Hi Mark, Many thanks for the pointers. As a novice modeller, I will have to learn the skills of weathering from scratch I think, as and when the building is at a reasonable stage of completion. The interior walls will need some filth as well methinks. I'd better get the yellow lines finished first though......oh, and the track laid and the lighting installed and the working doors and and and........... All I wanna do is play trains........... JamesB 34067
Looking brilliant there Dave cant wait to see it finished , BTW do you still work for DBS James
Pugsley
It's all looking very good so far! Check out the Mig range of weathering pigments - I think you'll find those quite useful for the grot on your floor - especially the dust and dirt around the track. Shedmaster
Hi Martin, Thanks for the tip there. When the floor is finished, I can then get the buildings settled in place properly and then move on to the colouring / weathering details inside and out. I've still got the second building to locate into place with it's pit and concrete floor, but I'll be doing this the fun way and spreading it down ! I dunno about running trains by Christmas but then I have got five weeks off, I should be able to achieve something.....lol...... Dave
Shedmaster
Well, This ain't no library picture : I won't be doing much on the layout for this week after all............ Dave
D9JEF
Dave, I am always suprised you painted the railway shed in those colours!!!! Regards Jeff
Kiwi_Ed
I'd say it will definitely put the burglars looking for a nice collection of model trains on the wrong track... Smart move!! B)
Lyddrail
Dave, You have made good progress. However, to produce such a weathered floor I would have started with a lighter colour to make the task easier. Best to model the colour you see rather than change the new colour to old. I am no expert on weathering colours, just a thought. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Shedmaster
Good Morning, Whilst waiting for the new floor paint to arrive, I thought I'd start work on the main buildings. When the floor gets it's final top coat I'll be moving onto the buildings, and so in readiness for this I have started to apply the base colouring. The overall colour is a very dirty beige / grey and for some reason this changes in different lighting conditions, so with some good weathering and the addition of the roof walkways and lighting............I'm hopeful of a good result here.
