EBay madness

Why....?

If you look carefully, you'll probably find that most model railway stuff on "Buy it Now" is available at anywhere from discount to RRP (and more sometimes)

A quick example - 70003 is BIN anywhere from £76 to £99.99

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=Bachmann+70003&_sacat=479&_dmpt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&_odkw=70003&_osacat=479&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

Cheers,

Mick

For sale at the RRP of £93.50.

You can get one from Rails for £79.50, Hattons for £75, no doubt many other places for a similar discount.

Why....?

Because he fancies himself as some sort of dealer, I suppose. Have a look at his 'other items'. It's all very ordinary and expensive. Branchlines would do a much better deal on some of the narrow gauge stuff.

I'd have thought that part of the criteria of being "some sort of dealer" is that you actually offer 'deals' to your customers, ie save them money off the rrp? If, as you say, everything is very ordinary and expensive, then that's not really quite in the spirit of Ebay, I'd have thought.

I guess part of it is Ebay though, I remember selling some unboxed second hand Peco wagons that were available in any model shop brand new and boxed, and they went for almost twice the price you could have bought them brand new. Fair enough when 'bidding frenzy' takes over and what starts as a bargain (I think they were £1 each to start with) becomes overpriced that's one thing, but to have it at a starting price or BIN of the rrp or thereabouts then you'd really have to be a bit of a muppet to pay over the odds, surely?

A dealer method is to get as cheap as possible and sell it for as much as possible. Ie if they can knock the price down by saying it is common and not worth much and try to sell it as rare for OTT prices.

In the case of the ebay shops they will try to get above the RRP as they want to recover the ebay costs by this methods.

I do know somebody who had an ebay shop and won't charging the RRP in the first place and at the end they closed it down as the final price they were getting on the items was not much more than they were paying for them in the first place.

With most industries, buying on the internet is cheaper than on the high street, I guess some sellers are taking advantage of buyers perception that the internet is cheaper than the highstreet.

On the other hand if you live miles from your local model shop, it may be cheaper buying at a little over the odds than driving miles to buy it (saving in time and money).

One of my criteria on going to lesser exibitions is, what traders are going, quite often its cheaper going to a show and paying the entrance fee than paying P&P on two or 3 orders and you get the show thrown in at the same time.

You do get a rather splendid box though . . . I thought Hornby wouldn't undertake to do limited edition commissions these days and that their minimum when they did do them was 1000. Am I imagining that? JE

Looks like something they have produced themselves. Note the tell tale white vapour residue from attaching brass etch plates with CA glue in the picture.

Yes, but what will it sell for?

That MTK Class 70 shell started off last night with a Buy It Now (or Be Ripped Off Now) of £200!!! It disappeared as soon as someone put in a more realistic bid of 99p for it :jester:

But £1.20 is a bit OTT though...

While not having a great deal of kitmaster knowledge I thought the only motorised 'chassis' they did was in the powered van, so unless im wrong the chassis he has listed as kitmaster are Triang, which is what thye look like to my eyes

Tri-ang TT to be exact, though, to be fair, there is a Kitmaster front pony on there!

Stobart products do have a cachet for a certain sort of collector, apparently, just as the firm's trucks attract some degree of adulation. We may not quite get it - but then people in glasshouses......

True and fair point, I do have a great deal of respect for Stobart truckers, some of the most professional on the roads, just seems very expensive to me for what it is as a lowmac and container, as well as the tankers, mind do they have a UK protoype the tankers?

And here's what you can expect it to finish at

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bachmann-BR-RTC-Departmental-Test-Car-6-Mk-2-coach-/320813672504?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item4ab1fc2838

Crazy money, but he does always start off at a very low price and his work always seems to be of a high standard. I think it might be cheaper to commison him to do one!!!

I do know this particular seller personally and so I say good luck to him for making such big "bucks" but its up to the individuals who want to pay these prices - are they RMWeb members? Although I'd like to say that on the same evening I struggled to sell 18 Dapol Workmen which I had individually hand painted, to a high standard at least I thought so for a meager 10 quid the lot - Please can I have he's customers look at my sale items?
