OK....

What has happened here? 🤔

I'm thinking that there has been some confusion about just what this model is, to reach this price (auction ended)?

The listing details look to be correct...

Now, if we can only get a similar result on some of our listings! 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm waiting for the Isle of White coach, quite what that might be is anybody guess.

There was a Midland 54 ft clerestory composite 12-wheeler of 1876 vintage sold to the Isle of Wight Central, where it was used as the carriage part of an ersatz railmotor:

ISLE OF WIGHT CENTRAL RAILWAY - No.3 MILL HILL - 0-4-2ST - built 1870 by Black Hawthorn & Co., Works No.116 - 02/18 withdrawn - seen here propelling the MR 12-wheeled carriage near St Lawrence in 1907 - note that some attempt has been made to enclose the engine and there appears to be a window cut in the end of the coach, perhaps to make a driving position - a home-made attempt at a railmotor?

I like to think this looks like a genuine mistake looking at the other listings by the seller though. These are the almost valueless Del Prado static models.

"May work"! Ah ha!

Crumbs!!!

Its a fair whack for an undersized Triang-Hornby loco from the early 70s. The listing seems straightforward and the photos show all the (lack) of details.  They must have confused R876 with R3639.....

If the changable nameplates are the same as those on my Brit of the same era, then its no surprise that they had slid off to obscurity. Would you say that someone has varnished it, or was that the original finish?

Our old chums Rocket Railways?

This one's a hoot too!

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393907529237

They've also got that good old standby "kitbuilt"

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394016576893

You could put them with R255 ,a "Nellie" 0-4-0 in Somerset and Dorset blue

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394168949809

for spares/repair. Says that it s "not working", but an X04 motored loco isn't difficult to get going again.. Looks like there's damage to the r/h side of the cab, which is carefully not shown.  There's also collision damage to the front l/h buffer....

Laugh a minute territory!

I honestly do not understand how Rocket Railways got any airtime during the Hornby documentary series!

Or is there a different, far more reputable “Rocket Railways”?

This particular bunch of chancers seems to put a lot of 50p scrap bin bits and pieces up on eBay for frankly ridiculous prices!

For £16 I can go to my local, genuine model shop and buy an older Hornby, Triang, Airfix or Mainline coach in various conditions but definitely all better than the above examples! And know that the business owner is having to pay tax on his sales, but at least I have something actually worth working upon as a starting point for something better…

‘This vehicle rebuilt from previous parts’, yes ,but parts of what?  The only components I recognise as being off a previous model railway vehicle are the bogies, and they have odd outside frames, and what look like Airfix plastic kit buffers and buffer beam assemblies.  The buffers are set too high, but that’s the least of this thing’s problems!

I think what's written on the box is "pre war" not "previous". But your question stands.

It also says ‘Class 1’ and ‘4 star’ on the box 😳

Class 1 in a system where the top class is 10, and overrated at that.  In this system, stars are awarded for horribleness, suitably IMO because stars are actually overheated lumps of poisonous radioactive gas, and 4 is the top rating.

Makes sense to me.  Can't be pre-war, it's got 80s Hornby couplings.  A home made toy, clearly not built by a modeller, with an 'interesting' livery.  Not sure it could cope with the normal 00 loading gauge in terms of height. but it seems to have working sliding doors!

I will not be putting in an offer...

Perhaps you could offer to give it a decent burial for free if they sent it to you. (along with a £5 handling fee...)

If this were on a deliberately old-fashioned layout depicting a freelance railway (perhaps narrow gauge), I don't think it would look out of place, especially if those sliding doors do work. I wouldn't expect to sell it for this money, simply because anyone building such a layout would probably prefer to build their own stock, and I've no interest in buying it myself, but I think some here are being a little harsh.

Let's not forget, this model had a mother! 🥸

I've no problem with people selling their own creations , no matter how "basic", on ebay. On the other hand, if a company lists some homebuilt items at ludicrous prices with fatuous descriptions, then they're fair game, its not an attack on the original creator, its a comment on the greed of the secondary vendor.

And if it takes after it’s mother, she is a lady for whom I have the greatest sympathy, but a bit less in the way of respect!🤨

I bought a box of Del Prado tat the other day for £15. One of the models was a 1960s Italian Tibidabo E626 Bo-Bo-Bo electric loco. Pretty rare, and I managed to sell it a week later for €110!

Re built from pre war parts, pre Ukraine war presumably.   I don't blame them for selling it, I certainly woudn't want to own it or admit to re building it.   Could fit a niche on a Far Twittering and Oysterperch tribute layout.
