60091 bears an ugly scar where the nameplate was removed.  A rare visitor to the sidings at York station on 2nd February 2009.

On 28th November 2011, 60015 'Bow Fell' was looking tired at Toton depot.

60031 catches the sun at Ashchurch on 10th February 2009.

Cheers,

  • 2 weeks later...

This weekend certainly has been better for 60s, sadly not as many down in the south east of England.

Steel on Steel at St Helens

60062 "Sonia" heads through St Helens Central, working 1Z32, Knowsley RFT - Tuebrook sidings part of a railtour visiting the north and branch lines

Definitely not N gauge, GBRf 60002 'GRAHAM FARISH 50TH ANNIVERSARY 1970-2020' rumbles passed heading east away from Brighouse on 4th April 2023 with 6E09, Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station, loaded biomass hoppers.

Rumours (from wnxx.com) that the 60s will be gradually withdrawn as their engine hours reach heavy maintenance numbers.

The plan is that some 66s will be regeared to 66/6 spec to take over Class 60 duties.

This may be the time to get the 60 pics whilst you can.

That's going to be a real backward step on certain flows. 59/2s were tried on the Robeston - Theale tanks well over 10 years ago and found to be unsuitable so I can't see single 60mph geared 66s coping any better. I guess the only alternative will be double heading, and since a 60 is way more fuel efficient than even a single 66 that will  be expensive.

That said, one hope I have is that GBRF themselves will eventually buy out DB Cargo

Sorry, I've bitten. So you hope thousands of staff have worry and uncertainty over their future? Right...

Who said anything about anyone potentially losing their jobs? The point being is that DB Cargo have already passed over quite a few of their assets to the likes of GBRF, my idea would be to make one larger company, with said staff still in place and each base (Toton and Whitemoor) as its main outposts!

Selling 10 66s that at the time were stored out of use?

You can guarantee if a such a merge move happened, there would be job losses due to duplication, massive upheaval and changes in working practices. I've seen first hand the effect job security worry can have on a loyal workforce. It's not good.

Prime example, GB maintenance is contracted out to EMD and in future Stadler. DB is in house. Who would miss out?

Two depots at the same town. 20 drivers each. Merged, you wouldn't need 40 drivers to cover the work, so some would be out the door because you have more flex in a larger workforce.

That's enough railway politics, at the end of the day I might be red they might be blue (or green, or orange, or...) but we all wave as we pass one another.

Back to Tugging.

I dunno, I might get a few less ‘can you just’ calls!

GBRf 60095 leans into the curve approaching Brighouse on 20th April 2023 with 6M36, Drax Power Station to Tuebrook Sidings, empty biomass hoppers.

There must be very few IIA-D Drax biomass hoppers left now that aren't carrying the latest livery.  There were only three in this rake.
