The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

According to brush-loco-gen, there's approximately 20 of them coming back into traffic because of DBS sheds going to Poland and the upcoming RHTT season.

60074 is currently in Scotland on crew refresher courses. Why would this be happening unless there's the possibility of more 60's north of the border?

Cheers,

Mick

It could always be to rub DRS's noses in the fact that they won't ever get them lol. Yes i know Carlisle isn't in Scotland but if it means that there will be more running up that way it means they could be running past the DRS depot.

It's on GSW road learning for a couple of ex-Tyne Yard drivers now based at Carlisle, not crew traction refreshing.

It's not a game, it's a business

More to the point though, why on earth would DRS want to buy / obtain / lease some class 60s which would need upwards of a quarter of a million quid spent on overhauls before driver training and certification as well as possible company certification on a new traction - all for no apparent traffic flow which would need class 60s instead of anything else in KM's extensive portfolio.

The class 60s have been / are being systematically run into the ground and need expensive overhauls.

Surely DRS would want locos that are able to run on class 4 trains which rules out the 60's?

40's traction motor repair must have been very simple. taken at 14.30 today.

It looks like a large shopping centre. It is not Lakeside (Thurrock) and I don't think it is Bluewater. The two bowstring girder bridges in the background might give a clue?

It seems odd that a "supposedly" expensive and unreliable 60 was moved north for this humble task. Recent 60 activity has pretty much confined them to a minimal number of heavy haul duties for which DBS appear to begrudgingly keep a few 60's active for.

Surely a shed would have been a more sensible option?

Cheers,

Mick

Assuming that a 66 can be made available...

Seeing how 60074 cannot haul anything except itself then I suppose there is some sense in using it for RL duties.

It is Star City in Nechells, Birmingham, which does have a funfair in the car park.

The two "girders" at the rear of the shot are in fact the Star City building. The Vauxhall garage is on teh right, and the entrance to the gas towers are to the left.

The road in the background is the A47 which runs along side the now mothballed Washwood Heath yard.

Its an interesting view, and I guess its taken from the RMC depot or the sleeper loading gantry!

This is a view looking towards Brum with the road on the right:

  • 3 weeks later...

DB Schenker could possibly raise money by selling off the class 60's or maybe even just a few to a rolling stock comany like angel trains for example, then use the money to lease back the ones they require and overhaul/re-engine them. Just an idea, not sure if it would work or not though

Although it seems like a possible option whilst the majority of the class are still in one piece albeit just a bit internally worn out.

What makes you think Angel trains (or any other ROSCo) would want to buy 60s ? - it makes absolutely no sense for them to take a run down, non standard loco which, in its present state, is unreliable and would require investment to get it back on track  - enthusiasts glasses ?

60071 has replaced 60074 on the Carlisle-Ayrshire route learners (?). Still seems strange to shift a 60 northwards for such a mundane duty.

60074 seemed to be in decent health, being entrusted to this working to go southwards. 60074

60040 turned up again on the 6M32/6E32 Lindsey-Preston bitumen. 2nd time in a couple of months or so.

So there's life in the old tugs yet.......

Cheers,

Mick

One through Scunny around 12.30 today, on empty tanks, heading towards Immingham.

Couldn't see the number as I was driving over a road bridge, and got but a brief glimpse, but the livery LOOKED like 60040.

There were 3 60s through Scunthorpe yesterday afternoon:

60040 on 6E32 Preston - Lindsey empty bitumen

60009 on 6D49 Ferrybridge - Lindsey empty heavy fuel oil

60011 on 6D80 Neville Hill - Lindsey empty traction fuel

Add to that 60010 some time later on the return Jarrow tanks.

Are you FROM round there, then?

A couple of nights ago i saw 60013 on the Murco's come bombing through Bridgend heading towards Margam shortly followed by 60074 coming in the opposite direction dead-in-tow behind a 66 and a small rake of MEA wagons

missed a shot of 60013 completely as is was running early and took me by suprise but i managed to get footage of 60074 being hauled away from Margam

see link B)
