Attempted suicide at a preserved railway, that isn't something I've heard of before. Is it a common issue on heritage lines as it is on the mainline?

No, it was where SVR runs parallel to Network Rail immediately outside Kiddy station, so all was stopped until it was clear.

Before this gets into a bit of tittle tattle. The disruption on the Thursday morning of the Diesel gala was on both NR and SVR. 2 people were seen on NR by West midlands railway staff and they immediately had a block put on all lines on NR. 1 person was apprehended by the police just outside the Carriage works. 1 individual was persuaded to leave the mainline by SVR staff at which point said person made a swift getaway from staff who eventually caught up with the person who was escorted off SVR land and back to Kidderminster station where they were arrested. It was all dealt with professionally by all SVR staff liasing with local police. One of the attending officers is also a volunteer in the C&W.

Night running is back for the autumn gala.  Be amazed at how invisible oncoming trains are, and how weak the green semaphore lights.  Bridgnorth is well worth a visit after dark just to see them all simmering away.

No idea on guest locos yet.

This should be compulsory for anyone thinking of illuminating a model railway!

I don't think the signal lights are even paraffin these says (the loco headlamps are, unless it's Taw Valley).  It's just that not much light from a yellowish source gets through a blue spectacle.  The red ones are a lot brighter.

The signal lamps are all electric. Most of the loco ones are LED in the main, although we still do have some paraffin ones

Is there any plan to add a second platform at Highley?  It always strikes me as a bit of a bottleneck, as trains can't pass without one of them unloading passengers and shunting onto the middle road.

No is the simple answer. The normal timetables are not written for crossings at Highley.  If a train has to unload and move to the middle road for another to pass its probably A a gala and B either a planned move or a signalman who has not read the timetable properly and about to have a big 'Please explain'

Trains cross at Bewdley and/or Hampton Loade.

The answer is normally into once detrained the now empty train is depending on the circumstances and direction of travel either driven or revered int the middle road. The fun for the signalman is working out what order to do it in.

Trains can pass at the platforms at Kidderminster, normally in the loop at Kidder (currently not possible as the double slip is not currently signed for any passenger moves) Bewdley, Arley, Hampton and Bridgnorth.

Its not something that is ever going to happen. If you were, which will never happen you would loose number 2 siding. The one thing about the platform at Highley is it was originally longer, However due to subsidence was cut back, you can just see the remains at the Hampton end of the station. Better when you look down from where you stop with the loco.

The big problem with the SVR is that it is single track. If one train is delayed then everything else is delayed. The answer is to make it double track. When built the railway land between Bewdley and Bridgnorth was designed to be wide enough to support a double track line. Even Knowlsands tunnel was built wide enough for double track. We can of course be 100% certain that the SVR will never be double track.

Surely part of the charm of Highley is that it is a single platform? It might be inconvenient in some busy timetables but at galas it introduces the need to shunt the empty stock of the local service across to the loop, and also has the most frequent service on the Valley as trains don’t cross.

To sit there between trains admiring the local countryside and infrastructure only for the peace to be broken by the tinging of the block bells heralding another arrival is to experience the railway at its best….

Yes that was my point too, there's nowhere at Highley for a second platform to go, without extensive (& detrimental) removal of track.

One detail that always makes me smile at Highley is the location of the cattle dock - right over a set of points!! Do that on a layout & the Knowitall Brigade would chortle and scoff.... not to mention that parking wagons there for loading would jam up the rest of the yard! 😁

As a reminder the next Kidderminster Railway museum photo fair is this coming Saturday in the old nursery which is behind the museum. Doors open at 10 am.

There are around 20 dealers covering a wide range of topics, plus of course the Kidderminster Railway Museum archive is available. Such an amazing range of subjects from locomotives, stations, rolling stock, in colour as well as black and white.

Hope to see some of you on Saturday.

How's this for an Autumn Diesel Gala - seven hydraulics in action all in the same places, something that may never be repeated...

A weekend of blue smoke, fast revs and everything sounding the same.

🙂

Not half Phil, and no mistake - I imagine that whoever is tasked with putting the timetable together will do their best to get as many combinations of locos as possible, I can’t wait, got the whole weekend off and book a ticket!
