3D Printed N Gauge Pendolino and On Track Plant

Hi David,

The IQA is looking really good now. A couple of other questions:

1) Are the covers separate parts, for ease of painting?

2) Are you planning to use etched parts for the end handrails? You've used some brass parts on your TRT and they worked well with the prototyped components I felt, adding a degree of finesse to an already superb model..

Cheers

Thanks Ben,

Yes will make the covers separate - I've sent it for is test print all in one for now, but dead easy to separate. I think brass always works best for the handrails, you can print freestanding rails but they have to be 1mm thick, which just isn't fine enough to do justice to the rest of the design as you say.

If the models take off in a big way, I will probably see if I can find an etched components firm who wants to make detailing add ons they can sell to complement the 3D prints.

Just cleaned up the flask wagon print, it sits nicely on the bogies and turns well. I was evidently far too cautious with the size of the tanks between the bogies and will vastly increase their size as there is plenty of room there.

This has come together quite well once it's been painted. I've just put on some spare decals from the other wagons for now as firstly I have no clear images of what the real ones say, and secondly they are in white text, which of course I cannot print at home...

I've added a few handrails and need to source a larger tank for beneath each bogie (will add this to the CAD design obviously), but now it just needs a DRS coach and the forthcoming DRS class 37 to run with it...

Hello David,

Wow!  Very good.  Fox transfers do a sheet for the FNA flask wagons (intended, I think, for Bernard Taylor's kit) but it also includes decals for the larger twin wagon I did; maybe some of the smaller markings would be good for your model.

Looking at the photograph here http://www.flickr.com/photos/60541960@N07/5526627887 the main lettering appears to be standard international style with the wagon number following the continental designations.  It occurs to me that unless someone actually knows the numbers of these wagons off the top of their head then you could get away with any such lettering - indeed, the kit for the "original" style Tiphook KPA wagon (later the autoballaster) has very similar markings, as does the upcoming Rover cube wagon.

However, looking at the photo linked to in this post, and comparing it to your photos in post 609, I did wonder whether the covers as currently drawn are slightly underscale?  It is clear that these wagons really "fill" the loading gauge, whereas next to the Farish nuclear flask (which doesn't) the model looks roughly the same height.  Just a thought while you are at the development stage!

cheers

Ben A.

Hi Ben, thanks for the Fox Transfers pointer, I will definitely get that sheet, it will be close enough I think.

As for the size, this photo is a good one to judge as its fairly easy to compare to the 37 - http://www.flickr.com/photos/locohunter/5543031788/in/set-72157626994954038

Looking at mine, you are probably right, it needs to be about 2mm taller, so I will scale it up.

I've beefed up the flask covers by 2mm so they are now in line with the top of the loco body, and shifted the side grilles to the correct position, and added the larger tanks on the bogie chassis. Unfortunately, I have run out of funds to print this, so will need to wait a couple of weeks before ordering. Hopefully I can also then afford to order the Fox decals at the same time (this is the downside of not working!), as I am hoping to get at least a few orders for my designs after the N Gauge Show, which will pay for this.

Hello David,

Superb work on the IQA, that is a very impressive wagon let alone the design work you have put into it.

I spotted this earlier and thought it may be a good little project for you to do next,

http://www.imeche.org/news/engineering/'factory-on-wheels'-train-will-cut-costs

At 23 vehicles long (2 days work maybe?)

I've even found some scale plans for you,

Only kidding,

Keep up the great work.

Hello David,

What I have read supports your comment of the HOPS splitting up into smaller sections, there are some graphic on Windhoff's website of similar system (I think supplied to the swiss operator SBB CFF FFS).

http://www.windhoff.de/e/index_ft.htm

and

http://www.windhoff.de/e/index_ft.htm

Which it may be partially based on, they might be able to provide you with more info or even Network Rail.

I don't know if you spotted this, but there are a few photos of parts under construction/ testing here

Ooh actually I've been thinking of making that when there's more info out there - it's 23 vehicles but seems to be repeating groups that split off and work in chunks up each line. It's an MPV front with wagons in between,

Hmm, if only those blueprints were clearer!

David

As you'll know David, at least the power cars are done already.

David,

Where are you getting your ATM bogies from? As all of the places I have tried seem to have sold out.

Also it seems like I ask this for each of your models but which ones is it for your IQA? got to be prepared for when you to make them available, so that they can hopefully be running in time for one of our outings in either September or October.
