At 20.50 into this marvellous footage of the S&C, we see the down Waverley approaching Blea Moor tunnel, or is it the up.  I forget.  Immerse yourselves in this anyway, it's sixties hard-worked Peak bliss....

...and at 45.00 1S64 is seen in the Citadel.

I haven't seen the home page for this shot I just found, but this looks suspiciously like a diverted West Coast service 1S05 in the transition era, well, when else could it be!

EDIT: It's on Project Hawick of this parish. D1999 in August '67.  Lovely.  Maybe it is 2S52 with a lazy headcode.

Given that the formation starts with a Mk.1 BCK followed by what looks like a couple of all-firsts, I go for the diverted working !

I think this picture is more likely post banking after having assisted from a dead stop at the station. At least in those days a banker did not have today scandal fueled negative connotation.

Martin Wynne has posted a link to a fantastic BBC piece from 1972, in this thread:

Incredible footage from around the 20 minute mark, including Longtown SB, and Hawick still functioning as a parcels distribution hub.  Sad but compelling.

In January 1966, I heard that the daily 14MU, RAF Carlisle workers train from Parkhouse Halt to Citadel station was to be withdrawn. I had intended to photo the evening train, which left Parkhouse Halt around 5pm, on most evenings. However, in January and early February it was too dark to take photos, so I only managed to start taking them in late February. My plans were further disrupted by a death in the family at the end of Feb 1966.

I did manage to take a few shots before the train ceased, and here is a photo of Ivatt 2-6-0 No. 43000 crossing the Waverly Bridge over the river Eden and passing the entrance to the closed Canal shed in February 1966.

I got a copy of this about 10-15 years ago, though rather a weary copy, and put the Carlisle-Edinburgh section up on my 37175 Youtube account.

Must say that when the BBC repeated the episode and broadcast a documentary on Iain Nairn (last year was it?) I raised a dram to the chap (he'd have liked that) as he is one of my all time absolute idols, and he's one that I'll never have the chance of meeting in person.

1S05 looks to have been the down "Royal Highlander", 20:20 Euston - Inverness sleeper, but if so it is running very late as it should have left Carlisle at about 1:30am.

I'm afraid that the only link I can give you for a completely new (to me) Bill Anderson shot on the WR is to suggest you go into WH Smith and have a look in the current edition of Steam Railway magazine. There's a very nice shot of Salmon Trout approaching Fountainhall station on a Carlisle New Yard to Millerhill freight in 1965. The view is taken from the platform end with the train thoughtfully framed between signals (as one might expect from WJV).
