Kernow Models D6xx Update

I considered another and ordered it. I hope they’re as good as the Bulleids.

Just ordered a second as well, as I had £135 credit from the recently cancelled DJ Models Class 74 project and didn't want to incur Kernow with costs of refunding to my cc. For a net cost of £21.60 it seemed so reasonable!!!

As BackRat stated above, Chris allowed us to run the D6xx on the modular layout at Staplegrove last Sunday and it did indeed run smoothly up and around for several trips without any issues whatsoever. We ran the first sample of the Bulleid last year and that too ran beautifully. So the wait may have been long but I reckon it will be worth it.

I do remember going up to London for a uni interview from Taunton and the train was pulled by a D6xx. If only the interview had been as smooth as the trip!

Enjoy

Godfrey

Really good to see these are another step closer.

When they are done perhaps Chris can be persuaded to make start on 'Kerosene Castle'.  At least it's at Didcot waiting to be scanned...

Could we pursue him to his lair and sit on his chest until he agrees? Could we continue to sit on him until he agrees to do the Class 80 as well?

I do know of several concerns in the model railway business who looked at the Kerosene Castle some years back while at Didcot scanning other things.  All three of them decided that it would be a project too far - at that time.

A sure way to fix that would be for me to build my old MTK kit.

“…at that time.” The Bulleid diesels seem to be selling very quickly. I’m glad about that for Kernow’s sake but also because it might lead to a rethink about the gas turbines. I should imagine that Kerosene Castle would be the easiest to tackle. Let’s hope times have changed!

The big advantage of the 'Kerosene Castlle' is that it is there to scan should someone be so inclined (and ready to amend out the rust patches etc plus it spent more time officially in traffic than its half-brother so in theory might be more commercially attractive.  But for anyone the inevitable question must be 'will it sell?' as it really is far more specialised than most things which have appeared thus far as r-t-r models in OO.

Heljan seemed to do ok out of Falcon, Kestrel and Lion which were one off prototypes so this one might succeed as there is/was? a market for these unusual locos. The collector in me says I would buy it and I would certainly be interested in GT3. Perhaps though things have moved on economically.

Times and costs have moved on since Heljan released Falcon etc.

Not sure what I paid for D1200 now but probably in the region of £100.  If a one-off loco was produced today it might well be more like £200.  That would surely affect the marketability of anything with fairly limited geographical / timespan appeal even if a good many might, as I suspect is the  case with those Heljan models, be bought as collector's pieces and as curiosities rather than everyday running models.

Conjecturally if Kernow MRC had started work on the D6xx today would they be offered at £169?  I think not.  Probably nearer the £200 mark again.

I'd pay £200 each for 18000 and 18100.

I hope that 10100 doesn't appear RTR though - Mike Edge is relying on me to buy (and stop nagging) as soon as his kit appears !!

John Isherwood.

I suppose £200 is something of a psychological barrier as £100 once was. After hesitation, I think I would pay it for each of those three and for a Class 80 and GT3*. After all, £200 or thereabouts is what Hornby wants for a Duchess and less than what is wanted for an HST power car. Hornby, though, needs cash desperately. It would be most agreeable if an enterprising commissioner could bring them out for less.

*Not all at once, of course!

Excellent point ...............

I paid £89.50 on 08/01/09 - now there's OCD for you :O

I would have paid £200 each for E1000 / E2001, if it didn't need OHLE - but it does; and GT3, if I hadn't already built one.

I think 18000 or 18100 would have a higher take up than might be supposed. They go way back to the late '40s and if memory serves me correctly were ordered by Mr Hawkesworth. Withdrawal was 1960ish. Fair scope there for folks to find an excuse for one.

£200? I'd have one at that. As has been mentioned a Duchess is knocking that and a pair of HST powers cars £240.

Anyway, D601 please...

Thank you for those pictures and congratulations on your GT3. I haven’t got a GT3. I haven’t got OHLE either but don’t care. Just look at that monster! Perhaps some day, stuff like this might persuade me to get out my knitting needles if Hornby and Bachmann’s new electrics haven’t done it already.

But don't forget Falcon and Lion were far less specialised and geographically restricted than the Western gas turbines or GT3 although Kestrel probably was seen not much more widely than the gas turbines.  The other thing about Falcon and Lion in particular is that they drop straight into the popular transition era which also broadens the market beyond just those who collect.  Even I bought Lion - because i remember it and liked it when it was running.  I remember 18000 as well but its impact on me wasn't as great as Lion's to be honest although i would probably buy one.

I've had to email Kernow, to find out what I pre-ordered way way back (when I bought things that won't fit my modelled location).

I've changed home address, email and card number since then, so hopefully we'll be able to find one shared bit of data whereby we can track the order!!!

What excellent service - Kevin at KMRC has already emailed me and I'm currently sorting my pre-orders out!  Marvellous!!!!

Always a helpful process with them I have found - and on one occasion I checked with them during a quiet moment on their stand at a show and was duly given the answer within a minute or so, says a lot for their IT as well as their helpfulness.
