Hi all,

Dent had its first official RMWeb member' visit when Ray (Tender) and his good lady Polly (Southern) called in after their stint at the Wallasey show on Saturday. I'm sure they enjoyed the visit, I mean tea and biscuits followed by playing trains - what more can one want!

A big shed in the garden.

You would have had some fudge from the nice Sweetie guy in the Exhibition foyer had Ray not eaten half of it before we left.  I knew I should have hidden it. :mosking:

Seriously, it was great of you to ask us back though we nearly didn't make it as the Sat Nav is so old, the road we were driving on wasn't there and we were continually told to do a U-Turn until we fathomed out the one-way system in the direction we needed to go!

Dent is most impressive, capturing the Settle & Carlisle really well.  It brought back memories of our stay at Kirkby Stephen Station and a steam trip on the S&C.

We picked up a few tips. We particularly liked how you store your locos in storage trays wrapped in thin foam underlay to make removal easy.

Many thanks, Mike.

The storage idea sounds interesting - any chance of a picture?

Hi guys,

Thanks Ray & Polly, it was nice of you to go to the trouble of circumventing (good word eh!) the dodgy sat-nav, I hate the things give me a map anytime.

I got one for Laura when she passed her test then got lost once! Our first foray with the sat-nav was to Dundee and Laura filled in the info and we set off with her driving, about a mile down the road I notice the ETA was about 6 hrs and asked what she put in, she said Dundee. On checking it the thing was sending us up to Carlisle then west to Troon before going east toward Dundee, I said why have you put Troon in, she said 'where's Troon?' Funny really but had I not known better she would have followed it all the way!

Will put a couple of pic's of the loco lift in tonight when I get some time, back to work for now.

Hi all,

In answer to SP1's request here are a few photos of my loco storage system...

post-5296-0-67711600-1415308887.jpg

All loco's are stored in plastic drawer sets with the loco number visible through the opaque drawer

post-5296-0-23409200-1415308953.jpg

The drawers are all lined with a foam underlay from a laminate floor supplier

post-5296-0-26642500-1415308897.jpg

Each loco is stored in a divided tray

post-5296-0-46545600-1415308911.jpg

The loco's are contained in a thinner laminate floor foam underlay and this is used to lift them in and out of the tray

post-5296-0-03190500-1415308925.jpg

This is the basic shape of the lift out foam which allows the foam to enter under the drawer unit and close down on the loco to keep it secure.

post-5296-0-16465700-1415308940.jpg

Simply enter the rear under the edge and drop into place, closing the drawer presses the excess foam down.

Simples!

Hope you find it useful.

That looks great! And what a brilliant idea to use the extra, thinner piece of foam.

A few midweek photos...

The 'Up' 'Thames-Clyde Express' enters Dent behind Class 5 No. 44999 piloting Jubilee No. 45562 'Alberta'

The express rattles through the station

post-5296-0-82233300-1415309864.jpg

In the opposite direction Royal Scot 4-6-0 is heading the 'Down' 'Thames-Clyde Express' without assistance.

post-5296-0-89344400-1415309872.jpg

Both loco's are crossing in the station area

post-5296-0-18623300-1415309880.jpg

I hope there is no soup dished up in Restaurant car!

The headboard on the Scot is an etched item from '247 Developments' and the carriage boards are from 'Sankey Scenics'. I now need them to make me a 'Down' version stating 'Glasgow - St. Pancras' as I have memories of the boards being reversible.

That's it for now, over the weekend the Scot and its train will look somewhat different!

Lovely pics as ever Mike. Made me want to rush back to Hurlford to see the 'Scot' rattle down the gradient past the shed and on towards Kilmarnock. You've once again brought some wonderful memories to the fore, thank you.

Kind regards,

Jock.

Hi all,

Spent a bit of time doing a bit of stock detailing which as Jason said a while ago 'needed some attention'. So here we are the first set train is now 'attended to'! The loco is curently carrying the 'TCE' headboard but the stock will form the 'Waverley' once the carriage boards are fitted.

post-5296-0-96330900-1415474937.jpg

This view shows the original condition of the Scot and its train.

post-5296-0-23677700-1415474594.jpg

Here the Scot bursts out of Widdale Tunnel and over the viaduct

I have fitted all the accessories detailing pack plus crew and REAL coal in the tender.

Last photo used a flash, this is without

I think it stands up to close scrutiny

The difference a few hours makes!

post-5296-0-35344100-1415474626.jpg

Managed to dull down all the bright metalwork, much better.

post-5296-0-42566700-1415474634.jpg

The train has also received attention with each coach having a different level of treatment

post-5296-0-77975300-1415474642.jpg

Looks much more realistic in the landscape, would look better with the signal finished!

post-5296-0-55100700-1415474650.jpg

Can just make out the crew working terribly hard!

post-5296-0-21289200-1415474658.jpg

I did do the other side!

post-5296-0-96330900-1415474937.jpg

I really don't like flash results!

No plans as yet for tomorrow but plenty on the cards, need some more materials to continue the station building so that's on hold, we'll have to wait and see!

Hi all,

Had a busy few days on several projects...

Whilst awaiting some materials for the guttering on the station building I have started the weathering process.

This shows a close up, I have used Modelmates 'dirty brown'

Dye liberally applied

post-5296-0-67720800-1416163012.jpg

I gently rub off the excess and let it dry

Next is a wash of sooty black paint

End result.

Guttering and downpipes next followed by the roof slating.

Biggest job of the weekend was to extend the 'Fells' on both sides of the scenic section in order to give an impression of the tunnels actually being required. It was more by luck than by design that the tunnel mouths are positioned where they are which gives the illusion more credence.

post-5296-0-71029300-1416163940.jpg

At the north end a lightweight frame sits on a few pins an a wall bracket and will be easily removed if required.

post-5296-0-42615300-1416163947.jpg

The south end frame is similarly installed

post-5296-0-51521300-1416163953.jpg

A few stacks of 'Kingspan' style foam are cut and laid on top

post-5296-0-58715700-1416163960.jpg

Arrangement is slightly different at this end

post-5296-0-31673100-1416163967.jpg

Once all the foam was cut and formed into a 'fellside' the whole assembly was taken outside

post-5296-0-25680300-1416163973.jpg

This is the north end with a double layer of Mod-Roc (I forgot to take a picture of the foam forming)

post-5296-0-64906800-1416163979.jpg

This is the rear of the south end fellside showing the radius which the backscene will 'eventually' curve around to avoid an unsightly joint which I have to admit I have had on every layout made to date!

Well, doing this lot knac*ered me so not a chance of lifting these into place until at least tomorrow. There will be a couple of small alterations to the scenic boards to align these due to the spiral clearances.

Finish off with a couple of trains eh!

8F 48154 rumbles out of Widdale tunnel and into daylight hauling a train of empty cattle wagons bound for Stranraer

post-5296-0-13597000-1416164829.jpg

This train will be getting a makeover soon

A pair of English Electric Type 1's find it easy going hauling a loaded coal train south now they have passed the summit at Ais Gill.

More next week guys. Hope you like.

At least we do see some pictures of trains on this set of baseboards, not like a grass less layout I can think of!

Give Andy a chance Ray, he still getting over the shock of the Potting Shed being turned into a burger and sausage parlour.  Good job the Bitton Council declined the use as inapropriate for the area. :jester:

WOT No more pics, what is this thread coming to, hahhahhaha

I'll be back tomorrow night.

Andy, Pictures! You'll be sick of looking at grass in a week or two's time when I get those two Fell' sides covered. I was thinking of incorporating Wild Boar Fell at one end and Penyghent at the other but the ceiling was too low!

Great pics and work there mike

After working a lot of hours at work ive managed to do a bit more on my own part of the settle to carlisle route, ais gill summit.

Road bridge finished, cattle creep bridge done, modified a ratio lineside hut that resembles the one that burnt down, started ballasting tonight.

Still plenty to do as always!

I,ll have to update my thread on it again.

Keep those photos coming mate,it spurs me on with my own layout!

Cheers

Ben
