Hi Mike, I put my name down for two of the Hornby mag's Brake tender's when they were announced but now I guess I wont be needing any, that was for when I intended to model the line through Wydale up to Buxton.

Hi Andy,

Its just typical sod's law for me, I've waited 40 odd years for some manufacturer to bring these out and after that long I gave up and bought two then..............well you know the rest Hahahaha

Hi all,

As promised here are the big changes! You should be able to easily see a difference in the layout but for 10 points can you see what the other big change is?

Ex LMS 2P 4-4-0 No, 40604 departs Dent and heads for the depths of Rise Hill tunnel with the Garsdale stopper.

So, we now have a cutting! In its infancy to be fair but further work will enhance the scene in due course.

The long view of the TCE shows the distant fell quite well

Looking north again the new fell has enhanced the view

Part 2...

Class 9F 92233 trundles out of Rise Hill tunnel with a fitted van train for Stourton, Leeds (with flash)

Same without flash

post-5296-0-05988700-1416866374.jpg

This view has really been transformed with the addition of the fell and the cutting sides blending in

post-5296-0-32913700-1416866383.jpg

Trundling along at about 45mph and not a care in the world!

About to plunge into Widdale tunnel.

Any ideas what else has changed yet?

Agh yes its the White Splodge on the bridge that you cant see because some idiots put a Signal in the way, Very good mate, nice job.

No points Andy, its not the white splodge! - Cheeky, that is a scale replica of the non-square white background applied to the Coal Road bridge I'll have you know!

Morning Mike.

Love the 2P, a much travelled loco as it was at Corkerhill in 1948, but ended its days at Keith in Moray (Banffshire before the not much loved changes! I like the weathering but my clearest memories of the 2P are the shed pets at Hurlford and Ayr which often looked like they'd just left Derby!

Lovely and inspirational once again, thanks mate,

Kind regards,

Jock.

Hi guys,

New toilet seat! Come on Andy this is Dent - its lost in a timewarp! So its no again hahaha

And its not a new slip and ballasting however I will admit to a foot or so of ballasting adjacent to Rise Hill Tunnel now the cutting is in place, the slip was done a couple of months ago at least.

I'll give you all a clue: The big change is not actually on the layout but it SHOULD have made a rather obvious difference but OBVIOUSLY NOT! Gutted of Wirrral! hahaha

Been out to sort a few new train consists out so there will be a few new trains to photo - soon!

ANDY'S GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :locomotive:  :locomotive:  :declare:  :declare: 10 POINTS TO YOU SIR BODGIT!!!!!!!!!!

Pictures of inspiration are now consigned to a stack of A3 on a shelf! One contributor to Dent (Sam - Sir Douglas) voiced this change several weeks ago and a small debate followed on the pro's and con's of having a backscene at all! At the time I was doing the Bothy and a few other bits and needed them for quick and sizeable reference however the placement of the new Fells partially obscured some images so it was time for the whole lot to go and he, Jason, Alan and a few other were indeed right and it now looks so much cleaner.

I have amongst my stock of 'May need some day' items two Gaugemaster photographic backscenes which as they are are wholly inappropriate for Dent as one at least features some terraced houses! However I may just offer them up to see what the results are.

So all you need to do now is to paint the wall blue for the sky and job done... Oh no, wait a minute - the sky is NEVER completely blue over Dent, always a few scudding clouds about even at the best of times :jester: .

Cheers Mike, I use White faced Hardboard, I then just give it a light coating of Car Paint from a well known Motor Shop beginning with H,its Ford Blue and have a White Primer to hand for some fluffy bits, see example of the one I did at our Club below.

Hi guys,

Inspirational stuff there! I'm torn between a plain sky background as you both suggest or a photo style print which will give some depth of field as I don't think my own Fells should be the summit so to speak. My mate John is round tonight for what he thinks will be a play! Haha I have a cunning plan!

Mike,

I'm not sure if this post will help your decision or not... but I'll say it anyway...

I think that the best pictures that you do are from track level (or below) which I think would benefit from a plain sky background as in most of them the near fells that you've modelled would hide the further, higher, fells from those angles.

However, you also get some excellent shots from the higher viewing angles which, in the prototype world, would enable you to see the further fells (from your helicopter). But putting those in is more difficult as unless you're very lucky there will be angles from which the perspective, even of distant hillsides, doesn't quite work on the flat backboard.

So in balance I'd suggest the plain sky, especially as the quality of your modelling draws the eye so much that introducing anything on the flat background that could distract from it by being just a little out of perspective would, I feel, be a shame.

Kind regards, Neil

Hi all,

Little midweek update. as you know I have removed the pictures from the wall and I am now in deliberation mode as to whether to have a simple painted sky or a 'Fell' scene photographic background. Have a look at the background below which is in no way correct for Dent its only for a trial.

Just Sky Mike, look at the third pic up, (the J39) and look at then plain wall, now imagine that a plain blue, maybe not as bright as the Blue I've used, although you can use that with a light spray of White Primer over it to take the Blue out of it and leave it a bit Grayer.

Thanks for some really inspiring pics again mate, cheers.

Wow! What a great day's gricing that was - loving the lengthy 9F train (Carlisle - Washwood Heath I presume?)

The backscene doesn't really 'work' for me either. Unfortunately, even though we know it isn't anything like one you might use, the actual images on it are far too distracting to get any sort of feel for it. Not only the houses but the completely flat line of the field in the foreground - that, in particular completely diminishes the lovely open fell effect you already have.

Even though I'm no artist, my thought is that, rather than a blue-dominated background, you might want to go for a cloudy-grey 'brooding' sky, as if the next rain shower is not far away!

Anybody any good at photoshopping? Why not try superimposing the sky from my photo above onto the picture with the Brush 4 heading south and see how that looks?

OK. So I'm no Photoshop artist, and I only have Windows Paint available while here at work. But here's the result of that.

post-13426-0-79396900-1417090636.jpg

The lighter patches of sky sort of look a little like mist about to flow over the ridge of the fells! Though as I said earlier, it would be even better on one of the shots from lower down nearer to the rails as you'd then not normally expect to see the higher fells beyond. Though by having the sky, as you suggest, looking like the next down-pouring is about to occur means that you may not be able to see those higher fells anyway. You know the saying... if you can see the fells it's about to rain, if you can't then it already is.

Kind regards, Neil
